ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the radiological and clinical characteristics of benign adenomyoepitheliomas of the breast. Materials and Methods: Over the last 20 years, 120 patients were histologically diagnosed with breast adenomyoepithelioma (AME) at our institution. We excluded 43 patients who were incidentally diagnosed during mastectomy for breast cancer, 28 who underwent percutaneous biopsy without further excision, and 8 who had biopsy-confirmed benign AME and were found to have another pathology after complete excision. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records and radiological findings of the remaining 41 patients with histologically diagnosed benign breast AMEs after complete excision. Results: All 41 patients underwent US; 38 underwent mammography (MG) and US; and 18 underwent MG, US, and MRI. MG detected 38 cases with a round or oval shape (56%), and mass (89%), were non-circumscribed (62%), hyperdense (53%), and without microcalcifications (95%). Breast US revealed suspicious masses (98%) with a non-circumscribed margin (66%), hypoechogenicity (43%), and intratumoral vascularity (63%). All lesions on breast MRI showed suspicious masses (100%) with ill-defined margins (61%), and 84% showed wash-out kinetics. Benign AMEs showed suspicious features of Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) category 4 or 5 in 83%-95% of the MG, US, and MRI. Sixteen of the 41 cases were misdiagnosed on the initial core needle biopsy and two were diagnosed as malignancy. Conclusion: Benign breast AME often shows suspicious radiological features mimicking a malignant mass on MG, US, and MRI. Differentiating benign AME from other pathologies might be difficult on core needle biopsy, and complete excision is needed for a correct diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Although the typical CT findings of Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PJP) include diffuse or multifocal areas of ground-glass opacities in both lungs, it can also rarely manifest as multiple pulmonary nodules. We report a rare case of atypical PJP in an immunocompromised patient with multiple myeloma, presenting as widespread ground-glass opacities and multiple necrotic subpleural nodules in both lungs on CT, which proved to be granulomatous PJP on percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, extensive research has been undertaken to develop fiber-shaped optoelectronic devices, because they are aesthetically pleasing, light in weight, and exhibit superior light emitting properties when compared with conventional planar analogues. In this work, we have successfully developed hollow-fiber shaped organic light emitting diodes (HF-OLED) with an exceptionally high luminance and facile color tunability. The HF-OLED device was fabricated by hierarchically depositing amorphous indium-doped tin oxide electrode on a hollow-fiber, followed by the sequential deposition of light-emitting organic layers and Al cathode. The external quantum efficiency of the HF-OLED is more than ∼2.0 times higher than that of a planar-OLED. The experimental results are in good agreement with the output of optical simulations, revealing that the use of a hollow-fiber has contributed to a ∼2.3 times improvement in light extraction efficiency. Furthermore, the color emission of a single HF-OLED device could be easily tuned from a green to yellowish-green wavelength after the injection of a super-yellow solution. The novel color tunable nature of the HF-OLED further broadens its application in the field of modern lighting and display technology.

Ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA) are predominantly found and closely linked with geochemical cycling of nitrogen in non-extreme habitats. However, these strains have mainly been investigated using liquid cultures of enriched cells. Here, we provide an agar stab as a simple and reliable means of cultivating and maintaining AOA.

ABSTRACT

Bacteria can be engineered to deliver anticancer proteins to tumors via a controlled expression system that maximizes the concentration of the therapeutic agent in the tumor. L-asparaginase (L-ASNase), which primarily converts asparagine to aspartate, is an anticancer protein used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In this study, Salmonellae were engineered to express L-ASNase selectively within tumor tissues using the inducible araBAD promoter system of Escherichia coli. Antitumor efficacy of the engineered bacteria was demonstrated in vivo in solid malignancies. This result demonstrates the merit of bacteria as cancer drug delivery vehicles to administer cancer-starving proteins such as L-ASNase to be effective selectively within the microenvironment of cancer tissue.

ABSTRACT

In this work, the Co film was deposited by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on TaN(x)/SiO2/Si substrate at various NH3/H2 gas flow ratio (0, 0.08, 0.11, 0.17, 0.2) to form the continuous layer. It was found that Co film can achieve a low resistivity of 63 microomega-cm, high nucleation density, and a low root-mean-square roughness of 0.79 nm at 0.17 of NH3/H2 gas flow ratio. Moreover, by using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis, the effect of NH3 gas was confirmed as a reaction catalyst.
