ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Indoor air quality is an important concern for kindergartener because young children are more vulnerable to the effects of poor air quality. Poor indoor air quality can cause respiratory problems and other health issues, which can negatively affect a child's ability to learn and grow. Aim of this study is to determine the trend and status of indoor air pollutants in study areas by using descriptive statistics and cluster analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Air temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), air movement (AM), carbon dioxide (CO2), formaldehyde (HCHO), and particulate matter (PM) are the monitored parameters. Monitoring was carried out in the kindergarten for three consecutive days starting from 8.00am to 12.00pm. RESULTS: Indoor carbon dioxide readings were higher at 0800 when parents drove to kindergarten to drop off their children without turning off the engine. In addition to this, the PM10 reading at 1000 was high but still within the standard range according to ICOP-IAQ 2010. CONCLUSION: The findings highlight the importance of indoor air quality improvement measures for kindergarten buildings which can be used to improve indoor air quality in kindergarten environments.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC) has been used globally and translated to several languages, including Brazilian Portuguese, Italian and Persian. The aim of this study is to translate and validate ERC to the Malay language and to measure the reliability and validity of the translated version of this scale among Malaysian parents. METHODS: This study involved forward and back translation method. The translated questionnaire was then pretested and piloted among 10 parents and 50 participants, respectively. The procedure was repeated using the same questionnaire to evaluate the test-retest reliability. RESULTS: The ERC-Malay (ERC-M) has excellent qualitative and quantitative measurements in both item-level content validation index (I-CVI) and scale-level content validation index (S-CVI). In addition, the ERC-M demonstrated good internal consistency from Cronbach's alpha and test-retest reliability based on the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) in all domains. CONCLUSION: ERC-M can potentially be used as a tool to evaluate emotion for the population with emotional dysregulation issue, such as autism spectrum disorder.

ABSTRACT

Vascular dysregulation has long been recognized as an important pathophysiological factor underlying the development of glaucomatous neuropathy. Endothelin-1 (ET1) has been shown to be a key player due to its potent vasoconstrictive properties that result in retinal ischemia and oxidative stress leading to retinal ganglion cell (RGC) apoptosis and optic nerve (ON) damage. In this study we investigated the protective effects of magnesium acetyltaurate (MgAT) against retinal cell apoptosis and ON damage. MgAT was administered intravitreally prior to, along with or after administration of ET1. Seven days post-injection, animals were euthanized and retinae were subjected to morphometric analysis, TUNEL and caspase-3 staining. ON sections were stained with toluidine blue and were graded for neurodegenerative effects. Oxidative stress was also estimated in isolated retinae. Pre-treatment with MgAT significantly lowered ET1-induced retinal cell apoptosis as measured by retinal morphometry and TUNEL staining. This group of animals also showed significantly lesser caspase-3 activation and significantly reduced retinal oxidative stress compared to the animals that received intravitreal injection of only ET1. Additionally, the axonal degeneration in ON was markedly reduced in MgAT pretreated animals. The animals that received MgAT co- or post-treatment with ET1 also showed improvement in all parameters; however, the effects were not as significant as observed in MgAT pretreated animals. The current study showed that the intravitreal pre-treatment with MgAT reduces caspase-3 activation and prevents retinal cell apoptosis and axon loss in ON induced by ET1. This protective effect of ET1 was associated with reduced retinal oxidative stress.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether MR diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of the optic nerve and optic radiation in glaucoma patients provides parameters to discriminate between mild and severe glaucoma and to determine whether DTI derived indices correlate with retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness. METHODS: 3-Tesla DTI was performed on 90 subjects (30 normal, 30 mild glaucoma and 30 severe glaucoma subjects) and the FA and MD of the optic nerve and optic radiation were measured. The categorisation into mild and severe glaucoma was done using the Hodapp-Parrish-Anderson (HPA) classification. RNFL thickness was also assessed on all subjects using OCT. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and Spearman's correlation coefficient was carried out. RESULTS: FA and MD values in the optic nerve and optic radiation decreased and increased respectively as the disease progressed. FA at the optic nerve had the highest sensitivity (87%) and specificity (80%). FA values displayed the strongest correlation with RNFL thickness in the optic nerve (r=0.684, p ≤ 0.001) while MD at the optic radiation showed the weakest correlation with RNFL thickness (r=-0.360, p ≤ 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The high sensitivity and specificity of DTI-derived FA values in the optic nerve and the strong correlation between DTI-FA and RNFL thickness suggest that these parameters could serve as indicators of disease severity.

ABSTRACT

We reviewed five cases of ovarian pregnancy that were diagnosed at the Kandang Kerbau Hospital Histopathology Laboratory over three years. The clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of these patients are discussed in detail. This condition usually occurs in parous fertile women as evidenced by three of the five patients studied. It is probably an accidental event with no predisposing features as compared to the tubal pregnancy patient. The diagnosis has been aided by the recent advances in human chorionic gonadotrophin determination and ultrasound. Ultrasound, especially transvaginal ultrasound scanning has proven to be an invaluable tool in the diagnosis of this condition. Fertility after conservative surgical procedures does not appear to be affected and ovarian wedge resection or ovarian cystectomy is the treatment of choice.

ABSTRACT

A rare case of an unruptured ovarian ectopic pregnancy is reported. This patient had a dilatation and curettage for an incomplete abortion and no products of conception were revealed in the histology specimen. A repeat ultrasound scan detected an ectopic pregnancy. Laparotomy confirmed the diagnosis of an unruptured ovarian pregnancy. The problems with the diagnosis and the management of this case are discussed.

ABSTRACT

A retrospective study on the outcome of 130 consecutive patients with a previous lower segment Caesarean section who delivered in Kandang Kerbau Hospital, Singapore from January to June 1989 was performed. Seventy-six percent of these patients were selected for a trial of labour and 24% of the patients had a repeat (elective) Caesarean section. Vaginal delivery was achieved in 65% of patients chosen to undergo a trial of labour. A trial of labour was found to be relatively safe with only a 0.7% incidence of uterine dehiscence and a perinatal mortality of 10.1 per 1,000 births with no maternal mortality. Cephalopelvic disproportion in the previous pregnancy and cervical dilatation during the previous Caesarean section were not important prognostic factor for the subsequent pregnancy outcome. A previous vaginal delivery in patients who had a previous Caesarean section was a good prognostic factor for a subsequent successful vaginal delivery (p < 0.05) in the trial of labour. More vaginal deliveries (p < 0.05) were achieved when oxytocic infusion was used in selected cases during the trial of labour. Maternal morbidities were higher in patients who had a failed trial of labour (57%) and repeat elective Caesarean section (20%) than those who had a successful trial of labout (10%). Management of patients with a previous lower segment Caesarean section may present a dilemma, but if properly conducted, the outcome can be favourable.
