ABSTRACT

Fecal microbiota transplantation from patients with depression/inflammatory bowel disease (PDI) causes depression with gut inflammation in mice. Here, we investigated the effects of six Lactobacillus reuteri strains on brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF), serotonin, and interleukin (IL)-6 expression in neuronal or macrophage cells and PDI fecal microbiota-cultured microbiota (PcM)-induced depression in mice. Of these strains, L6 most potently increased BDNF and serotonin levels in corticosterone-stimulated SH-SY5Y and PC12 cells, followed by L3. L6 most potently decreased IL-6 expression in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages. When L1 (weakest in vitro), L3, and L6 were orally administered in mice with PcM-induced depression, L6 most potently suppressed depression-like behaviors and hippocampal TNF-α and IL-6 expression and increased hippocampal serotonin, BDNF, 5HT7, GABAARα1, and GABABR1b expression, followed by L3 and L1. L6 also suppressed TNF-α and IL-6 expression in the colon. BDNF or serotonin levels in corticosterone-stimulated neuronal cells were negatively correlated with depression-related biomarkers in PcM-transplanted mice, while IL-6 levels in LPS-stimulated macrophage were positively correlated. These findings suggest that IL-6 expression-suppressing and BDNF/serotonin expression-inducing LBPs in vitro, particularly L6, may alleviate gut microbiota-involved depression with colitis in vivo.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the factors that influence the 'Overall Satisfaction' and 'Intention to Recommend' of medical institutions used using the Korea Medical Service Experience Survey (2019-2021). DATA SOURCES: This study used the data of Medical Service Experience Survey in Korea. The data collected for data analysis were from 2019 to 2021 (Medical service period: 2018.07.01. ~ 2021.06.30). STUDY DESIGN: The 2019 Medical Service Experience Survey was conducted from July 8 to September 20, 2019, and a total of 12,507 people (Medical service period: 2018.07.01. ~ 2019.06.30) were collected. The 2020 survey was conducted from July 13 to October 9, 2020, and a total of 12,133 people (Medical service period: 2019.07.01 ~ 2020.06.30.) were collected. The 2021 survey was conducted from July 19 to September 17, 2021), and a total of 13,547 people were collected (Medical service period: 2020.07.01. ~ 2021.06.30). Overall satisfaction and recommendation intentions for medical institutions consist of a Likert 5-point scale. At this time, the Top-box rating model used in the United States was applied. DATA COLLECTIONS/EXTRACTION METHODS: In this study, only those who used inpatient services (15 years of age or older) were included because they spent a long time in a medical institution and had an intensive experience, and a total of 1,105 subjects were included in the analysis. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Self-rated health and the type of bed influenced overall satisfaction with medical institutions. In addition, the type of economic activity, living area, self-rated health, the type of bed, and the type of nursing service affected the intention to recommend. And it was confirmed that overall satisfaction with medical institutions and intention to recommend them were higher in the 2021 survey than in 2019. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that government policy on resources and systems is important. Through the case of Korea, it was found that the policy of reducing multi-person beds and expansion of integrated nursing service had a significant impact on patients' experience of using medical institutions and improving the quality of care.

ABSTRACT

Dysregulation of the adipo-osteogenic differentiation balance of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which are common progenitor cells of adipocytes and osteoblasts, has been associated with many pathophysiologic diseases, such as obesity, osteopenia, and osteoporosis. Growing evidence suggests that lipid metabolism is crucial for maintaining stem cell homeostasis and cell differentiation; however, the detailed underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that glucosylceramide (GlcCer) and its synthase, glucosylceramide synthase (GCS), are key determinants of MSC differentiation into adipocytes or osteoblasts. GCS expression was increased during adipogenesis and decreased during osteogenesis. Targeting GCS using RNA interference or a chemical inhibitor enhanced osteogenesis and inhibited adipogenesis by controlling the transcriptional activity of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ). Treatment with GlcCer sufficiently rescued adipogenesis and inhibited osteogenesis in GCS knockdown MSCs. Mechanistically, GlcCer interacted directly with PPARγ through A/B domain and synergistically enhanced rosiglitazone-induced PPARγ activation without changing PPARγ expression, thereby treatment with exogenous GlcCer increased adipogenesis and inhibited osteogenesis. Animal studies demonstrated that inhibiting GCS reduced adipocyte formation in white adipose tissues under normal chow diet and high-fat diet feeding and accelerated bone repair in a calvarial defect model. Taken together, our findings identify a novel lipid metabolic regulator for the control of MSC differentiation and may have important therapeutic implications.

