ABSTRACT

The effects of bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are still not well understood. The aim of this study was to compare the morphological differences among unaffected subjects on the one hand, and patients with facial asymmetry before and after BSSRO on the other. Ten Chinese patients (preoperative and postoperative groups, mean (SD) age 25 (5) years) diagnosed with facial asymmetry and 10 unaffected subjects (control group, mean (SD) age 27 (5) years) were recruited prospectively. The 3-dimensional morphological measurements made on 3-dimensional models in each group were assessed by analysis-of-variance (ANOVA) and Student's t test, and probabilities of <0.05 were accepted as significant. The horizontal condylar angle (HCA), coronal condylar angle (CCA), sagittal ramus angle (SRA), medial joint space (MJS), lateral joint space (LJS), and superior joint space (SJS) differed significantly between the preoperative and control groups (HCA: p=0.000, CCA: p=0.000, SRA(left/undeviated side): p=0.002, MJS(left/undeviated side): p=0.000, MJS(right/deviated side): p=0.007, LJS(right/deviated side): p=0.000, SJS(left/undeviated side): p=0.000, SJS(right/deviated side): p=0.000). The SRA, MJS, LJS, and SJS differed significantly between the preoperative and postoperative groups (SRA(left/undeviated side): p=0.012, MJS(left/undeviated side): p=0.002, LJS(right/deviated side): p=0.021, SJS(left/undeviated side): p=0.000, SJS(right/deviated side): p=0.001), And the SRA, MJS, and LJS in the preoperative group differed significantly between the deviated and undeviated side (SRA: p=0.006; MJS: p=0.003; LJS: p=0.011). However, there were no significant differences in the postoperative and control groups between the deviated and undeviated sides. BSSRO improved the asymmetrical morphology of the TMJ and alleviated the symptoms.

ABSTRACT

The molecular mechanism of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is poorly understood and effective therapeutic approaches are needed. This research aimed to excavate the attractor modules involved in the progression of NPC and provide further understanding of the underlying mechanism of NPC. Based on the gene expression data of NPC, two specific protein-protein interaction networks for NPC and control conditions were re-weighted using Pearson correlation coefficient. Then, a systematic tracking of candidate modules was conducted on the re-weighted networks via cliques algorithm, and a total of 19 and 38 modules were separately identified from NPC and control networks, respectively. Among them, 8 pairs of modules with similar gene composition were selected, and 2 attractor modules were identified via the attract method. Functional analysis indicated that these two attractor modules participate in one common bioprocess of cell division. Based on the strategy of integrating systemic module inference with the attract method, we successfully identified 2 attractor modules. These attractor modules might play important roles in the molecular pathogenesis of NPC via affecting the bioprocess of cell division in a conjunct way. Further research is needed to explore the correlations between cell division and NPC.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of blastocyst quality on the strategy of single blastocyst transfer in frozen-thawed cycles. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed in Reproductive Medicine Center, Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on clinical data of single frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer cycles from January 2008 to December 2013. All cycles were divided into four groups (AA, AB/BA, BB, BC/CB) according to the blastocyst score, then the clinical outcomes were compared between groups. And on this basis, the clinical outcomes were further explored when the group of outcomes with single blastocyst transfer wasn't ideal, which would diverted to transfer two blastocyst. RESULTS: In single frozen blastocyst transfer cycles, the clinical pregnancy rate of each group with the blastocyst scored AA, AB/BA, BB, BC/CB were 61.4% (470/765), 51.2% (330/645), 40.5% (407/1 005), 22.9% (60/262), live births rate in each group were 52.2% (399/765), 41.2% (266/645), 30.4% (306/1 005), 13.7% (36/262), and the abortion rate were 13.6% (64/470), 16.7% (55/330), 21.4% (87/407), 35.0%(21/60), separately. This showed that the clinical pregnancy rate and live births rate decreased significantly with the decline of blastocyst quality (P<0.01), but the abortion rate showed significant upward trend (P<0.01). When single blastocyst scored ≥BB grade transferred, an acceptable clinical pregnancy rate (>40%) and live births rate (>30%) could be obtained, however, the clinical pregnancy rate of 22.9% and live births rate of 13.7% could only be acquired when blastocyst scored BC/CB only transferred one embryo, which significant lower than those of each group scored ≥BB grade (P<0.01). So, after that, the blastocyst scored BC/CB were further divided into two groups (single blastocyst transferred versus two blastocyst transferred) to investigate, then the result showed that the clinical pregnancy rate [22.9% versus 38.5%(67/174),P<0.01] and live births rate [13.7% versus 30.5%(16/67),P<0.01] were significantly increased in the group of two blastocyst transferred compared with the group of one blastocyst transferred, and the abortion rate was also significantly decreased from 35.0% to 17.9% (12/67;P<0.05). So when two blastocyst scored BC/CB were transferred, the clinical outcomes were similar to the group of one blastocyst scored BB transferred (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Of single blastocyst transfer in frozen-thawed cycles, the clinical pregnancy rate and liver births rate showed significant upward trend, but the abortion rate showed significant downward trend, with the decline of blastocyst quality. When the blastocyst scored ≥BB grade, the single blastocyst transfer could be considered to be performed.

