ABSTRACT

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is a very flexible method that can create topographical images from a range of materials and image surfaces. Significantly, AFM has emerged as an invaluable tool for dissecting the morphology and biochemical aspects of body cells and tissues. The high-resolution imaging capabilities of AFM enable researchers to discern alterations in cell morphology and understand the underlying mechanisms of diseases. It contributes to understanding disease etiology and progression. In the context of this review, our focus will be directed towards elucidating the pivotal role of AFM in analysis of blood related disorders. Through detailed comparisons with normal cells, we delve into the alterations in size, shape, and surface characteristics induced by conditions such as cancer, diabetes, anaemia, and infections caused by pathogens. In essence, various work described in this article highlights to bridge the gap between traditional microscopy and in-depth analysis of blood-related pathologies, which in turn offers valuable perspectives for both research and clinical applications in the field.

ABSTRACT

Objective This study aimed to examine the current understanding and perspectives about the use of antibiotics among the general public living in the city of Muzaffarpur, Bihar, and the surrounding areas. Methodology A cross-sectional study was carried out from March 2023 to August 2023 in Muzaffarpur. Data was obtained through interviews based on a standardized questionnaire derived from a prior study. The findings were summarized using descriptive statistics, frequencies, and percentages, and then presented in tabular form. Results This study recruited 384 participants in total; the majority of them (n=200, 52.1%) were females, while the remaining 184 (47.9%) participants were males. Our findings revealed that 368 (96%) participants agreed on the necessity of prescribing distinct antibiotics for the treatment of various ailments. Nevertheless, the participants held divergent perspectives regarding the efficacy of antibiotics in treating coughs and colds, as well as their effectiveness against viruses and bacteria. Overall, 354 (92.1%) participants agreed with the importance of finishing the prescribed antibiotic regimen, and 335 (87.2%) agreed that people should refrain from retaining drugs for future use. Of note, 90% of the participants (n=346) stated that they did not think it was advisable to get antibiotics from friends and family without first consulting a doctor. Conclusion The current study documented a prevalent utilization of antibiotics among the study participants, with a significant proportion of these medications being obtained without a prescription. The respondents demonstrated a general lack of understanding, particularly concerning the significance of antibiotics in treating mild viral illnesses.

ABSTRACT

South American tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is native to South America, but is a major invasive and quarantine pest species in Europe, Africa, and Asia. It causes extensive damage of up to 100% yield loss in tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) in open and greenhouse conditions. Since its first invasion in Spain in 2006, it has spread rapidly into many countries in the Mediterranean and Western Europe and further invaded Africa and Asia. In Asia, it was first recorded in August 2009 in Turkey and spread to most South and East Asian countries. In this study, we reviewed existing work on the biology and distribution of T. absoluta in Asia, as well as the damage it causes. This review will help to develop efficient management tactics as well as establish quarantine and phytosanitary precautions in uninvaded countries.

ABSTRACT

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), a significant commercial crop of the Indian subcontinent is widely used as a condiment, natural dye, and as a cure for different ailments. Various bioactive compounds such as turmerones and curcuminoids have been isolated from C. longa that have shown remarkable medicinal activity against various ailments. However, reduced soil fertility, climatic variations, rapid urbanization, and enhanced food demand, pose a multifaceted challenge to the current agricultural practices of C. longa. Plant growth-promoting microbes play a vital role in plant growth and development by regulating primary and secondary metabolite production. Rhizospheric associations are complex species-specific interconnections of different microbiota with a plant that sustain soil health and promote plant growth through nutrient acquisition, nitrogen fixation, phosphate availability, phytohormone production, and antimicrobial activities. An elaborative study of microbiota associated with the roots of C. longa is essential for rhizospheric engineering as there is a huge potential to develop novel products based on microbial consortium formulations and elicitors to improve plant health, stress tolerance, and the production of secondary metabolites such as curcumin. Primarily, the purpose of this review is to implicate the rhizospheric microbial flora as probiotics influencing overall C. longa health, development, and survival for an increase in biomass, enhanced yield of secondary metabolites, and sustainable crop production.

