ABSTRACT

A 9-y-old Mangalarga Marchador gelding was referred to a veterinary hospital because of a swelling on the upper right side of the neck. Ultrasound examination revealed a multilocular structure adjacent to the thyroid gland with low echogenic content suggestive of fluid. The mass was removed surgically. Histologically, the cystic cavities in the surgical sample were filled with abundant eosinophilic secreta and lined by cuboidal, segmentally ciliated, columnar epithelium with interspersed goblet cells. Segmental crowding of the multilayered lining of the cyst was noted. Immunohistochemistry suggested the presence of both C cells and follicular cells, given the positivity of the immunomarkers calcitonin and TTF-1, respectively. The histogenesis of ultimobranchial cysts is uncertain. Based on clinical, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical identification, the cystic structure in this case is compatible with an ultimobranchial body cyst.

ABSTRACT

The new generation of distributed optical sensors with improved interrogation, multiplexing, and acquisition techniques with the possibility of performing measurements with high spatial resolution over tens of kilometers of optical fiber has led to the accumulation of a vast volume of data that can present a big challenge to process and store all this data. Looking for simple solutions to this problem, we present in this paper a data compression method for distributed temperature sensors. This compression approach performs the spatial derivative of the temperature signal, constituting a simple and effective method to remove redundant information. Also, this compression methodology is suitable for temperature data, as it follows thermal variations over time and can be applied to any temperature profile with multiple thermal events along the sensing fiber, whether in heating or cooling circumstances. Tests performed with a large amount of experimental data showed that an average compression ratio of 1.5× can be obtained by removing redundant spatial temperature variations without losing spatial resolution.

ABSTRACT

Raman-based distributed temperature sensor (RDTS) devices have grown dramatically over the past two decades, partially driving the optical sensor industry. Over nearly four decades, most academic investigations about RDTS have focused on developing distributed sensor devices operating at the wavelength of 1550 nm, given the low loss of standard single-mode fibers in this spectral region. Certainly, the wavelength of 1550 nm is ideal for long-range sensing applications. However, at this wavelength, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of RDTS systems is degraded, given the low intensity of the measured signals. Looking for simple solutions to improve the SNR of this sensing technology, we discuss in this paper an RDTS operating at the spectral region of 840 nm as an alternative for short-range distributed temperature sensing applications delivering an improved SNR.

ABSTRACT

Measuring cortisol levels as a stress biomarker is essential in many medical conditions associated with a high risk of metabolic syndromes such as anxiety and cardiovascular diseases, among others. One technology that has a growing interest in recent years is fiber optic biosensors that enable ultrasensitive cortisol detection. Such interest is allied with progress being achieved in basic interrogation, accuracy improvements, and novel applications. The development of improved cortisol monitoring, with a simplified manufacturing process, high reproducibility, and low cost, are challenges that these sensing mechanisms still face, and for which solutions are still needed. In this paper, a comprehensive characterization of a D-shaped fiber optic immunosensor for cortisol detection based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) enabled by gold coating is reported. Specifically, the sensor instrumentation and fabrication processes are discussed in detail, and a simulation with its complete mathematical formalism is also presented. Moreover, experimental cortisol detection tests were performed for a detection range of 0.01 to 100 ng/mL, attaining a logarithmic sensitivity of 0.65 ± 0.02 nm/log(ng/mL) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.46 ng/mL. Additionally, an investigation of signal processing is also discussed, with the main issues addressed in order to highlight the best way to extract the sensing information from the spectra measured with a D-shaped sensor.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we analyze different types of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) working under several different parameters to best model the nonlinear optical dynamics of pulse propagation. Here we studied the propagation of picosecond and femtosecond pulses under distinct initial conditions going through 13 m of a highly nonlinear fiber and demonstrated the application of two RNNs returning error metrics such as normalized root mean squared error (NRMSE) as low as 9%. Those results were further extended for a dataset outside the initial pulse conditions used on the RNN training, and the best-proposed network was still able to achieve a NRMSE below 14%. We believe that this study can contribute to a better understanding of building RNNs employed for modeling nonlinear optical pulse propagation and of how the peak power and nonlinearity affect the prediction error.

