ABSTRACT

Searching for half-metals in low dimensional materials is not only of scientific importance, but also has important implications for the realization of spintronic devices on a small scale. In this work, we show theoretically that simple bending can induce spin-splitting in bilayer silicene. For bilayer silicene with Bernal stacking, the monolayer has a long range ferromagnetic spin order and between the two monolayers, the spin orders are opposite, giving rise to an antiferromagnetic configuration for the ground state of the bilayer silicene. Under bending, the antiferromagnetic spin order is retained but the energetic degeneracy of opposite spin states is lifted. Due to the unusual deformation potentials of the conduction band minimum (CBM) and valence band maximum (VBM) as revealed by density-functional theory calculations and density-functional tight-binding calculations, this spin-splitting is nearly proportional to the degree of bending deformation. Consequently, the spin-splitting can be significant and the desired half-metallic state may emerge when the bending increases, which has been verified by direct simulation of the bent bilayer silicene using the generalized Bloch theorem. Our results hint that bilayer silicene may be an excellent candidate for half-metallicity.

ABSTRACT

Realization of half-metallicity (HM) in low dimensional materials is a fundamental challenge for nano spintronics and a critical component for developing alternative generations of information technology. Using first-principles calculations, we reveal an unconventional deformation potential for zigzag nanoribbons (NRs) of 2D-Xenes. Both the conduction band minimum (CBM) and valence band maximum (VBM) of the edge states have negative deformation potentials. This unique property, combined with the localization and spin-polarization of the edge states, enables us to induce spin-splitting and HM using an inhomogeneous strain pattern, such as simple in-plane bending. Indeed, our calculation using the generalized Bloch theorem reveals the predicted HM in bent zigzag silicene NRs. Furthermore, the magnetic stability of the long range magnetic order for the spin-polarized edge states is maintained well against the bending deformation. These aspects indicate that it is a promising approach to realize HM in low dimensions with the zigzag 2D-Xene NRs.

ABSTRACT

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a big problem in China where the Hepatitis B (HBV) infection patients are near to 120 million. Early screening and diagnosis is the key to reduce the incidence and mortality of HCC. Serum AFP detection is the main methods for diagnosis, recurrent monitoring and therapeutic evaluation of primary HCC. Hepatitis patients should detect the AFP at least once every six months to help early diagnosis of HCC. Unfortunately, most hepatitis and other liver disease patients do not test their AFP regularly. Therefore, a rapid, convenient detect kit for AFP is necessary for the hepatitis patients to test AFP at home by themselves. It will be very helpful to the HCC early screening and early diagnosis. We screened 859 individuals who were HBsAg positive and had high risk of HCC in Qidong by using two different kits, AFP one-step rapid detection kit (Shanghai Outdo Biotech) and AFP Diagnostics ELISA kit (Zhengzhou Autobio Diagnostics), and compared the results. As a result, the positive accordance rate and the negative accordance rate of AFP one-step rapid detection kit and the Autobio ELISA kit were 95.65% (22/23) and 99.40% (831/836), respectively. The total diagnose accordance rate reached up to 99.30% (853/859). The screening results showed a high accordance rate of two methods. It is so meaningful to achieve home-test and improve HCC early screening and diagnosis by using AFP one-step rapid detection kit.

