ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This report presents a series of cases representing variant origin and course of the ulnar artery, namely the superficial ulnar artery (SUA), observed during the review of collection of historical specimens prepared in the 19th century by the prominent Polish anatomist Ludwik Karol Teichmann and his collaborators, exhibited in the Anatomy Museum of Jagiellonian University Medical College. RESULTS: Three distinct variants of the SUA were found on anatomical specimens of the upper limb with arteries injected by using Teichmann's method. In case no. 1, the SUA originated from the brachial artery slightly above the interepicondylar line of the humerus. This aberrant vessel gave off the common interosseous artery in the upper half of the cubital fossa and then ran superficially to the bicipital aponeurosis and over the muscles arising from the medial epicondyle of the humerus. The cases no. 2 and 3 involved two similar variants of the superficial artery in which the common interosseous artery arose from the radial artery. In the unique case no. 4, the SUA arose from the radial artery. CONCLUSIONS: The SUA shows diverse anatomy regarding its topography and blood supply territory. Orthopaedic, hand, and plastic surgeons should be aware of anatomic variations of the SUA both in planning and in conducting surgeries of the upper limb.

ABSTRACT

Referring to a recent experiment, we theoretically study the process of a two-channel decay of the diatomic silver anion (Ag2 -), namely, the spontaneous electron ejection giving Ag2 + e- and the dissociation leading to Ag- + Ag. The ground state potential energy curves of the silver molecules of diatomic neutral and negative ions were calculated using proper pseudo-potentials and atomic basis sets. We also estimated the non-adiabatic electronic coupling between the ground state of Ag2 - and the ground state of Ag2 + e-, which, in turn, allowed us to estimate the minimal and mean values of the electron autodetachment lifetimes. The relative energies of the rovibrational levels allow the description of the spontaneous electron emission process, while the description of the rotational dissociation is treated with the quantum dynamics method as well as time-independent methods. The results of our calculations are verified by comparison with the experimental data.

ABSTRACT

Adiabatic potential energy curves of the 31Σ+, 33Σ+, 21Π and 23Π states correlating for large internuclear distance with the K(4s) + Li(2p) atomic asymptote were calculated. Very good agreement between the calculated and the experimental curve of the 21Π state allowed for a reliable description of the dissociation process through a small (∼20 cm-1 for J = 0) potential energy barrier. The barrier supports several rovibrational quasi-bound states and explicit time evolution of these states via the time-dependent nuclear Schrödinger equation, showed that the state populations decay exponentially in time. We were able to precisely describe the time-dependent dissociation process of several rovibrational levels and found that our calculated spectrum match very well with the assigned experimental spectrum. Moreover, our approach is able to predict the positions of previously unassigned lines, particularly in the case of their low intensity.

ABSTRACT

The adiabatic potential energy curves of the 1Σ+ and 1Π states of the LiH molecule were calculated. They correlate asymptotically to atomic states, such as 2s + 1s, 2p + 1s, 3s + 1s, 3p + 1s, 3d + 1s, 4s + 1s, 4p + 1s and 4d + 1s. A very good agreement was found between our calculated spectroscopic parameters and the experimental ones. The dynamics of the rotational predissociation process of the 11Π state were studied by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The classical experiment of Velasco [Can. J. Phys., 1957, 35, 1204] on dissociation in the 11Π state is explained for the first time in detail.

ABSTRACT

The studies comprised the preparation and preservation, by the method of spray-drying, of baker's vaccine composed of lactic acid bacteria. The selection of particular strains was conducted taking into consideration the fermentation activity and growth dynamics of Lactobacillus rods isolated from plant material. Mixed vaccine was composed of chosen monocultures, characterized by the highest acidifying activity (4 strains). Before the vaccine was preserved, it had been used for making bread leaven (of rye flour) whose activity and usefulness for rye bread production was then determined The vaccine was subjected to spray-drying. The survival rate of Lactobacillus rods was determined directly after drying and during storage. It was found that the parameters of spray-drying applied in the experiment caused a considerable reduction in the number of vaccine components--by 2 log on average.