ABSTRACT

POU1F1 is a positive regulator for prolactin (PRL) whose metabolites may directly or indirectly affect some aspects of the hair growth cycle, therefore, POU1F1 gene is an important candidate gene for cashmere traits selection through marker-assisted selection (MAS). Hence, in this study, the PCR-RFLP method was applied to detect a T>C transition determining a PstI polymorphism at the 3'UTR of POU1F1 locus and evaluate its associations with cashmere traits in 847 Inner Mongolia White Cashmere goats. In the analyzed population, the allelic frequencies for the T and C alleles are 0.959 and 0.041, respectively and the genotypic frequencies are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P > 0.05). Moreover, significant statistical relationships between the PstI polymorphism of POU1F1 gene and goat cashmere yields were found (*P < 0.05). When compared with TC genotype, TT genotype was associated with superior cashmere yields in 2, 4, and 5 years old individuals, as well as with average cashmere yield. Hence, TT genotype is suggested to be a molecular marker for senior cashmere yield.

ABSTRACT

Chronic food restriction (FR), which retards many aging processes, enhances the endogenous diurnal peak of plasma total corticosterone (B) in young rats. Although the FR-dependent enhancement of total B disappears in aged rats, increased levels of the bioavailable fraction, free B, appear to be maintained. In young rats, we previously found that the FR-induced increase in the diurnal peak of total B is associated with increased adrenal response to corticotropin, also known as adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Here we show that the FR-enhanced adrenal response of total B to ACTH disappears with age but that the enhanced response of free B is maintained. We measured the endogenous diurnal peak and the response to ACTH of total and free B in 10-, 16-, and 22-month-old ad-libitum fed and FR male Fischer 344 rats in the afternoon, when plasma B peaks. At 10 and 16 months, FR rats showed enhanced total plasma B responses to ACTH relative to ad-libitum fed rats, but not at 22 months. By contrast, the response of free B to ACTH was enhanced by FR at all ages. The effect of FR on patterns of endogenous total and free diurnal B in these three age groups paralleled the ACTH-response data. The enhanced adrenocortical response of FR rats to ACTH does not reflect an increased expression of ACTH-receptor (ACTH-R) mRNA, because ACTH-R mRNA/microg adrenal RNA and ACTH-R mRNA/mg adrenal weight did not differ between ad-libitum fed and FR rats at any age.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the approach of setting an occupational exposure limit for phosphamidon, an organophosphorus pesticide, in the workplace in China. Apart from a general review of the literature relating to various toxicological studies, special emphasis has been placed on the results of a systematic occupational health survey on the workers exposed to phosphamidon. As a result of the survey, together with the literature review, a 'maximum allowable concentration' (MAC) for phosphamidon in the air of workplace is suggested as 0.02 mg m-3 but on the condition that the route of skin entry be blocked effectively. In addition, based on the description of the standard-setting process in China, a comparison has been made to the current U.K. approach.
