ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Globally, the oldest-old population is growing rapidly. Little is known about the perceived well-being of the community-dwelling oldest-old, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examined the oldest-old's perceptions of aging well and the COVID-related impacts on them. METHODS: Semi-structured in-depth interviews with 22 adults aged 85 or above were conducted with purposive sampling methods. Transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four main themes emerged: 1) sustaining functional ability; 2) staying active with a positive attitude; 3) feeling grateful for support from society and family; 4) COVID-19-related anxieties and policies destabilizing their well-being. DISCUSSION: This study provides direct evidence from the oldest-old on how they maintained their well-being. While they valued support from society and family, COVID-19-related measures disturbed their routines and prevented them from self-attaining well-being. The findings should be considered when developing interventions for this vulnerable group.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of the study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of a group of frail and/or pre-frail older nursing home residents in relation to horticultural therapy. METHOD: A total of 22 frail/pre-frail residents were interviewed. A qualitative content analysis approach was adopted to interpret the data from four nursing homes. RESULTS: Four main themes were identified: (a) "Horticultural therapy is an enjoyable activity and a good pastime in nursing home life"; (b) "Joining the programme made me happier"; (c) "Horticultural activities facilitated socialization among the residents"; and (4) "Not much mention was made of the programme by the staff outside the sessions." CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE: The findings provide evidence of the positive effects of horticultural therapy on perceived well-being among frail nursing home residents and expand the existing state of knowledge on the use of horticultural therapy in long-term residential care. Among others nursing implications, they are also important to develop appropriate and meaningful nursing practice to improve frail residents' perceived quality of life in the institution they now call "home."

ABSTRACT

Frailty is a common and vulnerable state in older people, which leads to a higher risk of adverse health outcomes. This cross-sectional study examined the association between frailty and its phenotypic components with the Mediterranean diet, life-space, and social participation in community-dwelling older people. 263 community-dwelling older people recruited from three community centers in Hong Kong completed the study (robust = 85, pre-frail = 120, frail = 58). The results showed that the Mediterranean diet (OR = 0.29), life-space (OR = 0.32), and social participation (OR = 0.31) were associated with frailty. All factors were preferentially associated with slowness. The Mediterranean diet and social participation were additionally associated with weakness and low activity, respectively. To reduce the risk of frailty among diverse populations of older people in community settings, eliminating foods considered detrimental in the Mediterranean diet is advocated. Older people's satisfaction with social participation should be taken into consideration. Environmental designs should accommodate slow-walking older people to maximize their life-space.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Frail nursing home residents face multiple health challenges as a result of their frail status. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of HT on the psychosocial well-being of frail and prefrail nursing home residents. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Nursing homes. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred eleven participants were randomly allocated into the intervention [horticultural therapy (HT)] and control (social activities) conditions. INTERVENTION: HT group participants attended a weekly 60-minute session for 8 consecutive weeks. Control group activities were social in nature, without any horticulture components. MEASUREMENTS: The outcome measures include happiness, depressive symptoms, self-efficacy, well-being, social network, and social engagement. The time points of measurement were at baseline (T0), immediately postintervention (T1), and 12 weeks postintervention (T2). A modified intention-to-treat approach was adopted. A multivariate general estimating equation was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Forty-six and 50 participants received at least 1 session of the intervention and control condition protocol, respectively. A significant interaction effect between group and time was observed only on the happiness scale (ß = 1.457, P = .036), but not on other outcome variables. In a follow-up cluster analysis of those who received HT, a greater effect on subjective happiness (mean difference = 6.23, P < .001) was observed for participants who were happier at baseline. CONCLUSION: HT was found to be effective in promoting subjective happiness for frail and prefrail nursing home residents. Its favorable effect suggests that HT should be used to promote the psychosocial well-being of those who are frail.

