ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Professional practice attributes of nurses help to promote nursing as a profession and advance nursing education. Nursing professionals need to demonstrate a high level of professional commitment to their practices and must be professionally competent to perform their roles. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Descriptive survey was conducted at the nursing educational institutes affiliated with the Indian Nursing Council and situated in the selected Northern Indian states. The sample included 343 nurse educators who were selected using simple random sampling. The self-reported method was adopted to collect data where three questionnaires including socio-demographic information, organizational characteristics of current place of work, and professional practice attributes assessment criteria were used. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. RESULTS: Overall, the study's participants scored poorly on professional practice attributes (Mean, SD: 1.98, 2.03), which were linked to their personal (age and gender), professional (educational background, professional qualification, current designation), and organizational (duration of organization's establishment, courses provided, college management) characteristics. CONCLUSION: The findings highlighted the need for nurse educators to be more competent and dedicated in their respective fields. The study also suggests that in order to raise the standard of nursing education, nursing regulatory bodies like nursing councils, universities, and governments must take the necessary steps to foster the professional development of nurse educators.

ABSTRACT

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are promising carbonaceous nanomaterials fortuitously discovered in 2004. CQDs are the rising stars in the nanotechnology ensemble because of their unique properties and widespread applications in sensing, imaging, medicine, catalysis, and optoelectronics. CQDs are notable for their excellent solubility and effective luminescence and, as a result, they are also known as carbon nanolights. Many strategies are used for the efficient and economical preparation of CQDs; however, CQDs prepared from waste or green sustainable methods have greater requirements due to their safety and ease of synthesis. Sustainable chemical strategies for CQDs have been developed, emphasizing green synthetic methodologies based on 'top-down' and 'bottom-up' approaches. This review summarizes many such studies relevant to the development of sustainable methods for photoluminescent CQDs. Furthermore, we have emphasized recent advances in CQDs' photoluminescence applications in chemical and biological fields. Finally, a brief overview of synthetic processes using the green source and their associated applications are tabulated, providing a clear understanding of the new optoelectronic materials.

ABSTRACT

The current study pertains to the synthesis of an EDTA-functionalized ß-cyclodextrin-chitosan (ß-CD-CS-EDTA) composite via a two-step process for the adsorptive removal of toxic heavy metallic ions (i.e., Pb(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II)) and antibiotic micropollutant, i.e., ciprofloxacin (CIP), from water. Different batch adsorption experiments such as pH, reaction time and initial pollutant concentration effects were carried out to identify the adsorption condition to attain the maximum removal efficiency. Kinetics results fit well with the pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetics model for both inorganic and organic pollutants. However, adsorption of heavy metal ions to the adsorbent was faster than that of CIP. Isotherms results showed excellent monolayer adsorption capacities of 330.90, 161, and 118.90 mg g-1 for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II), respectively, with a heterogeneous adsorption capacity of 25.40 mg g-1 for CIP. The adsorption mechanism was investigated using energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), elemental mapping, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques. More significantly, the synthesized adsorbent gave good removal efficiencies when it was applied to simultaneously adsorb metal ions and CIP from real wastewater. Furthermore, excellent reusability could be obtained, making it a viable alternative to remove the inorganic and organic micropollutants for wastewater treatment.

ABSTRACT

The oncogenic potential of Apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide-like 3G (APOBEC3G) was recently appreciated by the finding that revealed its ability to downregulate Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) gene translation through its affinity for 3'UTR of KLF4 mRNA. Keeping in view the fact that KLF4 is known to repress apoptosis antagonizing transcription factor (AATF) gene expression, the present study employed stem cells as archetype model to explore the effect of APOBEC3G over-expression upon AATF gene expression within these cells as well as on the genes involved in oncogenic transformation. Such a study revealed that APOBEC3G had the ability to bind AATF mRNA within its third exon to facilitate the generation of truncated 23 kDa AATF translation product which, in turn, had the inherent capacity to be the crucial mediator of APOBEC3G induced oncogenic transformation within such cells.

ABSTRACT

Since apoptosis presents a natural defense in cancer development, the anti-apoptotic factor AATF/Che-1 has emerged as a crucial 'Epigenomic-Switch'. We have tried to understand the double-edged nature of AATF, showing for the first time the conspicuous existence of an aberrant AATF/Che-1 transcriptome encoding for 23 kDa mutant AATF protein, which evolves its unique interactome within human cancer cells derived from different tissue origins. This mutant AATF along with its interactome consisting of SP1, DNMT3B and Par-4 ensures cancer cell DNA methylation required for down-regulation of tumor suppressor genes. Hence, the proposed mutant AATF interactome-based pathway can have the inherent ability to ensure human cells become and remain cancerous.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of the following study is to characterize the cytological features of pilomatricomas (PMXs) on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and correlate with the histopathological features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: FNA, histopathological and clinical diagnosis of 12 cases of PMXs were analyzed. Clinical, aspiration findings and histopathological features were correlated with histopathological diagnosis which was taken as the gold standard. A written consent was taken from patients or parents as appropriate. Morphological features of both aspiration as well as histopathological features were graded. The study was duly approved by the Hospital Scientific Review Committee. RESULTS: Out of the 7600 cases studied retrospectively over a period of 4 years, only 12 cases were diagnosed as PMXs. These tumors were mainly located in the head and neck region and mostly affected young females (median age 9.5 years). The mean size of these lesions was 0.9 cm. Out of the 12 histopathologically proven cases of PMX, the correct clinical diagnosis was given in only one case while cytopathological diagnosis was achieved in four cases. CONCLUSION: PMX is a rare tumor, which is mostly found in the pediatric age group. The clinical features should be keenly observed. Keeping in mind the diagnostic pitfalls a cytopathologist may encounter, histopathology should be regarded as the gold standard for diagnosis.
