ABSTRACT

The effectiveness of almond shell-derived biochar (ASB) in immobilizing soil heavy metals (HMs) and its impact on soil microbial activity and diversity have not been sufficiently studied. Hence, a pot study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of ASB addition at 2, 4, and 6 % (w/w) on soil biochemical characteristics and the bioavailability of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants, as compared to the control (contaminated soil without ASB addition). The addition of ASB promoted plant growth (up to two-fold) and restored the damage to the ultrastructure of chloroplast organelles. In addition, ASB mitigated the adverse effects of HMs toxicity by decreasing oxidative damage, regulating the antioxidant system, improving soil physicochemical properties, and enhancing enzymatic activities. At the phylum level, ASB addition enhanced the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Acidobacteriota, and Firmicutes while decreasing the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota. Furthermore, ASB application increased the relative abundance of several fungal taxa (Ascomycota and Mortierellomycota) while reducing the relative abundance of Basidiomycota in the soil. The ASB-induced improvement in soil properties, microbial community, and diversity led to a significant decrease in the DTPA-extractable HMs down to 41.0 %, 51.0 %, 52.0 %, and 35.0 % for Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn, respectively, as compared to the control. The highest doses of ASB (ASB6) significantly reduced the metals content by 26.0 % for Cd, 78.0 % for Cu, 38.0 % for Pb, and 20.0 % for Zn in the roots, and 72.0 % for Cd, 67.0 % for Cu, 46.0 % for Pb, and 35.0 % for Zn in the shoots, as compared to the control. The structural equation model predicts that soil pH and organic matter are driving factors in reducing the availability and uptake of HMs. ASB could be used as a sustainable trial for remediation of HMs polluted soils and reducing metal content in edible plants.

ABSTRACT

Recent years have seen a burgeoning interest in the involvement of corporate sustainability (CS) in sustainable development (SD), yet both concepts are fewer and newer in the academic field. This study aims to present a thorough bibliometric analysis that provides fresh new insights on the subject. Using VOSviewer software, this study analyzed and visualized 1214 documents for the period 2005-2021 in the Web of Science (WoS) database. The findings of the study indicate that the co-theme CS and SD are lasting but thriving research subjects. The findings also revealed that authors from the USA published the highest number of articles followed by the UK, Spain, Italy, and Germany. The co-authorship network showed strong links between these countries. Three main clusters are identified based on research titles frequently co-cited and have significant co-citation connections. In general, this study provides valuable insight into the current status and future trends for research on SDGs. The outcome of the study could be useful to policymakers, regulators, sustainability practitioners, and researchers in understanding the key research areas, influential authors, institutions, and countries actively involved in the field. Considering the involvement of corporate sustainability in sustainable development is a useful and informative endeavor for all community actors. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study that presents the holistic picture of CS and SD-related research to identify the knowledge map between the two subjects.

ABSTRACT

The increasing interest in online shopping in recent years has increased the importance of understanding customer engagement valence (CEV) in a virtual service network. There is yet a comprehensive explanation of the CEV concept, particularly its impact on multi-actor networks such as web stores. Therefore, this study aims to fill this research gap. In this study, past literature in the marketing and consumer psychology field was critically reviewed to understand the concept of CEV in online shopping, and the propositional-based style was employed to conceptualize the CEV within the online shopping (web stores) context. The outcomes demonstrate that the valence of customer engagement is dependent on the cognitive interpretation of signals that are prompted by multiple actors on a web store service network. If the signals are positively interpreted, positive outcomes such as service co-creation are expected, but if they are negatively interpreted, negative outcomes such as service co-destruction are predicted. These notions create avenues for future empirical research and practical implications.
