ABSTRACT

We demonstrate a polarization-managed 8-dimensional modulation format that is time domain coded to reduce inter-channel nonlinearity. Simulation results show a 2.3 dB improvement in maximum net system margin (NSM) relative to polarization multiplexed (PM)-BPSK, and a 1.0 dB improvement relative to time interleaved return-to-zero (RZ)-PM-BPSK, for five WDM channels propagating over 1600 km ELEAF with 90% inline optical dispersion compensation. In contrast to the other modulations considered, the new 8-dimensional format has negligible sensitivity to the polarization states of the neighboring WDM channels. High-density WDM (HD-WDM) measurements on a 5000 km dispersion-managed link show a 1.0 dB improvement in net system margin relative to PM-BPSK.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to show the longitudinal use of routinely collected clinical data from history and ultrasound evaluation of the endometrium in developing an algorithm to predict the risk of endometrial carcinoma for postmenopausal women presenting with vaginal bleeding. METHODS: This prospective study collected data from 3047 women presenting with postmenopausal bleeding. Data regarding the presence of risk factors for endometrial cancer was collected and univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. RESULTS: Age distribution ranged from 35 to 97 years with a median of 59 years. A total of 149 women (5% of total) were diagnosed with endometrial carcinoma. Women in the endometrial cancer group were significantly more likely to be older, have higher BMI, recurrent episodes of bleeding, diabetes, hypertension, or a previous history of breast cancer. An investigator best model selection approach was used to select the best predictors of cancer, and using logistic regression analysis we created a model, 'Norwich DEFAB', which is a clinical prediction rule for endometrial cancer. The calculated Norwich DEFAB score can vary from a value of 0 to 9. A Norwich DEFAB value equal to or greater than 3 has a positive predictive value (PPV) of 7.78% and negative predictive value (NPV) of 98.2%, whereas a score equal to or greater than 5 has a PPV of 11.9% and NPV of 97.8%. CONCLUSION: The combination of clinical information with our investigation tool for women with postmenopausal vaginal bleeding allows the clinician to calculate a predicted risk of endometrial malignancy and prioritise subsequent clinical investigations.

ABSTRACT

Using longer wavelength laser drivers for high harmonic generation is desirable because the highest extreme ultraviolet frequency scales as the square of the wavelength. Recent numerical studies predict that high harmonic efficiency falls dramatically with increasing wavelength, with a very unfavorable lambda(-(5-6)) scaling. We performed an experimental study of the high harmonic yield over a wavelength range of 800-1850 nm. A thin gas jet was employed to minimize phase matching effects, and the laser intensity and focal spot size were kept constant as the wavelength was changed. Ion yield was simultaneously measured so that the total number of emitting atoms was known. We found that the scaling at constant laser intensity is lambda(-6.3+/-1.1) in Xe and lambda(-6.5+/-1.1) in Kr over the wavelength range of 800-1850 nm, somewhat worse than the theoretical predictions.

ABSTRACT

Tunneling, one of the most striking manifestations of quantum mechanics, influences the electronic structure of many molecules and solids and is responsible for radioactive decay. Much of the interaction of intense light pulses with matter commences with electrons tunneling from atoms or molecules to the continuum. Until recently, this starting point was assumed to be the highest occupied orbital of a given system. We have now observed tunneling from a lower-lying state in hydrogen chloride (HCl). Analyzing two independent experimental observables allowed us to isolate (via fragment ions), identify (via molecular frame photoelectron angular distributions), and, with the help of ab initio simulations, quantify the contribution of lower-lying orbitals to the total and angle-dependent tunneling current of the molecule. Our results bolster the emerging tenet that the coherent interaction between different orbitals--which can amplify the impact of lower orbitals--must be considered in tunneling processes.

ABSTRACT

We have examined the mechanism of transformation of a line of immortalized hamster dermal fibroblasts (4DH2 cells) following treatment with the simple alkylating agents, N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU), N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) and dimethyl sulphate (DMS). Treatment of 4DH2 cells with the potent point mutagens MNU and ENU gave rise to a spectrum of foci of different sizes, including progressively growing large foci and compact small foci. In contrast, treatment with the weak point mutagen DMS produced mostly large foci. The ability of cell lines derived from morphologically transformed foci to grow in soft agar in general reflects their original size. Thus most cell lines derived from large foci grew in soft agar while most lines derived from small foci did not. Transfection of cellular DNAs into the parent 4DH2 cell line and into NIH3T3 mouse fibroblasts has revealed the presence of dominantly acting transforming genes in the chemically transformed cell lines. Thus DNA from five of six cell lines derived by culturing large foci and from one of three cell lines derived by culturing small foci induced efficient morphological transformation of the recipient cells. Southern analyses of DNA from primary and secondary transfectants showed that several of the transforming genes transferred in these experiments were not closely related to H-ras, K-ras or N-ras.
