ABSTRACT

Diverse development paths among cities within an urban agglomeration can lead to uneven changes in their agricultural production scale, which reshape the inter-city food supply patterns and the spatiotemporal characteristics of nitrogen (N) pollution from the food system. Here, using Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area of China as a case, we found a substantial decrease in N use efficiency of crop production from 45.2% to 29.3% during 1989-2007, along with a growing level of concentration of food N production in less-urbanized cities. From 1989 to 2018, 12.3% to 42.2% of total N pollution in food production became embedded in inter-city trade, leading to aggregation of N pollution in peripheral cities with relatively low levels of economic development. We suggest that protection and intensification of cropland from urban encroachment, as well as enhancing the economic and technical synergies among cities, can serve the sustainable transition of the food system with coordinated N pollution mitigation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The early diagnosis of acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) contributes to clinical outcomes since ALM can be mistaken for acral melanocytic nevus (AMN). ALM occurrence is reported to correlate with stress-bearing areas, which may assist in differential diagnoses. Our objective is to evaluate the distribution patterns of ALMs and AMNs on the palms and soles among Taiwanese patients. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed by reviewing the charts of 1400 patients diagnosed with benign and malignant pigmented lesions confirmed after excisional biopsy at our institution between 2000 and 2022 in Taiwan. Correlations between lesions and clinicopathological factors were analyzed. RESULTS: 309 AMNs and 177 ALMs were included. Mechanical stress was significantly associated with plantar ALMs (weight-bearing area: 92.65 %, arch: 7.35 %, P < 0.001). Significant differences in the distribution patterns were observed for plantar ALMs compared with all AMNs (P < 0.001) and non-atypical AMNs (P < 0.001), but were not observed between palmar AMNs and ALMs. CONCLUSION: Plantar ALMs were most commonly observed on the weight-bearing areas of the soles, distinct from the distribution of all AMNs and of non-atypical AMNs. The distribution features and anatomic mapping of ALMs may facilitate the early clinical diagnosis of ALM.

ABSTRACT

Nonprogrammed cell death (NPCD) and programmed cell death (PCD) are two types of cell death. Cell death is significantly linked to tumor development, medication resistance, cancer recurrence, and metastatic dissemination. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of cell death is essential for the treatment of cancer. Pyroptosis is a kind of PCD distinct from autophagy and apoptosis in terms of the structure and function of cells. The defining features of pyroptosis include the release of an inflammatory cascade reaction and the expulsion of lysosomes, inflammatory mediators, and other cellular substances from within the cell. Additionally, it displays variations in osmotic pressure both within and outside the cell. Pyroptosis, as evidenced by a growing body of research, is critical for controlling the development of inflammatory diseases and cancer. In this paper, we reviewed the current level of knowledge on the mechanism of pyroptosis and inflammasomes and their connection to cancer and inflammatory diseases. This article presents a theoretical framework for investigating the potential of therapeutic targets in cancer and inflammatory diseases, overcoming medication resistance, establishing nanomedicines associated with pyroptosis, and developing risk prediction models in refractory cancer. Given the link between pyroptosis and the emergence of cancer and inflammatory diseases, pyroptosis-targeted treatments may be a cutting-edge treatment strategy.

ABSTRACT

Under the strategic deployment of dual carbon goals, China has entered the stage of high-quality development of low-carbon economic transformation. Green finance is an important tool to provide financing support for the development of green low-carbon projects and prevent environmental and climate financial risks. Whether and how it can help the implementation of the dual carbon goals is worth pondering and studying. Based on this background, this study considers the green finance reform and innovation pilot policy zone jointly issued by the Central People's Bank of China, National Development, and Reform Commission in 2017 as a natural experiment. Based on the panel data of 288 cities nationwide from 2010 to 2019, the effect of emission reduction is estimated using the PSM-DID method. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) The green finance policy has effectively improved the city's environmental quality, and the pilot effect of green finance has a certain lag on SO2 emissions and industrial smoke (dust) emissions; (2) the mechanism inspection shows that the policy mechanism has promoted the technological innovation level, sewage treatment capacity, and garbage harmless treatment capacity of the pilot area to a certain extent; and (3) the impact of green finance policy on environmental quality has regional and industrial characteristics heterogeneity. The green finance pilot policy in eastern and central regions will inhibit SO2 emissions, but the emission reduction effect in western regions is not significant; The implementation of the pilot policy of the green financial reform and innovation pilot zone has significantly reduced the sulfur dioxide emissions of the old industrial base cities, but the effect of the policy on non-old industrial bases is not obvious. The research conclusion has important enlightenment significance for further improving the construction of financial system, promoting the green transformation of regional industry, and improving the quality of urban environment.