ABSTRACT

Pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) is an indicator of resistance to blood flow through the lungs and when measured at high altitude is a reliable predictor of susceptibility of an animal to brisket disease, a noninfectious cardiac pulmonary condition. (Co)-variance components for PAP, birth weight, and adjusted 205-d weaning weight were estimated from 2,305 spring-born, registered Angus cattle from a Colorado ranch at an elevation of 1,981 m. A single measure of PAP was collected after weaning on animals born from 1984 to 2003. The same licensed veterinarian measured every animal. Multitrait animal models with and without PAP maternal effects were fitted for a pedigree including 132 sires and 793 dams. The interaction of year x sex was a significant fixed effect (P <0.05) for PAP, but age of dam was not. Age at PAP testing was a significant (P <0.1) linear covariate for PAP, and scores increased 0.012 +/- 0.007 mmHg X d(-1) of age. Heritability of PAP direct was 0.34 +/- 0.05. Maternal heritability converged to a boundary at 0.0, and the model with maternal genetic effects for PAP was not significantly better than a model with only direct effects. Phenotypically, PAP was uncorrelated with birth or weaning weights. Genetically, PAP appeared to have positive, unfavorable relationships with direct effects for birth (0.49 +/- 0.12) and weaning weight (0.50 +/- 0.18). Positive correlations imply sires whose offspring exhibited resistance to brisket disease had lower weights and gains. A model that evaluated PAP in females and males as different traits had heritability estimates for each sex of 0.38 +/- 0.07 and 0.46 +/- 0.09, respectively, with a genetic correlation of 0.64 +/- 0.12 between the sexes and was not significantly better than the model assuming homogeneity by sex and a unit genetic correlation between sexes. The results suggest that PAP is moderately heritable in spring-born Angus cattle acclimatized and tested at high altitude, and selection for low PAP scores would be effective. Selection for growth at low altitude will produce cattle less suited to high altitude.

Sequence polymorphisms in the growth hormone (GH) gene and its transcriptional regulators, Pit-1 and Prop-1, were evaluated for associations with growth and carcass traits in two populations of Brangus bulls Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC, N = 248 from 14 sires) and a cooperating breeding program (COOP, N = 186 from 34 sires). Polymorphisms were SNP mutations in intron 4 (C/T) and exon V (C/G) in GH, A/G in exon VI in Pit-1, and A/G in exon III in Prop-1. In the COOP population, bulls of Pit-1 GG genotype had a significantly greater percentage of intramuscular fat than bulls of the AA or AG genotype, and bulls of the Prop-1 AA genotype had significantly greater scrotal circumference than bulls of AG or GG genotypes at ~365 days of age. Also, heterozygous genotypes for the two GH polymorphisms appeared advantageous for traits of muscularity and adiposity in the COOP population. The heterozygous genotype of GH intron 4 SNP was associated with advantages in weight gain, scrotal circumference, and fat thickness in the CDRRC population. The two GH polymorphisms accounted for >/=27.7% of the variation in these traits in the CDRRC population; however, R(2) was <5% in the COOP population. Based on haplotype analyses the two GH SNPs appeared to be in phase; the haplotype analyses also paralleled with the genotype analyses. Polymorphisms in GH and its transcriptional regulators appear to be predictors of growth and carcass traits in Brangus bulls, particularly those with heterozygous GH genotypes.

ABSTRACT

Two studies evaluated hormonal markers as indicators of the onset of puberty in Debouillet sheep selected for twinning. In Trial 1, 29 ewe lambs (50 +/- 0.5 kg, 159 to 187 d of age) were given 10 microg GnRH (i.v.) on September 15 and blood was collected at 30 min intervals after the injection for 2 h. Additional samples were taken twice weekly and progesterone (P4) was measured. The day that serum P4 was greater than 1 ng/mL for 2 consecutive sampling days was classified as the day of puberty. Average day of puberty was October 12 (average age at puberty was 199 d) and ewes with values less or greater than the average were classified as early or late, respectively. Average weight at GnRH challenge was 50 kg and ewes weighing less or more were classified as light or heavy, respectively. Early ewes weighed more (P = 0.01) and reached puberty sooner (P = 0.01) than late ewes. Heavy lambs reached puberty earlier, weighed more at GnRH challenge, and had more LH area under the curve (AUC, P < 0.05) than light ewes. In Trial 2, we gave 27 ewe lambs (54 +/- 0.9 kg, 173 to 189 d of age) a single i.v. injection of 10 microg GnRH and 10 microg GHRH on September 17. Average day of puberty was October 13, average weight was 54 kg, and average age at puberty was 208 d. Categories were designated as described for Trial 1. Early lambs reached puberty sooner (P = 0.01) and weighed more (P = 0.01) than late lambs, but the puberty groups had similar LH AUC (P = 0.64) and GH AUC (P = 0.75), whereas IGF-I was greater (P = 0.01) in early puberty ewes than in late puberty ewes. Heavy lambs reached puberty earlier (P = 0.06), weighed more (P = 0.01), and tended (P = 0.11) to have more GH AUC than light ewes. No difference was observed in LH AUC or IGF-I between weight groups (P > 0.15). Results suggest that serum LH after GnRH is not a reliable indicator of the onset of puberty in ewe lambs selected for twinning, but heavier ewes tended to produce more GH after a GHRH challenge and reach puberty earlier than lighter ewe lambs.