ABSTRACT

With appropriate reimbursement, the prospective payment system (PPS) can provide the opportunity to provide care under Medicare the way it was meant to be: individualized, quality care, planned and coordinated to achieve optimum cost-effective outcomes based on individual patient need. This article explores how management and evaluation of a care plan and telephonic case management can be used in PPS.

ABSTRACT

Bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) of the whole skeleton were measured with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) using DPX-L bone densitometer (Lunar) in 240 caucasian subjects with food hypersensitivity, aged 2-18 years, fed milk-free diet (mean duration: 3.6 yrs). DEXA results were compared to the age and sex-matched reference population (n = 473) presenting normal consumption of milk and dairy products, Breast-feeding duration, social conditions and general physical activity did not differ in these groups. All subjects ranged between 3rd and 97th percentile for body weight and height and their nutritional status was similar in both groups, as assessed by means of anthropometric methods (BMI, skinfolds, midarm circumference). Mean values of total BMC and total BMD did not show significant differences between two groups of children, regarding to diet application. Although dietary calcium intake has a significant positive influence on the bone mineral content, our cross-sectional study suggests that the properly applied and controlled elimination diet should not disturb bone mass accumulation in children and adolescents with food allergy.

ABSTRACT

Eye movement disorders detected by oculography indicate abnormal function of specific brain areas involved in the motor control. Registration of conjugate eye movement can be very useful diagnostic tool to study neurodegenerative disorders of the brain. In some conditions oculographic registration may reveal eye movement abnormalities in subclinical stages of the disease.

ABSTRACT

Poisoning with ethylene glycol is the most frequent poisoning in our country. Acute encephalopathy during this poisoning may be a cause of important diagnostic difficulties, especially in the initial phase of the poisoning, due to the variety of symptoms and signs. Three cases of this poisoning are reported. All patients were erroneously referred and admitted to neurological hospital department. It is postulated that in each case of coma of unknown aetiology with signs suggesting damage to the brain stem and hyperventilation arterial blood gasometric examination should be done and blood and urine should be taken for toxicological investigations. In the treatment of glycol poisoning the most important task is to correct metabolic acidosis and to apply early dialysis treatment in serious intoxication.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of psychotic complications of levodopa treatment was assessed in 198 Parkinson patients. The symptoms were seen in 44 (22.2%). Those who developed complications were significantly older at disease onset (63.3 +/- 9.2 vs 57.6 +/- 11.6). The observed psychiatric symptoms were classified into two categories: simple, including incidents of confusion alone or hallucinations with preserved insight, and complex, including delusions or chronic confusion without preserved insight. Patients with complex symptoms were significantly younger at the onset of the disease, and the duration of the disease prior to these psychiatric symptoms was longer than in the group of patients with simple symptomatology. Patients with complex symptoms were more susceptible to another central side-effect of the treatment: dyskinesias, than those with simple.

ABSTRACT

198 patients with Parkinson's disease on long-term treatment with L-dopa were evaluated for the presence of dyskinesias and psychiatric side-effects of the treatment. Dyskinesias were present in 53% of the patients. In a majority of them they appeared already during the first 2 years of the treatment. Younger patients seemed more susceptible to develop dyskinesias. Hallucinations, confusion, or delusions were observed in 22.2% of the patients. Older patients seemed more susceptible to develop these side-effects of the treatment. It seems that parkinsonian patients with later and earlier onset of the disease have different type of neuronal lesion responsible for the central side-effects of L-dopa.

ABSTRACT

The possibility of the occurrence of goiter endemia++ among the inhabitants of Goldap community in the Suwalki voivodeship has been investigated. The investigations embraced 2488 persons, i.e. 21% of the population of the studied community. The occurrence of goiter was revealed in 38% of the investigated persons, and this observation lead to the conclusion that goiter is endemic among the population of the Goldap community. Such features as high incidence of thyroid enlargement of low degree (OB and I), higher incidence of goiter in women than in men, absence of cases with hypothyroidism, and low incidence of nodular goiter, characterize the observed endemia++ as mild.
