A 3-day-old infant, born to a mother with preeclampsia, suffered intrauterine asphyxia and subsequently had multiple erythematous subcutaneous plaques and nodules. The clinical setting, the skin manifestations, and the histologic appearance of the lesions were diagnostic of subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn. Transient thrombocytopenia was noted with the appearance of the skin lesions, but returned to normal as the skin lesions spontaneously resolved.

The major characteristics of tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndrome (TRPS) include shortened and deviated digits, a typical facies with a pear-shaped nose, a long philtrum and slow-growing, fine, sparse hair. Cone-shaped digital epiphyses are seen on x-ray. A few patients with TRPS are mentally retarded. Associated endocrine abnormalities have been reported. Autosomal dominant and recessive patterns of inheritance have been described with most cases showing a dominant mode of inheritance.

Burns caused by exposure to hydrofluoric acid are occurring with ever-increasing frequency due to the wide use of this acid in industry and research. Such burns are characterized by severe progressive tissue destruction and excruciating pain resulting from the unique properties of the freely dissociable fluoride ion. The subungual tissues are especially susceptible to the destructive effects of hydrofluoric acid. The proper treatment of hydrofluoric acid burns requires prompt recognition and the institution of specific therapeutic measures by the attending physician.

The Shulman syndrome is a symptom complex recently described in the rheumatology literature that is characterized by eosinophilia, hypergammaglobulinemia, and a diffuse scleroderma-like process of the extremities. The onset of illness has been associated with a period of unusual physical exertion. The condition seems to respond to corticosteroid therapy for systemic effect.

One of the more unusual forms of supernumerary breast tissue is characterized by the presence of areolar tissue only. The case presented describes a patient with three supernumerary areolae, including one located outside the embryonic milk line. There is a possibility that this finding represents an atavistic phenomenon.