ABSTRACT

Obtaining a catalyst with high activity and thermal stability is essential for high-performance energy conversion devices operating at an elevated temperature. Herein, the design and fabrication of a heterogeneous catalyst with an ultrathin CeO2 overlayer via atomic layer deposition (ALD) on Pt electrodes for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs) is reported. The cell with a CeO2-overcoated (five ALD cycles) Pt cathode shows lower activation resistance by 50% after a 10 h operation and higher thermal stability by a factor of 2 compared with the cell with a Pt-only cathode, which is known to be the best single catalyst at 450 °C. Eventually, a thin-film SOFC with a highly active and stable CeO2-overcoated cathode based on an anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) substrate demonstrates a high peak power density of 800 mW cm-2 at 500 °C, which is the highest performance ever reported for an AAO-based SOFC at this temperature.

ABSTRACT

This study reports a hub-spoke type joint torque sensor involving strain gauges made of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). We developed the novel joint torque sensor for robots by means of MWCNT/epoxy strain sensors (0.8 wt%, gauge factor 2) to overcome the limits of conventional foil strain gauges. Solution mixing process was hired to fabricate a liquid strain sensor that can easily be installed on any complicated surfaces. We painted the MWCNT/epoxy mixing liquid on the hub-spoke type joint torque sensor to form the piezoresistive strain gauges. The painted sensor converted its strain into torque by mean of the installed hub-spoke structure after signal processing. We acquired sufficient torque voltage responses from the painted MWCNT/epoxy strain sensor.

ABSTRACT

Atomic layer-deposited (ALD) dielectric films on graphene usually show noncontinuous and rough morphology owing to the inert surface of graphene. Here, we demonstrate the deposition of thin and uniform ALD ZrO2 films with no seed layer on chemical vapor-deposited graphene functionalized by atmospheric oxygen plasma treatment. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the ALD ZrO2 films were highly crystalline, despite a low ALD temperature of 150 °C. The ALD ZrO2 film served as an effective passivation layer for graphene, which was shown by negative shifts in the Dirac voltage and the enhanced air stability of graphene field-effect transistors after ALD of ZrO2. The ALD ZrO2 film on the functionalized graphene may find use in flexible graphene electronics and biosensors owing to its low process temperature and its capacity to improve device performance and stability.

ABSTRACT

This paper introduces statistics related to the size and composition of Korea's total health expenditure. The figures produced were tailored to the OECD's system of health accounts. Korea's total health expenditure in 2009 was estimated at 73.7 trillion won (US$ 57.7 billion). The annual per capita health expenditure was equivalent to US$ PPP 1,879. Korea's total health expenditure as a share of gross domestic product was 6.9% in 2009, far below the OECD average of 9.5%. Korea's public financing share of total health expenditure increased rapidly from less than 50% before 2000 to 58.2% in 2009. However, despite this growth, Korea's share remained the fourth lowest among OECD countries that had an average public share of 71.5%. Inpatient, outpatient, and pharmaceutical care accounted for 32.1%, 33.0%, and 23.7% of current health expenditure in 2009, respectively. A total of 41.1% of current health expenditure went to hospitals, 28.1% to providers of ambulatory healthcare (15.9% on doctor's clinics), and 17.9% to pharmacies. More investment in the translation of national health account data into policy-relevant information is suggested for future progress.