ABSTRACT

Aquaculture is a fundamental sector of the food industry nowadays. However, to become a sustainable and more profitable industry, it is necessary to monitor several associated parameters, such as temperature, salinity, ammonia, potential of hydrogen, nitrogen dioxide, bromine, among others. Their regular and simultaneous monitoring is expected to predict and avoid catastrophes, such as abnormal fish mortality rates. In this paper, we propose a novel anomaly detection approach for the early prediction of high fish mortality based on a multivariate Gaussian probability model. The goal of this approach is to determine the correlation between the number of daily registered physicochemical parameters of the fish tank water and the fish mortality. The proposed machine learning model was fitted with data from the weaning and pre-fattening phases of Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) collected over 2018, 2019, and 2020. This approach is suitable for real-time tracking and successful prediction of up to 80% of the high fish mortality rates. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed anomaly detection approach is the first time studied and applied in the framework of the aquaculture industry.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to describe and evaluate a laparoscopic technique to promote nephrosplenic space ablation in horses using a homologous pericardium implant, preserved in 98% glycerin and fixed using laparoscopic polydioxanone staples. In this experimental study, six Arabian horses without previous related abdominal diseases were used. The surgical procedures were performed in the standing position under sedation with alpha-2 agonists and opioids, associated with local infiltration of the local anesthetic in the portal sites. The horses were restrained in a stock, and the left flanks were clipped and aseptically prepared. Three portals were created on the left flank, and the homologous pericardium implant, measuring 10 × 5 cm, was introduced into the abdominal cavity covering the nephrosplenic space, positioned between the dorsal border of the spleen and perirenal fascia, fixed with polydioxanone staples using a laparoscopic stapler. Physical examination and blood and peritoneal fluid sample collection were performed on days 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 30, and 60 of the postoperative period, and an exploratory laparoscopy was performed on day 60 to assess the effectiveness of the technique and eventual complications. There were no difficulties or significant complications during the surgical procedure, and the total average time to perform was 49.83 minutes (±10.19). In the postoperative period, there was a significant increase (P < .05) in the plasma fibrinogen concentration on days 7 and 14 compared with the preoperative moment. The total nucleated cell count in the peritoneal fluid increased (P < .05) on days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 30. After 60 days of the surgical procedure, the physical examination and laboratory data were within the normal range. Exploratory laparoscopy performed on day 60 revealed complete occlusion of the nephrosplenic space, and it was not possible to differentiate the pericardium implant from the scar tissue, not even in the histological evaluation performed on the collected samples. In two horses, omentum adhesion was observed in the region where the implant was fixed, and in two others, a synechia was observed between the implant area and mesocolon without association with clinical complications. The animals were followed up for 36 months at surgery, and no colic signs were observed along this period. It was concluded that the technique of ablation of the nephrosplenic space, using homologous pericardium preserved in 98% glycerin, fixed by polydioxanone staples by laparoscopy, was simple to perform, effective, and free of clinical complications during the period of evaluation, and its use may be indicated as a surgical option in clinical cases of horses with recurrent nephrosplenic entrapment.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes and experimentally demonstrates a linearization technique for interferometric fiber sensors. From a 2D reconstruction of the interference spectra and subsequent denoising process, relevant improvements in linearity and range are obtained for both angle and liquid level sensors. This linearization technique can be easily implemented on any graphical interface of different types of interferometric sensors without requiring modification of the sensor physical structure, which makes it a low-cost solution. In this regard, this approach finds a wide field of applications. With the appropriate modifications, it can potentially be applied to other non-interferometric sensors that have moderate linearity and operating range.