ABSTRACT

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is an important agricultural pest species native to the Western Hemisphere and has recently invaded to Africa and Asia. Owing to the development of pesticide resistance and environmental contamination, ecofriendly pesticides are desirable for FAW control. Azadirachtin is a plant-derived natural pesticide with low toxicity to humans and the natural environment. Azadirachtin is primarily applied by foliar spraying; however, this approach lowers the efficacy of controlling target insects owing to photodegradation and might give a harmful effect on nontarget beneficial insects. Thus, we investigated whether applying azadirachtin to soil improves FAW control and its toxicity to corn plants. Soil drainage of azadirachtin exhibited no phytotoxic effects on corn plants but significantly reduced the larval body weight and delayed the developmental period of each larval instar of FAW. Applying 10, 15, and 20 ppm azadirachtin to soil inhibited larval growth by 68%, 76%, and 91%, respectively. Furthermore, the survival rate of FAW gradually decreased when larvae were fed azadirachtin-treated corn leaves. Collectively, this is the first study suggesting the systemic efficacy of azadirachtin by soil drenching against FAW.

ABSTRACT

Outbreaks of Lymantria dispar asiatica (the Asian spongy moth; Lepidoptera: Erebidae) occur sporadically, causing widespread damage to forest and fruit trees. Owing to the development of pesticide resistance and environmental contamination, biopesticides, including L. dispar multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (LdMNPV) and Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk), can significantly contribute to controlling overall larval stage of this species. Although both pathogens are highly effective at the larval stage, their effects on different instar stages have not been investigated. In this study, we analyzed the mortality and lethality in different L. dispar asiatica instars exposed to single or combined pathogen treatments. Treatments with low or medium LdMNPV concentrations induced lower mortality and had higher LT50 values at the 4th and 5th instars compared with other instars, whereas high LdMNPV treatments induced high mortality in all instars, with higher LT50 values at later instars. Treatment with Btk induced a rapid 100% mortality in all instars, with higher LT50 values for the later instars. The combination of LdMNPV and Btk delayed the killing time compared with the effects of single treatments, with the effect being more pronounced in the 1st and 5th instar stage than at other stages at low Btk concentrations. Our findings indicate that the pathogenic effects of LdMNPV and Btk on L. dispar asiatica differ according to larval stage, thereby providing novel insights into enhancing the biological control efficacy of these agents against L. dispar asiatica in the field.

ABSTRACT

Bemisia tabaci is a species complex consisting of various genetically different cryptic species worldwide. To understand the genetic characteristics and geographic distribution of cryptic species of B. tabaci in Asia, we conducted an extensive collection of B. tabaci samples in ten Asian countries (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam) from 2013 to 2020 and determined 56 different partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) DNA. In addition, information on 129 COI sequences of B. tabaci identified from 16 Asian countries was downloaded from the GenBank database. Among the total 185 COI sequences of B. tabaci, the sequence variation reached to 19.68%. In addition, there were 31 cryptic species updated from 16 countries in Asia, that is, Asia I, Asia I India, Asia II (1-13), Asia III, Asia IV, Asia V, China 1-6, MEAM (1, 2, K), MED, Australia/Indonesia, Japan (1 and 2). Further, MED cryptic species consisted of 2 clades, Q1 and Q2. This study provides updated information to understand the genetic variation and geographic diversity of B. tabaci in Asia.

