ABSTRACT

Preparation of hydrophobic coatings is still a challenge for researchers in various fields of science. One of the easiest ways consists of the use of special modifiers. However, usually such modifiers are poorly compatible with organic polymeric matrixes, which leads to segregation of modifiers and deterioration of coating properties. In this work, we have synthesized a number of organosilicon copolymers and studied their compatibility with epoxy matrix and hydrophobic efficiency. It was shown that the increase of phenyl-containing units leads to increase of compatibility but decreases hydrophobic efficiency. Addition of small amounts of such modifiers into commercial epoxy paint material can lead to an increase of contact angle of the final coating from 63 to 87° without deterioration of other physico-mechanical properties. These results open new perspectives in preparation of organosilicon hydrophobic modifiers with directed properties for fields of application such as paints and coating materials.

ABSTRACT

Phase equilibria, interdiffusion and structure in the initial uncured mixtures of epoxy oligomer-polysulfone-alkyl glycidyl ether were studied. Binodal curves were constructed on isothermal sections of the ternary phase diagram. Thermodynamic mixing parameters were calculated and spinodal curves were plotted. The interdiffusion coefficients of components, establishing the technological modes of mixing the components, were determined. To validate the phase diagram, the phase structure of mixtures, the composition of which at a temperature of 40 °C corresponds to heterogeneous and homogeneous regions, was studied.

ABSTRACT

The method of optical wedge revealed that the optimum temperature for compatibility of hexakis(4-acetamidophenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene (ACP) and DER-331 epoxy resin is in the range of 220-260 °C. The interdiffusion time of components at these temperatures is about 30 min. The TGA and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) methods revealed the curing temperature of 280 °Ð¡ for this composition. IR spectroscopy confirmed that the reaction between the resin and ACP is completed within 10 min. According to the DSC data, a glass transition temperature of 130 °Ð¡ was estimated for the cured resin. Combustion test UL-94 demonstrated that the obtained material can be assigned to the fireproof category of V-0. Burning droplets were not formed during the burning. The coke formed during the combustion of samples possessed a dense and porous structure. The shape of pores is closed, while their size is in the range of 0.2-200 µm.