ABSTRACT

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective for pain relief in children and adolescents with functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs). However, few studies have focused on the FAPDs specifically and the medium-term or long-term results of CBT. In this meta-analysis, we investigated the efficacy of CBT in pediatric FAPDs and unclassified chronic or recurrent abdominal pain (CAP and RAP, respectively). We searched the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases for related randomized controlled trials until August 2021. Eventually, 10 trials with 872 participants were included. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed, and data on two primary and four secondary outcomes of interest were extracted. We used the standardized mean difference (SMD) to measure the same outcome, and precisions of effect sizes were reported as 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We found that CBT had significantly positive effects on reducing pain intensity immediately (SMD: -0.54 [CI: -0.9, -0.19], p = 0.003), 3 months after the intervention (SMD: -0.55; [CI: -1.01, -0.1], p = 0.02) and 12 months after the intervention (SMD: -0.32; [CI: -0.56, -0.08], p = 0.008). CBT also reduced the severity of gastrointestinal symptoms, depression, and solicitousness, improved the quality of life and decreased the total social cost. Future studies should consider uniform interventions in the control group and comparing different CBT delivery methods.

ABSTRACT

As a financial activity with the main purpose of ecological protection and environmental governance, green investment has important practical significance for promoting sustainable economic development. Previous studies have not addressed the relationship between green investment, clean energy consumption, carbon emissions, and economic growth. We use panel data from 30 provinces and cities in China from 2003 to 2017 to build a simultaneous equation model, which can evaluate the nonlinear relationship and avoid the endogeneity of the model. The research results show that, firstly, green investment has a significant positive impact on clean energy consumption and economic growth. However, it has no significant effect on carbon dioxide emissions. Second, the curve of clean energy consumption and per capita GDP conforms to the positive U-shaped characteristic, while the curve of carbon emissions and per capita GDP conforms to the EKC curve, meeting the inverted U-shaped characteristic. And the inflection point of clean energy use occurred earlier than the inflection point of CO2 emissions. When per capita GDP is greater than 105,735.93 (RMB), the use of clean energy will increase, and carbon dioxide emissions will decrease, thereby achieving a win-win situation for the environment and the economy. Finally, according to the survey results, it is suggested that green investment is an effective means to encourage clean energy consumption and economic growth.

ABSTRACT

With the rapid development of the express delivery industry, the environmental issues of express packaging waste (EPW) have gradually attracted public attention worldwide. As important participants, consumers' behaviors and attitudes will play a vital role in solving the problem. This study uses the conditional value method (CVM) to evaluate the differences in the attitudes and willingness to pay of urban and rural residents toward EPW in Guangdong Province, China. The results show that the respondents have limited knowledge of the recycling situation, relevant policies and environmental impacts of express delivery packaging, although more than 60% of respondents do think that there is a problem with excessive packaging. The low recycling rate for packaging materials is mainly attributed to the lack of recycling facilities and publicity on environmental issues. The differences between urban and rural residents are mainly over disposal methods, the views on excessive packaging and willingness to pay (WTP) for EPW. Finally, the WTP values of urban and rural residents choosing a "deposit" system are 1.58 ($0.24) and 1.79 yuan ($0.28) per piece, respectively, while the WTP values (for increased fees) are 0.64 yuan ($0.10) and 0.60 yuan ($0.09) per piece, respectively. The obtained results may serve as a reference for different regional responses to the promotion and improvement of EPW management in the future.