ABSTRACT

Herein, an effective technique of curing reaction-induced phase separation (CRIPS) was used to construct a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) network in the immiscible diglycidyl ether of the bisphenol A/polyetherimide (DGEBA/PEI) polyblend system. The unique chemical reduction of RGO facilitated the reduction of oxygenated groups and simultaneously appended amino groups that stimulate the curing process. The selective interfacial localization of RGO was predicted numerically by the harmonic and geometric mean technique and further confirmed by field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM) analysis. Due to interfacial localization, the electrical conductivity was increased to 366 S/m with 3 wt.% RGO reinforcement. The thermomechanical properties of nanocomposites were determined by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The storage modulus of 3 wt.% RGO-reinforced polyblend exhibited an improvement of ~15%, and glass transition temperature (Tg) was 10.1 °C higher over neat DGEBA. Furthermore, the total shielding effectiveness (SET) was increased to 25.8 dB in the X-band region, with only 3 wt.% RGO, which represents ~99.9% shielding efficiency. These phase separation-controlled nanocomposites with selective localization of electrically conductive nanofiller at a low concentration will extend the applicability of polyblends to multifunctional structural nanocomposite applications.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is an invasive pest species that has recently increased its range in most African and Asian countries, causing significant losses to crop yields, especially corn. To develop effective management strategies, it is particularly important to study the biology of FAW in various crops. Here, we utilized the age-stage, two-sex life table to examine the development, survival, and reproduction rate of the corn strain FAW on three different host plants: corn, rice, and potato. The corn strain FAW successfully completed its life cycle in rice and potato, as well as corn plants. However, the growth, developmental time, survival, and reproduction rate differed among the three host plants. The preadult survival rates in corn, rice, and potato were 92%, 81%, and 77%, respectively. Similarly, mean generation time was significantly shorter in corn (35 days), followed by rice (41 days) and potato (42 days), indicating more generations in corn. Interestingly, the net reproduction rate varied greatly among the three host plants. In corn-fed FAW, the net reproduction rate was 472 offspring per individual, whereas, in rice and potato crops, the rates were only 213 and 86 offspring per individual, respectively. Our results suggest that alternative host plants, such as potato and rice, have more effect on reproduction than the growth of corn strain FAW. These results may be useful in predicting the population dynamics of FAW and understanding the potential damage to crops, thus contributing to an appropriate management strategy in the newly FAW-invaded agricultural ecosystems.

BACKGROUND: Routine outcome-based monitoring is required to assess the status of consumption of iodized salt as USI strategy. OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent of recent iodine intake among children from 6 to 15 years of age in the hilly terrain of northern states of India. METHODS: A school-based cross-sectional observational study among 227 children attending school was done for assessment of socio-demographic, dietary, salt consumption and urinary iodine concentration (UIC). RESULTS: Mean age of children was about 6 years and 87.7% were consuming salt of >30 and none with <15 ppm iodine content. Median UIC was 138.0 µg/L. Among those assessed, 37.9% had adequate level of UIC, whereas about 20% and 40% participants had less (<99.0 µg/L) and more than adequate to excessive (≥200 µg/L) levels of UIC. Insignificant difference (p = 0.07) was observed for mean log UIC between cabbage eaters (2.3) and non-eaters (1.9) consuming salt >5 grams/day. CONCLUSION: Recent iodine intake among children observed to be inadequate and effect of cruciferous food items on UIC needs to be studied despite high coverage of iodized salt among children.

BACKGROUND: Under programmatic settings, routine monitoring and evaluation of household consumption of iodized salt are recommended to track the reach of universal salt iodization strategy. The program needs evaluation in different settings and locations. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess urine-based estimation for recent iodine intake among pregnant women living in hilly terrains of two districts of northern state of India. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional observational study was conducted during September- December 2019 among 202 randomly selected pregnant women in two districts of Himachal Pradesh. With a predesigned schedule, data regarding sociodemographic and behavioral factors and salt consumption were collected by interview. Iodine level of salt was assessed by spot iodine testing kit and urinary iodine concentration (UIC) was measured using ammonium persulfate digestion using spectrophotometer. RESULTS: Women had a mean age of about 26 years, and the period of gestation was of mean 163.7 days. The consumption of iodized salt (>15 ppm) at family level was found to be 83.7%, and the median UIC was 169.0 µg/L. Among assessed, 26.7% had an acceptable level of UIC, whereas 41.1% and 32.2% of women had less (<150 µg/L) and excessive (>250 µg/L) level of UIC, respectively. CONCLUSION: Recent iodine intake among pregnant women was observed to be adequate, but efforts are to be done to assess the reasons for less and excessive UIC among women.