ABSTRACT

Cryptococcosis, caused by yeasts of the genus Cryptococcus, is an infectious disease with a worldwide distribution. Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are the species that commonly cause this disease in humans; however, infections caused by Cryptococcus laurentii, especially in immunocompromised patients, are increasingly being reported. Owing to the increase in the resistance of fungi to antifungals, and a lack of treatment options, it is important to seek new therapeutic alternatives such as natural products. Among these are plant species such as Punica granatum, which is used in folk medicine to treat various diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the activity of the acetate fraction of P. granatum leaf extract against environmental and clinical isolates of Cryptococcus. Three environmental isolates of C. laurentii, PMN, PMA, and PJL II, isolated from soils of different municipalities in the state of Maranhão, a clinical isolate, C. gattii, from a patient with neurocryptococcosis, and a standard strain of C. gattii (ATCC 32068) were used. The minimum and fractional inhibitory concentrations (MIC and FIC, respectively) and time-kill curve of the extract and fluconazole were determined to assess the susceptibility profile of the fungal isolates. Larvae of Tenebrio molitor were infected with Cryptococcus strains, and the effects of acetate fraction of P. granatum extract and fluconazole on the survival and fungal burden were determined. The extract activity was tested against pre-formed biofilms. The acetate fraction of P. granatum extract showed promising antifungal activity against all the species of Cryptococcus evaluated in this study, with an MIC value lower than that of fluconazole. The indices obtained in the FIC test indicated that the antimicrobial effect of the combination of the extract and antifungal was indifferent for 80% of the isolates. The P. granatum acetate fraction reduced the pre-formed biofilm of some isolates, showing better activity than fluconazole, which is consistent with results from fluorescence microscopy. This is the first study on the use of P. granatum and its ability to inhibit Cryptococcus biofilms; therefore, further studies and tests are needed to investigate the components and mechanism of action of P. granatum against cryptococcosis agents.

ABSTRACT

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat infections of various origins. In the last few decades, the constant use of gentamicin has resulted in increased bacterial resistance and nephrotoxicity in some cases. In this study, we examined the ability of Dioclea violacea lectin (DVL) in modulate the antimicrobial activity of gentamicin and reduce the nephrotoxicity induced by this drug. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) obtained for DVL against all strains studied was not clinically relevant (MIC ≥ 1024 µg/mL). However, when DVL was combined with gentamicin, a significant increase in antibiotic action was observed against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. DVL also reduced antibiotic tolerance in S. aureus during 10 days of continuous treatment. In addition, DVL presented a nephroprotective effect, reducing sodium excretion, N-Gal expression and urinary protein, that are important markers of glomerular and tubular injuries. Taken together, studies of inhibition of hemagglutinating activity, fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular docking revealed that gentamicin can interact with DVL via the carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD), suggesting that the results obtained in this study may be directly related to the interaction of DVL-gentamicin and with the ability of the lectin to interact with glycans present in the cells of the peritoneum.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we propose a new, to the best of our knowledge, technique based on the measurement and analysis of the intensity of the interference pattern as an alternative approach for interrogating liquid-level interferometric fiber sensors. This interrogation is based on calculations that can take into account a vast number of peaks and dips of an interferometric spectrum, allowing the use of such devices as distributed sensors capable of measuring longer-level ranges. Here, liquid-level measurements of up to 120 mm were experimentally obtained with high linearity and a sensitivity of $ - {0.042}\;{\rm dB/mm}$-0.042dB/mm.

In this paper, we report for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the experimental generation of dark pulses in the 1.5 µm band from a passively $Q$Q-switched fiber laser employing graphite oxide as the saturable absorber, generating tunable microsecond pulses with kHz repetition rates. The graphite oxide samples were obtained by recycling the graphite present in Li-ion batteries used in cell phones through a chemical separation and oxidation process. Sample characterization employing x-ray diffraction, solid-state $ ^{{13}}{\rm C} $13C nuclear magnetic resonance, and Raman spectroscopy showed that the produced graphite oxide exhibited a homogeneously oxidized structure. Dark pulse emission could be observed at a relatively low pump threshold of 35 mW in a short 20 m laser cavity, indicating that the graphite oxide acted as a saturable absorber, significantly enhancing the nonlinearity of the laser cavity. Additionally, dark pulse operation was demonstrated at a high stability with a signal-to-noise ratio of 56 dB and a pulse-to-pulse timing jitter of 159.84 fs.