ABSTRACT

This study developed a prediction model for estimating urban inland waterway traffic noise emission level. The model based on the Scandinavian Nord 2000 method, which was modified by adding two categories of traffic flow, comprising light and heavy vessels, as well as vessel average speed to the calculating equations. Meanwhile, the influences of the water surface and embankment were also considered in the established model. Model verification was conducted using the data surveyed at the 30 sampling points of Danjinlicaohe Channel in Jiangsu Province of China. A high correlation was found between the predicted and measured noise values LAeq (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.949, p < 0.01). And the mean difference between the predicted and measured noise values was 0.16 ± 1.28 dBA. The results showed that the proposed model had higher accuracy than the unmodified Nord 2000 method and can be applied for predicting vessel noise exposure level on inland waterway of China.

ABSTRACT

Small molecule inhibitors have proven useful in the treatment of a variety of tumors, but they are often limited by unsustainable benefits and confer resistance quickly. Immunotherapy can result in durable clinical responses, but activity only occurs in a minority of patients. The unfavorable tumor microenvironment (TME) is an important factor limiting immunotherapy. An appropriate understanding of how small molecule inhibitors modulate the TME may optimize the combination of targeted treatment and immunotherapy in managing tumors. In this study, we found that transient treatment with sunitinib malate inhibited the disorganized extension of tumor vessels, pericytes and collagen IV but increased the relative ratio of pericyte-wrapping blood vessels with alleviated hypoxia in tumors, which resulted from tumor vascular normalization. Sunitinib malate increased infiltration of CD8+ T cells and decreased regulatory T cells (Tregs), accompanied by inhibited expression of TGF-ß1 and IL-10 and increased CCL-28, IFN-γ and IL-12, but no significant inhibition of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) was observed. In addition, sunitinib malate increased the levels of PD-1 and PD-L1 in TME, combined with anti-PD-1 therapy showed a significant reduction in tumor burden compared with either monotherapy, suggesting that anti-PD-1 therapy is reasonable after sunitinib malate treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To identify empirical evidence on the effectiveness of Tai Chi in treating fibromyalgia (FM). METHOD: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to compare the effectiveness of Tai Chi and standard care or conventional therapeutic exercise in patients with FM. PubMed, Medline, and Physiotherapy Evidence Database were searched for relevant studies published before May 2019. Treatment effectiveness was evaluated using the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ), and the total score, pain score, sleep quality index, fatigue, depression, and quality of life were assessing among the patients. RESULTS: Six RCTs with 657 patients were included. Results of our meta-analysis indicated that Tai Chi exerts significant positive effects on reducing the total FIQ score at 12-16 weeks (standard mean difference [SMD]: -0.61; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.90 to -0.31) and pain score (SMD: -0.88; 95% CI: -1.58 to -0.18), improving sleep quality (SMD: -0.57; 95% CI: -0.86 to -0.28), relieving fatigue (SMD: -0.92; 95% CI: -1.81 to -0.04), alleviating depression (SMD: -0.49; 95% CI: -0.97 to -0.01), and enhancing quality of life physically (SMD: 6.21; 95% CI: 3.18-9.24) and psychologically (SMD: 5.15; 95% CI: 1.50-8.81). CONCLUSION: Tai Chi exerts significantly greater effects on patients with FM than standard care; therefore, we suggest that Tai Chi can be used as an alternative treatment. However, more large-scale, high-quality, and multicenter trials are required to provide stronger evidence on the effectiveness of Tai Chi, as an alternative to aerobic exercise, compared with conventional therapeutic exercise.

