ABSTRACT

Mast cell tumors are one of the most common skin neoplasms that affect dogs. The diagnosis is based on clinical and laboratory aspects, with cytology and histopathology being the preferred methods. Therefore, this study aims to report the importance of the broad diagnostic approach of metastatic cutaneous mastocytoma in a castrated a female dog attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the State University of Ceará, with a neoformation in a member compatible with mast cell tumor. The patient's staging was performed through laboratory tests of complete blood count, aspiration cytology of regional lymph nodes and bone marrow, which showed the presence of focus of metastasis, as well as the abdominal ultrasound examination, which showed changes in the liver parenchymas and right medial iliac lymphadenopathy. Given the suspicions, the patient was euthanized and the body was sent for necropsy and histopathological examination, which confirmed the diagnosis of high-grade cutaneous mast cell tumor, with metastasis in the liver, lung, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. Thus, it can be is concluded that mast cell tumor is a neoplasm of multifactorial diagnosis, where hematological tests associated with cytology, histopathological, and imaging analyses are essential to establish the definitive diagnosis to determine a better therapeutic behavior and prognosis of canine patients.

ABSTRACT

Female canine mammary neoplasms (CMNs) are the most frequent neoplasm in bitches, and a variety of techniques have been used to identify they prognostic factors. Among the possibilities, the serum biomarkers cancer antigen (CA 15-3) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) are the most reliable. Neoplastic biomarkers are substances present in the neoplasia, blood, or other biological products, produced mainly by the neoplasia, or secondarily by the patient, in response to their presence. In veterinary medicine, these biomarkers are poorly studied. In general terms they cannot be used for primary diagnosis of mammary neoplasms but are related to the prognostic factors and have the advantage of being a less invasive analysis and that it is possible to be done in a serial way. The objective of this review is to describe CA 15-3 and CEA use as biomarkers in CMNs, the recent progress made in literature and the main overall results that had been already obtained. CA 15-3 and CEA have prognostic potential for CMNs. There is a wide variation of results for these biomarkers in literature, but despite this, its use must be considered as they provide relevant results in terms of characterization and prognostic in CMNs.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Gastrointestinal nematodes can affect piglet performance, causing diarrhea in the nursery phase, one of the major challenges faced in production. Therefore, parasitological monitoring is essential for the diagnosis of the degree of animal infection in order to take the right curative and preventive measures. Therefore, the objective was to analyze the feces of piglets with and without diarrhea in the pre-initial phase and their relationship with the presence of parasite eggs. The collections were carried out in a commercial pig farm, in which 40 animals were randomly chosen and divided equally into two groups, with and without diarrhea. The samples were analyzed by direct stool examination and the flotation method. Of the analyzed samples, all were negative for the group without diarrhea. However, animals with diarrhea had a prevalence of 10% and 5% regarding the presence of gastrointestinal parasites at direct and flotation method, respectively. Ascaris sp., Strongyloides sp., Cystoisosporasp. and Eimeria spp. were detected. Given the multifactorial origin of diarrhea in piglets in the post-weaning period, it is concluded that piglet diarrhea in the pre-initial phase is not only related to the presence of endoparasites, therefore, other possible causes must be studied so that there is a greater control of disorders enteric at this stage.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Canine babesiosis is a hemoparasitosis caused by a protozoan of the genus Babesia spp., that parasitize the erythrocytes of infected animals. This study aimed to analyze the hematological and epidemiological profile of dogs diagnosed with babesiosis, through visualization in blood smear of merozoites inside erythrocytes, in the city of Fortaleza/CE, for five years (2015 to 2019). During the period, 38 affected dogs were observed. The second half, the dry period, was the one with the highest number of cases (60.5%). A higher frequency was observed in male dogs (57.8%), mixed breed (57.8%) under one year of age (73.6%). The most frequent hematological changes were thrombocytopenia (86.8%) and anemia (81.5%). In these cases, it is suggested to include babesiosis as a differential diagnosis. Despite the low sensitivity, the search for hemoparasites in the blood smear can be used in the clinical routine.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of carvacryl acetate (CVA) and nanoencapsulated CVA (nCVA) on gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. The CVA was nanoencapsulated with chitosan/gum arabic and the efficacy of nanoencapsulation (EE), yield, zeta potential, nanoparticle morphology and release kinetics at pH 3 and 8 were analyzed. Acute and subchronic toxicity were evaluated in rodents and reduction of egg counts in the faeces (FECRT) of sheep. The sheep were divided into four groups (n = 10): G1, 250 mg/kg CVA; G2, 250 mg/kg nCVA; G3, polymer matrix and G4: 2.5 mg/kg monepantel. EE and nCVA yield were 65% and 57%, respectively. The morphology of the nanoparticles was spherical, size (810.6±286.7 nm), zeta potential in pH 3.2 (+18.3 mV) and the 50% release of CVA at pHs 3 and 8 occurred at 200 and 10 h, respectively. nCVA showed LD50 of 2,609 mg/kg. CVA, nCVA and monepantel reduced the number of eggs per gram of faeces (epg) by 57.7%, 51.1% and 97.7%, respectively. The epg of sheep treated with CVA and nCVA did not differ from the negative control (P>0.05). Nanoencapsulation reduced the toxicity of CVA; however, nCVA and CVA presented similar results in the FECRT.