ABSTRACT

In this study, an indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with chemiluminescent (CLELISA) detection for 3-amino-5-morpholinomethyl-2-oxazolidone (AMOZ) was developed. A monoclonal antibody (MAb) against AMOZ was prepared through immunizing BALB/c mice with 4-carboxybenzaldehyle derivatized AMOZ (CPAMOZ), conjugated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) as antigen. The effects of the substrates luminol, p-iodophenol and urea peroxide on the performance of the assay were studied and optimized. In addition, the specificity of the MAb, estimated as the cross-reactivity values with 4-nitrobenzaldehyde derivatized AMOZ (NPAMOZ), CPAMOZ and AMOZ, was 100%, 27.45% and 0.18%, respectively. The sensitivity of the developed CLELISA was estimated as 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) value (0.14µg/l) with a linear working range between 0.03 and 64µg/l, and a limit of detection of 0.01µg/l. The CLELISA described in this study was 5-fold more sensitive than the indirect competitive ELISA previously developed in our laboratory. Finally, this new CLELISA was compared with a commercial kit to detect NPAMOZ in spiked fish, shrimp, honey and egg samples. The recovery values from four spiked fish, shrimp, honey and egg samples with different concentrations of NPAMOZ in CLELISA were 92.1-107.7%. Thus, the immunoassay method described here has a broad detection range and high sensitivity and is a valid and cost-effective means for high throughput monitoring of residual AMOZ levels in fish, shrimps, honey and eggs with potential applications in other animal tissues.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is prevalent in most areas of the world and may cause abortions or neonatal complications in humans. As the only definitive host, cats play an important role in the epidemiology of the disease. Infection rates in cats, especially stray or free-living cats, are considered to be the best sentinels of the level of T. gondii in the environment. The T. gondii infection can be diagnosed in different ways with different methods depending on the target. However, little information on T. gondii infection in cats was available in Shanghai, China. Moreover reports on prevalence of circulating antigens, antibodies and DNA of T. gondii in the same study are rare. METHODS: In the present study, the presence of antibodies (Ab), circulating antigens (CA), and/or DNA of Toxoplasma gondii in samples from 145 stray or unwanted cats from 6 animal shelters in Shanghai (China) was determined in order to estimate the prevalence of T. gondii infection, by Ab-ELISA, CA-ELISA, and nested-PCR, respectively. RESULTS: The positive rates for the antibodies, circulating antigen and DNA of T. gondii were 11.7% (17 of 145), 5.5% (8 of 145) and 5.71% (2 of 35), respectively. No cat tested was positive by both the Ab-ELISA and the CA-ELISA, but the results of the PCR were consistent with the CA-ELISA assay. Therefore, the overall estimated prevalence of toxoplasmosis was 17.2% (25 of 145). According to our results, the positive rates of specific antibodies and circulating antigen of T. gondii were significantly different between adult cats (>1 year old) and juvenile cats (≤1 year old); the former was 13.5% versus 3.9% by Ab-ELISA, while the latter was 1.7% versus 23.1% by CA-ELISA. From the results obtained with all three detection methods used in this study, the rate of infection was not significantly different between male and female cats (P ≥0.05); and the overall rate was 17.9% for males versus 16.4% for females. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that detection of circulating antigens (CA) is necessary in surveys of T. gondii infection, especially for juvenile cats. Our investigation revealed that the prevalence of T. gondii infection in stray cats in Shanghai is high. Control programs are needed for stray cat populations in order to reduce the risk of zoonotic transmission of toxoplasmosis to other domestic animals and humans, especially females.

ABSTRACT

Unsaturated fatty acids are synthesized by fatty acid desaturase in plant, which play an important role in plant development and defense to abiotic stresses. The key enzymes for the conversion of oleic into linoleic acid were isolated from rice (Oryza sativa L.) and were designated OsFAD2 and OsFAD6, respectively. The open reading frame (ORF) of OsFAD2 was 1 167 bp in length, which encoded a 388 amino acids sequence with the isoelectric point of 8.17 and molecular mass of 52.24 kDa, the OsFAD2 protein contained a C-terminal ER retrieval motif. The ORF of OsFAD6 was 1 365 bp in length and the predicted OsFAD6 protein has 454 amino acids with an estimated molecular mass of 44.35 kDa and an isoelectric point of 9.24, the predicted OsFAD6 protein possessed a putative N-terminal plastidial signal peptide. Both of them had three his-boxes, which were peculiar to membrane integrated fatty acid desaturase by Clustal X analysis. RT-PCR analysis showed that both genes were expressed in all tissues rice seedlings, with the maximum transcript accumulation in leaves. Among FAD family members of Oryza sativa L., the mRNA abundance of OsFAD2 and OsFAD6 in leaves did not change under cold stress; however, the mRNA abundance of OsFAD7 and OsFAD8 increased in the same condition. It was also found that the expression of FAD family members had diurnal rhythm phenomena. Based on the results of this study, it suggested that diurnal rhythm expression of OsFAD6 and OsFAD7 was related to the change of NADPH abundance.

ABSTRACT

To effectively conserve sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) germplasm on two islands at the estuary of the Yangtze River in China, we estimated genetic variation and relationships of the known parental trees and their proposed descendents (young trees) using the fingerprints of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Results based on RAPD analyses showed considerable genetic diversity in the parental populations (H(e)=0.202). The overall populations including the parental and young trees showed slightly higher genetic diversity (H(e)=0.298) than the parents, with about 10% variation between populations. An unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean analysis dendrogram based on cluster analysis of the Jaccard similarity among individuals demonstrated a more complicated relationship of the parental and young trees from the two islands, although the young trees showed a clear association with parental trees. This indicates a significant contribution of parental trees in establishing the sour orange populations on the two islands. According to farmers' knowledge, conservation of only one or two parental trees would be sufficient because they believed that the whole populations were generated from a single mother tree. However, this study suggests that preserving most parental trees and some selected young trees with distant genetic relationships should be an effective conservation strategy for sour orange germplasm on the two islands.
