ABSTRACT

In order to examine the effects of radiation, chemicals, and social factors on the incidence of different diseases in the population living in the vicinity of atomic industry facilities, the site of the Production Association 'Mayak' has been selected for detailed analyses. Diseases under study were morbidity among newborns including congenital anomalies, diseases of respiratory organs, and cancer. Using a regression model, no statistically significant correlation was found between incidence and radiation exposure.

ABSTRACT

During the last 15 years, the incidence of oropharyngeal cancer in the Chelyabinsk region increased from 2.0 to 5.7 per 100,000 of population. Lethality was 2.8 per 100,000. The radiological service of the region includes 4 radiological departments with a total of 270 beds equipped with 7 and units for gamma-ray teletherapy whereas in the oncological dispensary intrathecal gamma-ray therapy can be performed. Under these conditions, it is justified to plan treatment in the regional dispensary and to carry out gamma-ray teletherapy in the radiological department located most closely to the patient's place of residence whereas interstitial therapy should be performed in the dispensary. The said approach assured higher efficacy of treatment, better psychosocial status of patients and shorter duration of therapy; it holds promise for tumors of other sites requiring complex and costly procedures of intrathecal irradiation.

ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with a pressing problem of clinical endocrinology: diagnosis of diseases of the neuroendocrine system at early stages. Examination of workers in a large enterprise of a leading industrial branch was based on a special screening program. The results obtained lay in the basis of recommendations on the primary and secondary prevention of neuroendocrine diseases provided to workers in a sanatorium-preventorium without giving up their work. A complex of health-improving measures is aimed at the prevention of disease in persons having risk factors and at maintaining the working ability among patients with neuroendocrine disturbance.

ABSTRACT

The vascular brain plexi were studied in 40 cases of rheumatism, 18 cases of systemic lupus vulgaris, 12 cases of nodus periarthritis and 5 cases of sclerodermia. In all cases there were phenomena of a desorganization of the connective tissue in the stroma and vascular walls accompanied by a significant accumulation of acid mucopolysaccharides, panvasculitis, thrombovasculitis, necrobiotic changes of the chorioid epithelium and nervous filaments. The authors report of special traits of structural changes inherent in each disease.