ABSTRACT

Statins are drugs used for people with abnormal lipid levels (hyperlipidemia) and are among the best-selling medications in the United States. Thus, the aspects related to the production of these drugs are of extreme importance for the pharmaceutical industry. Herein, we provide a non-exhaustive review of fungal species used to produce statin and highlighted the major factors affecting the efficacy of this process. The current biotechnological approaches and the advances of a metabolic engineer to improve statins production are also emphasized. The biotechnological production of the main statins (lovastatin, pravastatin and simvastatin) uses different species of filamentous fungi, for example Aspergillus terreus. The statins production is influenced by different types of nutrients available in the medium such as the carbon and nitrogen sources, and several researches have focused their efforts to find the optimal cultivation conditions. Enzymes belonging to Lov class, play essential roles in statin production and have been targeted to genetic manipulations in order to improve the efficiency for Lovastatin and Simvastatin production. For instance, Escherichia coli strains expressing the LovD have been successfully used for lovastatin production. Other examples include the use of iRNA targeting LovF of A. terreus. Therefore, fungi are important allies in the fight against hyperlipidemias. Although many studies have been conducted, investigations on bioprocess optimization (using both native or genetic- modified strains) still necessary.

ABSTRACT

Staphylococcus aureus is a notorious human pathogen associated with serious nosocomial and community-acquired infections, such as pneumonia, meningitis, endocarditis, toxic shock syndrome, and sepsis, among others. The objective of this study was to investigate the molecular profile, antimicrobial resistance, and clonal diversity of S. aureus isolated from the bloodstream. The determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the antimicrobial was performed by an automated method. The presence of several virulence and resistance genes was evaluated by PCR. In addition, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was used to analyze the clonal diversity of S. aureus. A high resistance to oxacillin (78%), clindamycin (78%), erythromycin (70%), ciprofloxacin (61%), and gentamicin (52%) was observed among the isolates. In most of them, the following virulence genes were detected: hlb (83%), ebpS (61%), icaA (57%), fnbpA (17%), and clfA (13%). Only one isolate carried the pvl gene. MLST analysis identified five new sequence types (STs): 5429, 5430, 5431, 5432, and 5433, as well as another seven-ST5, ST97, ST398, ST101, ST30, ST461, and ST2779-among the remaining strains. These seven STs and the four new STs are clustered in four clonal complexes: CC1, CC2, CC7, and CC17. Phylogenetic analysis showed the genetic relationship of the five new ST strains with another 18 strains. Altogether, these analyses indicate the horizontal transfer acquisition of virulence factor genes and multidrug resistance.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the effects of a physiotherapy protocol applied in joints with osteochondritis dissecans submitted to arthroscopy. Twelve horses totaling twenty joints were used and divided into two uniform groups, according to articular lesion grade. Treated Group (TG) received the physiotherapy protocol (cryotherapy, passive rage motion and controlled exercise) that initiate just after anesthetic recovery and extended for five days. Control Group (CG) remained resting in stall during the same period. Physical examination and synovial fluid analysis were used to evaluate the treatment. The synovial fluid examination consisted of physical analysis (color, aspect, and viscosity), mucin clot evaluation, Serum Amyloid A, Prostaglandin E2 and urea concentration. Synovial samples were collected by arthrocentesis at the beginning of the surgical procedure (D1), 48 hours (D3) and 96 hours (D5) after surgery. Before arthroscopy and daily during the postoperative period joints were evaluated by physical exam: superficial temperature (°C), range of motion (degrees) and circumference (centimeters). The joint physical examination showed no significant difference between groups and neither along the days for the same group. The parameters of synovial fluid showed difference over the moments in each group but didn't have difference between groups. Color and aspect had the same patterns across moments, in CG fluid had significant change when compared D1 with D3 (color and aspect: p<0.001) and D5 (color: p<0.001; aspect: p<0.05) becoming mostly bloody and cloudy in D3 and D5. However in TG the difference was significant just between D1 and D3 (color and aspect: p<0.05), showing an improvement of synovial fluid in D5 (color and aspect: p<0.05). Viscosity and mucin clot evaluation showed significant change in CG between D1 and D3 (viscosity: p<0.01; mucin clot: p<0.05) and between D1 and D5 (viscosity: p<0.01;mucin clot: p<0.01). In TG no significant difference of viscosity and mucin clot was observed over the moments, showing an early improvement of synovial fluid quality. The Serum Amyloid A concentration showed an extremely significant increase in CG (p<0.001) when compared D1 (1217.13±664.47µg/mL) and D3 (42423.80±52309.31µg/mL). The comparison between D1 and D5 in CG, and across moments in TG, had no statistical difference. The PGE2 eicosanoid remained statistically unchanged all over the time. Urea showed significant increase in D3 when compared to D1 (p<0.001) in CG, and had no variation in TG. The physiotherapy protocol minimized the inflammatory mediators and provided minor alterations in synovial fluid after arthroscopy.(AU)