ABSTRACT

Herein, a feasible and effective approach is developed to build an electrically conductive and double percolation network-like structure via the incorporation of highly reduced graphene oxide (HRGO) into a polymer blend of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A/polyetherimide (DGEBA/PEI). With the assistance of the curing reaction-induced phase separation (CRIPS) technique, an interconnected network of HRGO is formed in the phase-separated structure of the DGEBA/PEI polymer blend due to selective localization behavior. In this study, HRGO was prepared from a unique chemical reduction technique. The DGEBA/PEI/HRGO nanocomposite was analyzed in terms of phase structure by content of PEI and low weight fractions of HRGO (0.5 wt.%). The HRGO delivered a high electrical conductivity in DGEBA/PEI polyblends, wherein the value increased from 5.03 × 10-16 S/m to 5.88 S/m at a low content of HRGO (0.5 wt.%). Furthermore, the HRGO accelerated the curing reaction process of CRIPS due to its amino group. Finally, dynamic mechanical analyses (DMA) were performed to understand the CRIPS phenomenon and selective localization of HRGO reinforcement. The storage modulus increased monotonically from 1536 MPa to 1660 MPa for the 25 phr (parts per hundred in the DGEBA) PEI polyblend and reached 1915 MPa with 0.5 wt.% HRGO reinforcement. These simultaneous improvements in electrical conductivity and dynamic mechanical properties clearly demonstrate the potential of this conductive polyblend for various engineering applications.

ABSTRACT

The presence of harmful and poisonous gases in the environment can have dangerous effects on human health, and therefore portable, flexible, and highly sensitive gas sensors are in high demand for environmental monitoring, pollution control, and medical diagnosis. Currently, the commercialized sensors are based on metal oxides, which generally operate at high temperatures. Additionally, the desorption of chemisorbed gas molecules is also challenging. Hence, due to the large surface area, high flexibility, and good electrical properties of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) such as carbon nanotubes, graphene and their derivatives (graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and graphene quantum dots), they are considered to be the most promising chemiresistive sensing materials, where their electrical resistance is affected by their interaction with the analyte. Further, to increase their selectivity, nanocomposites of CNMs with metal oxides, metallic nanoparticles, chalcogenides, and polymers have been studied, which exhibit better sensing capabilities even at room temperature. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art progress in research related to CNMs-based sensors. Moreover, to better understand the analyte adsorption on the surface of CNMs, various sensing mechanisms and dependent sensing parameters are discussed. Further, several existing challenges related to CNMs-based gas sensors are elucidated herein, which can pave the way for future research in this area.

BACKGROUND: Lockdown effectively can only result in relative freezing of populations that is expected to slow down the disease spread rather than zeroing it. Flattening of epidemic curve Current analysis was carried out to observe a pattern in the rise of CoVID-19 cases along with concurrent announcements of strategies to control the spread of disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data in from of daily number of cases and issued notifications were studied from the official website of Government of India from 30/01/2020 to 03/05/2020. Qualitative assessment with thematic analysis was carried out for notifications issued by the government. The fit to data on cumulative cases was observed with R2 and checked for linearity, logarithmic, polynomial, and exponential growth. Daily growth fraction (Gt) was calculated based on the difference between current and previous number of cases, thereafter daily doubling time (Td(t)) was estimated. RESULTS: Daily reported cases were entered and cumulative growth of cases observed with a polynomial increasing pattern (third-order) with better fit (R2: 0.999). Total 108 notifications were issued, and as compared to phase-0 and 1 (87.0%), few (12.9%) notifications were issued in phase-2 of study period. As compared to phase-0 and 1, rising trend of cumulative cases and Td(t) was high in phase-2. CONCLUSION: Across phases of lockdown along with a rising trend of COVID-19 cases, the country has managed to increase the doubling time of cases with an effort to flatten the epidemic curve.

