ABSTRACT

Konjac glucomannan (KGM), a dietary fiber hydrocolloid polysaccharide isolated from Amorphophallus konjac tubers, has potential applications in various fields. However, the use of KGM-based hydrogels has mainly focused on the food, biomedical, and water treatment industries. KGM possesses several health benefits and could be a promising candidate for use in edible electronics. This paper presents the first review of KGM-based hydrogels as edible electronics and their potential health benefits. The paper initially focuses on the health-promoting effects of KGM-based hydrogels, such as prebiotic effects, antiobesity, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. Then, it discusses the feasible design strategies for KGM-based hydrogels as edible electronics, considering their flexibility, mechanical properties, response to stimuli, degradability aspects, their role as electronic device components, and the retention period of the devices. Finally, this review outlines future directions for developing KGM-based hydrogels for use in edible electronics.

ABSTRACT

Pahae natural zeolite potentially can be used as a filtration material because of its high adsorption capacity. However, it is known that other supportive materials such as activated charcoal are needed to optimize the utilization of natural zeolite as an adsorber. This study aims to investigate the potential use of activated charcoal which was synthesized from cocoa shells waste and natural zeolite in nanosize as the adsorber in order to increase the concentration of bioethanol. The mixing process of nanozeolite and activated charcoal of cocoa shells was carried out through mechanical mixing, while the nanofilter was made using a press-printing technique followed by sintering at several temperature variations. The results showed that the activated zeolite produced in this study has a particle size of 118.4 nm with water absorption capacity of 52.08%. In line with that, the bioethanol concentration was increased up to 78.92% during the adsorption with a 45 min contact time with water vapor. Thus, based on the results, it can be concluded that nanosized zeolite-based adsorbents and activated charcoal produced from cocoa shells can be utilized as adsorbers to significantly increase the concentration of bioethanol generated.

ABSTRACT

The novel composite membranes of Styrofoam (polystyrene) integrated with natural zeolite particles were produced using the electrospinning method for desalination purposes. The product was then characterized using FTIR, XRD, and TGA. Subsequently, the effect of different zeolite concentrations, namely 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 wt.% on its morphological structure and effectiveness was determined. Desalination of artificial seawater was carried out using the gravitational filtration principle to confirm the membrane's capabilities, after which its performance was evaluated using 4 wt.% NaCl solution. The morphological analysis showed that the composite membrane obtained has a smooth surface with microdomains on a few parts, which indicates the presence of zeolite. The result showed that the product integrated with 30 wt.% zeolites had the best performance in the desalination of artificial seawater. This was determined by comparing the conductivity value of the seawater before and after the process. The conductivity led to an 82.63% decrease using 30 wt.% zeolites. The developed polystyrene membrane embedded with zeolite has good thermal stability, hence, it can be used for desalination.
