ABSTRACT

Soft robots exhibit complex nonlinear dynamics with large degrees of freedom, making their modelling and control challenging. Typically, reduced-order models in time or space are used in addressing these challenges, but the resulting simplification limits soft robot control accuracy and restricts their range of motion. In this work, we introduce an end-to-end learning-based approach for fully dynamic modelling of any general robotic system that does not rely on predefined structures, learning dynamic models of the robot directly in the visual space. The generated models possess identical dimensionality to the observation space, resulting in models whose complexity is determined by the sensory system without explicitly decomposing the problem. To validate the effectiveness of our proposed method, we apply it to a fully soft robotic manipulator, and we demonstrate its applicability in controller development through an open-loop optimization-based controller. We achieve a wide range of dynamic control tasks including shape control, trajectory tracking and obstacle avoidance using a model derived from just 90 min of real-world data. Our work thus far provides the most comprehensive strategy for controlling a general soft robotic system, without constraints on the shape, properties, or dimensionality of the system.

ABSTRACT

Chicken astrovirus (CAstV) infection can cause diarrhea, nephritis, stunted growth, and "white chickens" condition, resulting in economic losses to the poultry industry. Currently, a few CAstVs were isolated and a few full-length genome sequences of CAstV have been deposited in the GenBank. In the present study, two CAstV isolates (AAstV/Chicken/CHN/2017/NJ01 and AAstV/Chicken/CHN/2018/CZ01) were successfully isolated by using LMH cells, and we molecularly characterized these two CAstV isolates and observed the effect of these two isolates on hatchability using chicken embryo infection experiment. The genetic analysis demonstrated that these two strains had the typical characteristics of avian astroviruses, which were composed of three open reading frames, 5'UTR, and 3'UTR. The full-length genome sequence showed a high-degree identity at nucleotide level of 97.5-98.7% among Chinese isolates suggesting their common ancestors and limited sequence divergence. Sequence analysis of ORF2, which encodes the capsid protein associated with classification of avian astrovirus, revealed our two isolates belonging to CAstV Bi subtype. At the amino acid level, the complete capsid region of Chinese strains shared genetic distances of 0.03-0.04 with FP3 strains isolated from the UK, suggesting their common origin. Meanwhile, hatchability reduction was observed. These results provided novel insights into the molecular epidemiology and hatchability effect of CAstV.

BACKGROUND: Cyromazine (CYR) and its main degradation product melamine (MEL) are attracting wide attention due to their potential hazards to the environment and humans. In this work, double surfactants-assisted electromembrane extraction (DS-EME) by Tween 20 and alkylated phosphate was firstly used for purification and extraction of CYR and MEL, and the extract was directly analyzed by capillary electrophoresis with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection. RESULTS: Under the optimum conditions, two targets could be well separated from the main interferences, including common biogenic amines and inorganic cations within 14 min. This developed method was successfully applied to the analyses of surface water, soil and cucumber samples, and the average recoveries were in the range 93.3-112%. DS-EME provided a synergistic purification and enrichment effect for CYR and MEL by adding Tween 20 and alkylated phosphate into donor phase and supporting liquid membrane, respectively. Satisfactory limits of detection [0.2-1.5 ng mL-1 , signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) = 3] could be obtained in the tested sample matrices, and the corresponding enrichment factors were up to 115∼123 times. CONCLUSION: This developed method provides an alternative for the simultaneous analysis of CYR and MEL in complex real-world samples. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

A tributyl phosphate assisted hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction coupled with capillary electrophoresis-contactless coupled conductivity detection (HF-LPME/CE-C4D) method has been developed for trace analysis of common short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) without derivatization. Under the optimum conditions, ten SCFAs including a pair of isomers were well separated from their homologous FAs and the main coexisting inorganic anions within 40 min. Tributyl phosphate assisted HF-LPME produced excellent purification and enrichment for the model sample with high-salt matrix, microbial degradation fluid, and the limits of detection could reach 0.072-0.67 ng/mL (S/N = 3). Owing to its high sensitivity, good linearity, and acceptable recovery, this proposed method provided a sensitive and environment-friendly alternative for trace analysis of SCFAs in complicated samples.

ABSTRACT

MicroRNA-613 (miR-613) plays important roles in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. We aimed to evaluate its expression level and potential for diagnosis and prognosis in esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC). We examined miR-613 expression in 60 pairs of ESCC cancerous and matched paracancerous tissues, serum samples from 75 ESCC patients and 75 healthy volunteers, and 105 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, Kaplan-Meier method, and Cox regression were applied to analyze its diagnostic and prognostic value. MiR-613 was significantly decreased in ESCC tissue compared with paracancerous tissue (P < 0.001). Moreover, the expression level of miR-613 was significantly reduced with increased T stage of ESCC. Statistically significant difference between ESCC patients and healthy controls in expression level of miR-613 (0.89 ± 0.73 vs. 1.71 ± 1.03, P < 0.001) was found. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) based on serum miR-613 was 0.767 ± 0.040. We also performed analysis on early-stage patients and revealed that the AUC value was 0.728 ± 0.052 (P < 0.001). The Kaplan-Meier curve revealed that the downregulation of miR-613 was related to worse overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of ESCC patients (P = 0.018 and P = 0.035, respectively). Furthermore, the multivariate analysis identified miR-613 to be an independent prognostic factor for OS and PFS (P = 0.031 and P = 0.006, respectively) In conclusion, miR-613 is significantly reduced in cancerous tissue and serum samples of ESCC patients. It can serve as an ideal indicator for the diagnosis and prognosis of ESCC.
