ABSTRACT

Follicular mucinosis is a rare chronic inflammatory disease of unknown aetiology, presenting as mucin deposits around the follicles and sebaceous glands. It can progress to alopecia of the scalp and other hairy areas. Follicular mucinosis may be a benign primary idiopathic disorder or secondary to malignant lymphoproliferative disorders. It can present with shiny papules or sharply marginated infiltrated erythematous scaling plaques, with follicular accentuation on the scalp, neck, trunk and limbs. There are many local and systemic treatments. This paper discusses the case of an adult with an uncommon acneiform follicular mucinosis controlled with systemic corticosteroids.

ABSTRACT

Surgical treatment of intractable visceral pain has always been a challenge. The relatively recent discovery of a specific visceral pain pathway brought a new insight to this matter. The authors describe a new technique to interrupt this pathway, the CT-guided percutaneous punctate midline myelotomy, successfully applied in two patients with intractable pelvic visceral pain. Due to its simplicity, safety and high effectiveness, it may become the treatment of choice for intractable visceral pain.

ABSTRACT

This article reviews the literature produced by Latin American investigators on the efficacy of psychotherapy. Sixteen studies are described in relation to the aims of the study, patients' diagnoses, sample size, theoretical framework, intervention time, data collection, and main results. Few studies of this type were found, and they were mainly open trials with methodological limitations. Comparison of results was difficult because authors did not plan studies with a view to their being compared. The state of psychotherapy in Latin America is discussed.