ABSTRACT

The increase in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity is associated with hypoxia due to the rapid proliferation of cancer cells and high metabolic demands. Few studies have evaluated the LDH concentration in canine mammary tumor (CMT). Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate serum LDH concentrations in CMT and its association with prognostic factors. Thirty bitches participated in the work and were divided equally into two groups, with and without CMT. The average concentration of LDH was significantly higher in CMT (424.9±244.4U / L) compared to the control group (299.0±170.3 U / L) and its values were positively correlated with inflammation and / or macroscopic ulceration (r=0.6), tumor size (r=0.5), histopathological grade (r=0.6), metastatic lymph node (r=0.7) and clinical stage (r=0.5).

ABSTRACT

There is strong evidence that inflammation plays a key role in all stages of tumorigenesis. In human medicine, C-reactive protein (CRP) is frequently used in tests for neoplastic biomarkers, however, few studies are available on the serum concentration of CRP in cases of canine mammary tumors (CMT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum concentrations of CRP in bitches with CMT and its association with prognostic factors. Thirty bitches participated in the work, which were equally divided into two groups, with and without CMT. Bitches with CMT have higher concentrations of CRP (4.0±1.9mg/L) compared to the control group (1.0±1.2mg/L) and their values were positively correlated with inflammation and/or macroscopic ulceration (r=0.4), tumor size (r=0.6), histopathological grade (r=0.6), metastatic lymph node (r=0.6) and clinical stage (r=0.8).

ABSTRACT

The breeding of exotic birds as pets has been growing worldwide, including in Brazil. Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) is an exotic bird belonging to the Psittaciform order. However, incorrect environmental stimuli, confinement, inadequate nutrition and incorrect use of antibiotics can cause stress in these birds, generating immunosuppression, predisposing them to opportunistic diseases. Therefore, the objective of this study was to report the influence of uncontrolled use of antibiotics in triggering bacterial and fungal infections in cockatiel. A 3-month-old cockatiel was treated with apathy, ruffled feathers, diarrhea, sneezing and ingluvial compaction. The bird was submitted to antibiotic therapy performed by the owner. Samples were collected for cytological and microbiological analysis. The cytology showed Gram-negative rods and Gram-positive diplococci, as well as yeast cells confirmed as Candida albicans. Hafnia alvei enterobacteria were also isolated in the bacterial culture of the bird's throat and Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterococcus faecalis were isolated in the organs from the autopsy. Inadequate management in association with the indiscriminate use of antibiotics are important factors that promote microbiota imbalance with consequent triggering of bacterial and fungal infections by agents with high antibiotic resistance, which can cause death in cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus).

Bitches with CMT have higher concentrations of CRP (4.0±1.9mg/L) compared to the control group (1.0±1.2mg/L) and their values were positively correlated with inflammation and/or macroscopic ulceration (r=0.4), tumor size (r=0.6), histopathological grade (r=0.6), metastatic lymph node (r=0.6) and clinical stage (r=0.8).(AU)

The average concentration of LDH was significantly higher in CMT (424.9±244.4U / L) compared to the control group (299.0±170.3 U / L) and its values were positively correlated with inflammation and / or macroscopic ulceration (r=0.6), tumor size (r=0.5), histopathological grade (r=0.6), metastatic lymph node (r=0.7) and clinical stage (r=0.5).(AU)

Inadequate management in association with the indiscriminate use of antibiotics are important factors that promote microbiota imbalance with consequent triggering of bacterial and fungal infections by agents with high antibiotic resistance, which can cause death in cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus).(AU)

Nanoencapsulation reduced the toxicity of CVA; however, nCVA and CVA presented similar results in the FECRT.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the yeast biofilm growth kinetics and ultrastructure of Sporothrix schenckii complex and assess their mature biofilm susceptibility in filamentous and yeast forms to potassium iodide (KI) and miltefosine (MIL). Yeast biofilms were evaluated by crystal violet staining, XTT reduction assay and microscopic techniques. Susceptibility of planktonic and sessile cells was analyzed by broth microdilution. S. schenckii complex in yeast form produced biofilms, with an optimum maturation at 96 h, showing multilayered blastoconidia embedded in extracellular matrix. KI and MIL minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranges against planktonic cells were 62,500-250,000 µg/ml and 0.125-4 µg/ml, respectively. KI and MIL reduced biofilm metabolic activity by 75.4% and 67.7% for filamentous form and 55.1% and 51.6% for yeast form, respectively. This study demonstrated that S. schenckii complex forms biofilms in vitro, and potassium iodide and miltefosine inhibit Sporothrix spp. biofilms in both filamentous and yeast forms.

ABSTRACT

The canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is an inflammatory skin disease, chronic itchy that affects genetically predisposed individuals, being commonly associated with production of IgE antibodies. The aim of this study was to describe a case of CAD, evidencing its clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment. A Wood lamp, skin deep scraping, skin imprint, fungal and bacterial culture, ear cytology, serological examination for canine visceral leishmaniasis (LVC) and allergen sensitivity test were performed. The animal presented a series of disseminated dermatological lesions accompanied by intense pruritus, where it is possible to observe presences of secondary infections by bacteria and yeasts fungi. Thus, it was decided to topical treatment with shampoo chlorhexidine base 2% associated with miconazole 2.5% and use moisturizer. For bilateral otitis, otologic solution of cyclopirox olamine 1% and glycyrrhizic acid 0.5% was prescribed. After negative response to the initial treatment, the oral use of prednisolone associated with hydroxyzine and soon after cyclosporine was introduced, and clinical control was performed. Although several therapeutic alternatives are available, cure is still not possible, and lesion control is the best treatment approach.