HYPOTHESIS: Various efforts are going on to improve the electrical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Conducting polymer is one the promising material to achieve the desired electrical properties of CFRP composites without compromising the mechanical properties as a lighting sticking material. EXPERIMENTS: In present study, in addition to conducting polymer polyaniline (PANI), another conducting phase reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was incorporated in PANI based system. The RGO was synthesized and incorporated in different weight (0-0.5 wt%) fraction in dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) doped PANI-divinylbenzene (DVB) polymer to get PANI-DBSA/DVB nanocomposite. The mechanical and interfacial interaction was analyzed by universal testing machine (UTM) and transmitted electron microscopy (TEM). FINDINGS: The addition of optimum 0.3 wt% RGO improved flexural strength and modulus of PANI-DSBA/RGO-DVB composite by 153% and 32% respectively over neat PANI-DBSA/DVB nanocomposite. The maximum electrical conductivity 0.301 S/cm, glass transition temperature (Tg) and thermal stability of nanocomposite realized at 0.3 wt% of RGO. Raman spectroscopy and HRTEM confirmed the improvement of interfacial bonding by H-bonding and π-π interaction. For the 1st time we are reporting RGO utilisation for the improvement of thermomechanical and electrical interfacial properties of PANI-DBSA/DVB nanocomposite for the structural applications.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The neurology register is based in a tertiary care center in a rural north-west India. The center caters to a predominantly rural population. The present study is based on the data retrieved from this registry over a period of 1 year. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Details of the patients reporting to the Department of Neurology are entered in a registry. For the purpose of this study, 1-year data (from August 1, 2013, to July 31, 2014) of patients (with complete information and final diagnosis) were analyzed. RESULTS: Out of a total of 2431 patients, 1296 (53.3%) were males and 1135 (46.7%) were females. The six major neurological disorders identified were epilepsy and seizures, headache, spondolysis with neurological manifestations, cerebrovascular disease, Parkinsonism, and neuropathies. CONCLUSION: Six neurological disorders account for more than two-thirds of the patients with neurological disorders, whereas epilepsy, seizures, and headache together constituted more than one-third.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antigenotoxic potential of P. aculeata L. leaf extract/fractions against maleic hydrazide (MH) using Allium cepa root chromosomal aberration assay. The excessive reduction in root growth and mitotic index value was observed after 3 h treatment of MH as compared to negative control (water). In case of MH treatment, frequency of aberrated cells significantly (p ≤ 0.05) raised from 129 to 337 at 0.1 ppm and 2.0 ppm concentrations respectively. From root growth inhibition test with MH treatment, EC50 value i.e. 0.5 ppm was selected to study the antigenotoxic effect of different extract/fractions of P. aculeata L. leaves. All the extract/fractions showed increase in mitotic index and great reduction in chromosomal aberrations with rise in concentration against the genotoxicity of MH. Among all the extract/fractions, butanol and ethyl acetate fractions showed significant reduction in chromosomal aberrations in A. cepa cells and indicates the chemo preventive activity. Antigenotoxic property of this plant is due to the presence of various phytochemicals in leaf such as epi-orientin, Parkinsonin-A, Parkinsonin-B, orientin, iso-orientin, vitexin, iso-vitexin, C-glycosylflavone, parkintin, rotenoids, terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, glycosides and anthraquinone etc. Our result showed that among all the treatments, simultaneous treatment showed best result followed by pre and post treatment. Further studies in animal model are suggested for further evaluation of the use of P. aculeata leaf extract in human welfare.