ABSTRACT

Objective To determine the efficacy and safety of lactoferrin combined with zinc for mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Methods A total of 126 patients with mild and moderate acne were randomly divided into the trial and control groups. The levels of serum zinc,IL-1 and IL-17 were detected before and after treatment. The skin lesions, the EGSS and therapeutic effect were compared between the two groups. Results Before treatment, the level of zinc in the trial group and the control group was(10.12 ± 1.75)μmol/L and(10.35 ± 1.68)μmol/L, respectively(P = 0.09). After 8 weeks, the level of zinc in the trial group was(15.09 ± 1.336)μmol/L,and the control group was(9.98 ± 1.26)μmol/L,with statistically significant difference(t = 2.41,P = 0.022). Before treatment, the level of IL-1 and IL-17 in the trial group were(1.935 ± 0.023)pg/mL and(3.68 ± 0.08)pg/mL, whereas in the control group were(1.897 ± 0.032)pg/mL and(3.71 ± 0.06)pg/mL,respectively(P = 0.16, 0.21). After 8 weeks of treatment, the trial group IL-1β,serum IL-17 levels were(1.327 ± 0.032)pg/mL and (2.48 ± 0.06)pg/mL;the control group respectively(1.902 ± 0.028)pg/mL and(3.62 ± 0.04)pg/mL(P =0.015,0.0011);the fourth week EGSS score had statistical significance(P < 0.05). At 8 weeks, the score of EGSS was significantly lower than that of the control group(t = 2.51,P = 0.006). The total effective rate and re-covery rate was significantly between the two groups. Conclusions This study showed that intake of lactoferrin with zinc can significantly reduce the level of IL-1β and IL-17,improve the severity of acne lesions in people with acne vulgaris. These data supported the potential use of lactoferrin as a safe and effective alternative or adjunct ther-apy to standard acne treatments.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Double eyelidplasty can enhance the eye size and facial attractiveness of Asian individuals with single eyelids. The authors hypothesize that a supratarsal fold can induce an eye size assimilation illusion to enhance eye dimensions and aesthetics, and seek to define the optimum vertical proportion between a supratarsal fold and the eye fissure associated with maximal induction of the size assimilation illusion. METHODS: A photometric study of the replicated photographs of ten female Taiwanese patients after double eyelidplasty was designed. Each photograph was edited by shifting the supratarsal folds vertically at a regular fold/eye ratio increment of 0.1. The perceived attractiveness of edited photographs of each patient was rated by 100 adult observers using a score of 1-5. The palpebral parameters were measured and analyzed. RESULTS: The mean rating score increased gradually when a supratarsal fold was added and peaked when the fold/eye ratio was 0.3 and the mean Chen's double eyelid fold ratio was 0.631 ± 0.023. After the peak, the mean score decreased gradually and was lower than the photograph without a fold when the fold/eye ratio exceeded 0.5 and the mean Chen's ratio exceeded 0.729 ± 0.027. CONCLUSION: Within the optimal ranges of the fold/eye ratio and Chen's double eyelid fold ratio, eyes are perceived as larger and more attractive due to a hybrid presentation of two interdependent eye size assimilation illusions induced by a supratarsal fold in the brow-eye unit. "Chen's double eyelid fold illusion" is proposed to describe this complex visual phenomenon. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE IV: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: During tumor formation and expansion, increasing glucose metabolism is necessary for unrestricted growth of tumor cells. Expression of key glycolytic enzyme alpha-enolase (ENO1) is controversial and its modulatory mechanisms are still unclear in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: The expression of ENO1 was examined in NSCLC and non-cancerous lung tissues, NSCLC cell lines, and immortalized human bronchial epithelial cell (HBE) by quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR), immunohistochemistry, and Western blot, respectively. The effects and modulatory mechanisms of ENO1 on cell glycolysis, growth, migration, invasion, and in vivo tumorigenesis and metastasis in nude mice were also analyzed. RESULTS: ENO1 expression was increased in NSCLC tissues in comparison to non-cancerous lung tissues. Similarly, NSCLC cell lines A549 and SPCA-1 also express higher ENO1 than HBE cell line in both mRNA and protein levels. Overexpressed ENO1 significantly elevated NSCLC cell glycolysis, proliferation, clone formation, migration, and invasion in vitro, as well as tumorigenesis and metastasis in vivo by regulating the expression of glycolysis, cell cycle, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated genes. Conversely, ENO1 knockdown reversed these effects. More importantly, our further study revealed that stably upregulated ENO1 activated FAK/PI3K/AKT and its downstream signals to regulate the glycolysis, cell cycle, and EMT-associated genes. CONCLUSION: This study showed that ENO1 is responsible for NSCLC proliferation and metastasis; thus, ENO1 might serve as a potential molecular therapeutic target for NSCLC treatment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Double-eyelid procedure to construct a supratarsal fold is the most common aesthetic surgery in young Asian adults. More complex surgical procedures, such as fat grafting or filler injection, are often indicated during traditional, long-incision, double-eyelid procedures to achieve better aesthetic results for patients with hollowness of the upper eyelids. OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to determine the efficacy of minimally-invasive double-eyelid procedures with concurrent repositioning of the orbital fat pads to correct sunken upper eyelids in young Asian adults. METHODS: The study included 250 patients treated between June 2008 and July 2103. Preoperatively, all patients complained of upper-eyelid hollowness and had positive findings on a lower-eyelid compression test. All patients underwent a minimally-invasive double-eyelid procedure plus repositioning of orbital fat. RESULTS: After the minimum follow-up period of 1 year, the overall patient satisfaction rate was 76%. The relapse rate was 10% within the first year, and the complication rate was 8%. CONCLUSIONS: This minimally-invasive combination procedure may be an option for young Asian adults who have single upper eyelids and sunken eyes. The surgery resulted in a natural double eyelid and more youthful orbital appearance in the majority of patients in this study. Proper patient selection and evaluation, including lower eyelid compression testing, are essential to achieve long-term correction.