Este estudo avaliou os efeitos de um protocolo fisioterápico, aplicado em articulações com osteocondrite dissecante, submetidas à artroscopia. Foram utilizados 12 cavalos, totalizando 20 articulações, divididas em dois grupos homogêneos de acordo com a graduação da lesão articular. O grupo tratado (GT) recebeu o protocolo fisioterápico (crioterapia, movimentação passiva e exercício controlado) que se iniciou imediatamente após a recuperação anestésica e se estendeu por cinco dias. O grupo controle (GC) permaneceu em repouso na baia, pelo mesmo período. Exame físico da articulação e análise do líquido sinovial foram utilizados para avaliar o tratamento. O exame do líquido sinovial consistiu em análise física (cor, aspecto e viscosidade), avaliação do coágulo de mucina e concentrações de amiloide sérica A, prostaglandina E2 e ureia. Amostras de líquido sinovial foram colhidas por artrocentese no início do procedimento cirúrgico (D1) e após 48 (D3) e 96 horas (D5) do procedimento cirúrgico. Antes da artroscopia e diariamente no período pós-operatório, as articulações foram avaliadas por exame físico: temperatura superficial (°C), ângulo de flexão (graus), circunferência (centímetros). A avaliação física das articulações não apresentou diferença significativa entre os grupos nem ao longo dos dias em cada grupo. Nas análises do líquido sinovial, observou-se uma variação diferente entre os momentos em cada grupo porém sem diferença significativa entre os grupos. A cor e o aspecto tiveram resultados semelhantes ao longo do tempo, no GC houve uma alteração significativa quando comparados D1 e D3 (cor e aspecto: p<0,001) e D1 e D5 (cor: p<0,001; aspecto: p<0,05) tornando-se sanguinolento e turvo na maioria das amostras em D3 e D5. Já no GT, houve diferença significativa apenas entre D1 e D3 (cor e aspecto: p<0,05), demonstrando melhora no líquido sinovial em D5 (cor e aspecto: p<0,05). A viscosidade e o coágulo de mucina apresentou alteração significativa no GC entre D1 e D3 (viscosidade: p<0,01; coágulo de mucina: p<0,05) e entre D1 e D5 (viscosidade e coágulo de mucina: P<0,01). No grupo tratado não foram observadas alterações significativas em viscosidade e coágulo de mucina, ao longo dos momentos, demonstrando uma melhora precoce na qualidade do líquido sinovial. A amiloide sérica A apresentou um aumento extremamente significante no GC (p<0,001) quando comparados D1 (1217,13±664,47µg/dL) e D3 (42423,80±52309,31µg/dL). Quando comparados D1 e D5 no GC e ao longo do tempo no GT não foram observadas diferenças significativas. A concentração de PGE2 permaneceu sem alterações. As mensurações de ureia apresentaram aumento significativo em D3 quando comparado a D1 (p<0,001) no GC e não apresentou variação no GT. O protocolo fisioterápico minimizou os mediadores inflamatórios e proporcionou menor alteração do líquido sinovial após artroscopia.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Severe wounds result in large lesions and/or loss of function of the affected areas. The treatment of wounds has challenged health professionals due to its complexity, especially in patients with chronic diseases (such as diabetes), and the presence of pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Taking this into consideration, the development of new therapies for wound healing requires immediate attention. Ethnopharmacological studies performed in different countries have shown the use of several plants from the Asteraceae family as wound-healing agents. Evidences gained from the traditional medicine have opened new ways for the development of novel and more efficient therapies based on the pharmacological properties of these plants. In this article, we discuss the literature data on the use of Asteraceae plants for the treatment of wounds, based on the ethnopharmacological relevance of each plant. Special attention was given to studies showing the mechanisms of action of Asteraceae-derived compounds and clinical trials. Ageratina pichinchensis (Kunth) R.M. King and H. Rob. and Calendula officinalis L. preparations/compounds were found to show good efficacy when assessed in clinical trials of complicated wounds, including venous leg ulcers and foot ulcers of diabetic patients. The compounds silibinin [from Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn.] and jaceosidin (from Artemisia princeps Pamp.) were identified as promising compounds for the treatment of wounds. Overall, we suggest that Asteraceae plants represent important sources of compounds that may act as new and efficient healing products.