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Bacterial endometritis is one of the major causes of reproductive disorders including infertility in farm animals. Antibiotics are generally used for treatment of such disorders but now a days residues of antibiotics are of great public health concern, therefore, phytoremediation is being considered as an alternative to use of antibiotics. AIM OF THE STUDY: Present study was undertaken to investigate the efficacy of Eucalyptus robusta leaves methanolic extract against endometritis along with the possible mechanism of action especially targeting inflammatory biomarkers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bacterial endometritis was produced using clinical isolates of E. coli and Staphyloccocus aureus from bovines (cows and buffaloes) endometritis cases. After seven days of inoculation of the mixed bacterial culture, endometritis was confirmed based on the presence of visible pus and edema, thinning of endometrial lining and presence of large number of polymorphonuclear cells and bacterial load in uterine flushing. Female Wistar rats were divided in to five groups namely control, sham-operated, endometritis, endometritis plus Eucalyptus leaves extract and endometritis plus cefixime. Serum specific inflammatory biomarkers (interleukin-1ß, interleukin-10, tumor necrosis factor-α, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, serum amyloid A) and myleoperoxidase, toll like receptors-4 and -9, inducible nitric oxide synthase, nitric oxide, cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 were estimated in uterine tissues using ELISA kits. RESULTS: Interleukin-10, serum amyloid A, myleoperoxidase, toll like receptors-4 and-9, cyclooxygenase-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase and nitric oxide were significantly increased while non significant increase in interleukin-1ß, cycloxygenase-1 and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 were observed but level of tumor necrosis factor-α was found decreased in rats of endometritis group. Histopathological lesions in uterus showed efficient induction of endometritis by presence of inflammatory cells which are lessened effectively after treatment with Eucalyptus leaves extract. Eucalyptus robusta leaves extract produced curative and protective effect against endometritis and results were comparable to or even better than cefixime. CONCLUSIONS: Eucalyptus robusta leaves extract possess promising antibacterial activity and efficacy against experimental endometritis and, therefore, holds promising potential for development of effective formulation for treatment of endometritis in animals.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Unprecedented low coverage (63%) of fully vaccinated (FV) children in the recent round of national survey district level household (HH) and facility survey 4 (DLHS-4) propelled health system of Himachal Pradesh for an independent rapid assessment of FV coverage. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the FV coverage among 12-23-month old children in the state. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A community-based survey with an interviewer-administered questionnaire was carried out in all 12 districts of Himachal Pradesh from September 2015 to January 2016. SUBJECT AND METHODS: WHO 30 × 7 cluster technique was used. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Chi-square and unpaired Student's t-test along with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: A total of 2492 children across 35,551 HHs (2.4% of state share) were surveyed with FV coverage of 98.1% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 97.5-98.6) and 86% (95% CI: 84.6-87.3) based on history and card, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The reported FV coverage in the current study was observed too high in the state as reported in earlier round of the national surveys (except DLHS-4).

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the epithelial thickness in the cornea and limbus in limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, comparative study. OCT images of 30 eyes of 19 patients with LSCD collected by AS-OCT were scanned. Corneal epithelial thickness was recorded at the central cornea and the superior, nasal, inferior, and temporal limbus. Measurment of the same region of 30 normal eyes served as control. Epithelial thickness in all locations was measured by 2 independent observers. RESULTS: The mean epithelial layer thickness was 61.3 ± 2.9 µ in the central cornea and 62.7 ± 4.3 µ in the limbus in the control. The epithelial thickness in LSCD patients was found to be 41.33 ± 2.8 µ. An average reduction of 22.2% in the central cornea and 32.15% in the limbus was found in patients with LSCD (P < 0.05). Epithelial thinning correlated with the severity of LSCD in both cornea and limbus. In eyes with sectoral LSCD, a similar degree of epithelial thinning was also detected in the clinically unaffected limbal regions. CONCLUSION: Both corneal and limbal epithelia become progressively thinner in LSCD. Epithelial thickness assessment using AS-OCT as a noninvasive tool could be used as a diagnostic measure of LSCD.