ABSTRACT

Taxus chinensis var. mairei is an endemic and endangered plant species in China. The resources of T. chinensis var. mairei have been excessively exploited due to its anti-cancer potential, accordingly, the extant T. chinensis var. mairei population is decreasing. In this paper, ultrasonic extraction and HPLC were adopted to determine the contents of active components paclitaxel, 7-xylosyltaxol and cephalomannine in cultivated and wild T. chinensis var. mairei plants, with the content distribution of these components in different parts of the plants having grown for different years and at different slope aspects investigated. There existed obvious differences in the contents of these active components between cultivated and wild T. chinensis var. mairei plants. The paclitaxel content in the wild plants was about 0.78 times more than that in the cultivated plants, whereas the 7-xylosyltaxol and cephalomannine contents were slishtly higher in the cultivated plants. The differences in the three active components contents between different parts and tree canopies of the plants were notable, being higher in barks and upper tree canopies. Four-year old plants had comparatively higher contents of paclitaxel, 7-xylosyltaxol and cephalomannine (0.08, 0.91 and 0.32 mg x g(-1), respectively), and the plants growing at sunny slope had higher contents of the three active components, with significant differences in the paclitaxel and 7-xylosyltaxol contents and unapparent difference in the cephalomannine content of the plants at shady slope. It was suggested that the accumulation of the three active components in T. chinensis var. mairei plants were closely related to the sunshine conditions. To appropriately increase the sunshine during the artificial cultivation of T. chinensis var. mairei would be beneficial to the accumulation of the three active components in T. chinensis var. mairei plants.

In the Macao Peninsula, the high population density (49,763 inhabitants/km2) and the lack of control over the number of vehicles (460 vehicles/km) have led to an increase in urban pollution. To provide useful information to local government and urban planners, this paper investigates the spatial distribution of traffic noise in the Macao Peninsula. The interactions among urban form, traffic flow and traffic noise are addressed. Considering the spatial nature of urban geometry and traffic, a high-resolution GIS-based traffic noise model system is applied. Results indicate that the Macao Peninsula has fallen into a situation of serious traffic noise pollution. About 60% of traffic noise levels along the major pedestrian sidewalks in the evening peak hour exceed the National Standard of 70 dB(A) in China. In particular, about 21% of traffic noise levels along the pedestrian sidewalks are above the National Standard by 5 dB(A). Noticeably, the high pedestrian exposure to traffic noise in the historical urban area reduces the comfort of tourists walking in the historic centre and is ruining the reputation of the area as a World Cultural Heritage site.