ABSTRACT

Thioredoxin plays an essential role in bacterial antioxidant machinery and virulence; however, its regulatory actions in the host are less well understood. Reduced human Trx activates transient receptor potential canonical 5 (TRPC5) in inflammation, but there is no evidence of whether these receptors mediate bacterial thioredoxin effects in the host. Importantly, TRPC5 can form functional complexes with other subunits such as TRPC4. Herein, E. coli-derived thioredoxin induced mortality in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) injected mice, accompanied by reduction of leukocyte accumulation, regulation of cytokine release into the peritoneum, and impairment of peritoneal macrophage-mediated phagocytosis. Dual TRPC4/TRPC5 blockade by ML204 increased mortality and hypothermia in thioredoxin-treated LPS mice but preserved macrophage's ability to phagocytose. TRPC5 deletion did not alter body temperature but promoted additional accumulation of peritoneal leukocytes and inflammatory mediator release in thioredoxin-administered LPS mice. Thioredoxin diminished macrophage-mediated phagocytosis in wild-type but not TRPC5 knockout animals. TRPC5 ablation did not affect LPS-induced responses. However, ML204 caused mortality associated with exacerbated hypothermia and decreased peritoneal leukocyte numbers and cytokines in LPS-injected mice. These results suggest that bacterial thioredoxin effects under LPS stimuli are mediated by TRPC4 and TRPC5, shedding light on the additional mechanisms of bacterial virulence and on the pathophysiological roles of these receptors.

ABSTRACT

Eugenol is a phenolic compound and the main constituent of the essential oil of clove India. Although there are reports of some pharmacological effects of eugenol, this study is the first that proposes to evaluate the antifungal effects of this phenol against both Cryptococcus gattii and C. neoformans cells. The effect of eugenol against yeast cells was analyzed for drug susceptibility, alterations in cell diameter, capsule properties, amounts of ergosterol, oxidative burst, and thermodynamics data. Data demonstrated that there is no interaction between eugenol and fluconazole and amphotericin B. Eugenol reduced the cell diameter and the capsule size, increased cell surface/volume, changed positively the cell surface charge of cryptococcal cells. We also verified increased levels of reactive oxygen species without activation of antioxidant enzymes, leading to increased lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial membrane depolarization and reduction of lysosomal integrity in cryptococcal cells. Additionally, the results showed that there is no significant molecular interaction between eugenol and C. neoformans. Morphological alterations, changes of cellular superficial charges and oxidative stress play an important role in antifungal activity of eugenol against C. gattii and C. neoformans that could be used as an auxiliary treatment to cutaneous cryptococcosis.

ABSTRACT

The arsenal of drugs available to treat infections caused by eukaryotic and prokaryotic microbes has been declining exponentially due to antimicrobial resistance phenomenon, leading to an urgent need to develop new therapeutic strategies. Host-directed immunotherapy has been reported as an attractive option to treat microbial infections. It consists in the improvement of host defenses by increasing the expression of inflammatory mediators and/or controlling of inflammation-induced tissue injury. Although the in vitro antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities of lectins have been extensively demonstrated, few studies have evaluated their in vivo effects on experimental models of infections. This review aims to highlight the experimental use of immunomodulatory plant lectins to improve the host immune response against microbial infections. Lectins have been used in vivo both prophylactically and therapeutically resulting in the increased survival of mice under microbial challenge. Other studies successfully demonstrated that lectins could be used in combination with parasite antigens in order to induce a more efficient immunization. Therefore, these plant lectins represent new candidates for management of microbial infections. Furthermore, immunotherapeutic studies have improved our knowledge about the mechanisms involved in host-pathogen interactions, and may also help in the discovery of new drug targets.
