ABSTRACT

A CuI bis-phenanthroline rotaxane was prepared by using the [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE) reaction to graft a bulky dicyanoquinodimethane (DCNQ) stopper. The electronic properties were investigated with electrochemical and photophysical techniques, in parallel with three reference compounds, namely, the DCNQ derivative alone, the DCNQ-based phenanthroline ligand, and an analogue CuI complex lacking the DCNQ moiety. In all the systems containing the DCNQ unit, the lowest electronic excited states are centered thereon, with the singlet level (S1 ) located at about 1.0 eV, as suggested by TDDFT calculations. Accordingly, in the DCNQ-equipped rotaxane, the typical metal-to-ligand charge-transfer luminescence of the CuI center is totally quenched. Ultrafast transient absorption and emission studies show that, in the rotaxane, the final sink of photoinduced processes is the lowest singlet state of the DCNQ moiety (S1 ), which exhibits strong charge-transfer character and a lifetime of 0.4 ps. Its deactivation leads to population of another excited state with a lifetime of 1.3 ps, which can be the related triplet state (T1 ) or a vibrationally hot level (hot-S0 ). Notably, S1 also shows stimulated fluorescence in the near-infrared (NIR) region between 1100 and 1500 nm, corroborating the TDDFT prediction. This unusual finding opens up the study of ultrashort-lived NIR luminescence in organic donor-acceptor systems.

ABSTRACT

The substrate scope of the [2+2] cycloaddition-cycloreversion (CA-CR) reaction between electron-deficient (2,2-dicyanovinyl)benzene (DCVB) or (1,2,2-tricyanovinyl)benzene (TCVB) derivatives and N,N-dimethylanilino (DMA)-substituted acetylenes was investigated. The structural features of the cyanobutadiene products of these transformations were examined and the rates of selected CA-CR reactions were measured. Rate constants for reactions utilizing pentafluorinated TCVB and DCVB were found to be one to two orders of magnitude larger than those for the unsubstituted analogues. Multiple, consecutive CA-CR reactions were performed with substrates incorporating two reactive 2,2-cyanovinyl or 4-ethynylanilino sites. 1,4-Bis(2,2-dicyanovinyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene and 1,4-bis[(4'-dihexylamino)phenylethynyl]benzene were selected as suitably reactive monomers for the synthesis of regular [AB] oligomers wherein the push-pull chromophores were formed in the chain-growth step. Oligomers of two types were isolated: macrocyclic [AB](n) and open-chain B[AB](n) oligomers, with n≤4.

ABSTRACT

Fossil fuel alternatives, such as solar energy, are moving to the forefront in a variety of research fields. Organic photovoltaic systems hold the promise of a lightweight, flexible, cost-effective solar energy conversion platform, which could benefit from simple solution-processing of the active layer. The discovery of semiconductive polyacetylene by Heeger et al. in the late 1970s was a milestone towards the use of organic materials in electronics; the development of efficient protocols for the palladium catalyzed alkynylation reactions and the new conception of steric and conformational advantages of acetylenes have been recently focused the attention on conjugated triple-bond containing systems as a promising class of semiconductors for OPVs applications. We review here the most important and representative (poly)arylacetylenes that have been used in the field. A general introduction to (poly)arylacetylenes, and the most common synthetic approaches directed toward making these materials will be firstly given. After a brief discussion on working principles and critical parameters of OPVs, we will focus on molecular arylacetylenes, (co)polymers containing triple bonds, and metallopolyyne polymers as p-type semiconductor materials. The last section will deal with hybrids in which oligomeric/polymeric structures incorporating acetylenic linkages such as phenylene ethynylenes have been attached onto C(60), and their use as the active materials in photovoltaic devices.

ABSTRACT

We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of five extended arylacetylenes, 9,10-bis-{[m,p-bis(hexyloxy)phenyl]ethynyl}-anthracene (A-P6t, 1), 9,10-bis-[(p-{[m,p-bis(hexyloxy) phenyl]ethynyl}phenyl)ethynyl]-anthracene (PA-P6t, 2), 4,7-bis-{[m,p-bis(hexyloxy)phenyl]ethynyl}-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTZ-P6t, 5), 4,7-bis(5-{[m,p-bis(hexyloxy)phenyl]ethynyl}thien-2-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (TBTZ-P6t, 6), and 7,7'-({[m,p-bis(hexyloxy)phenyl]ethynyl}-2,1,3-benzothiadiazol-4,4'-ethynyl)-2,5-thiophene (BTZT-P6t, 7), and two arylvinylenes, 9,10-bis-{(E)-[m,p-bis(hexyloxy)phenyl]vinyl}-anthracene (A-P6d, 3), 9,10-bis-[(E)-(p-{(E)-[m,p-bis(hexyloxy)phenyl]vinyl}phenyl)vinyl]-anthracene (PA-P6d, 4). Trends in optical absorption spectra and electrochemical redox processes are first described. Next, the thin-film microstructures and morphologies of films deposited from solution under various conditions are investigated, and organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and bulk heterojunction photovoltaic (OPV) cells fabricated. We find that substituting acetylenic for olefinic linkers on the molecular cores significantly enhances device performance. OFET measurements reveal that all seven of the semiconductors are FET-active and, depending on the backbone architecture, the arylacetylenes exhibit good p-type mobilities (mu up to approximately 0.1 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1)) when optimum film microstructural order is achieved. OPV cells using [6,6]-phenyl C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as the electron acceptor exhibit power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) up to 1.3% under a simulated AM 1.5 solar irradiation of 100 mW/cm(2). These results demonstrate that arylacetylenes are promising hole-transport materials for p-channel OFETs and promising donors for organic solar cells applications. A direct correlation between OFET arylacetylene hole mobility and OPV performance is identified and analyzed.

ABSTRACT

We report two new squaraine dyes substituted at the pyrrolic rings with n-hexyl (squaraine 1) or n-hexenyl (squaraine 2) chains. Although internal molecular structure variations are minimal, the presence of the terminal double bond results in a much more compact solid-state structure, dramatically affecting charge transport in the thin films; the hole mobility of 2 is approximately 5x that of 1, and the BHJ OPV power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2 is approximately 2x that of 1. PCEs surpassing 2% for ambient solution-processed devices are demonstrated, the largest so far achieved for squaraine-based organic solar cells.

ABSTRACT

We report the fabrication of organic bulk-heterojunction solar cells based, for the first time, on squaraine/PCBM blends. The most efficient device, solution-processed in air, exhibits J(sc) = 5.70 mA/cm(2), V(oc) = 0.62 V, fill-factor = 0.35, and power conversion efficiency = 1.24%, one of the highest to date for a small molecule solution-processed bulk-heterojunction cell.

ABSTRACT

Singlet oxygen sensitization by organic molecules is a topic of major interest in the development of both efficient photodynamic therapy (PDT) and aerobic oxidations under complete green chemistry conditions. We report on the design, synthesis, biology, and complete spectroscopic characterization (vis-NIR linear and two-photon absorption spectroscopy, singlet oxygen generation efficiencies for both one- and two-photon excitation, electrochemistry, intrinsic dark toxicity, cellular uptake, and subcellular localization) of three classes of innovative singlet oxygen sensitizers pertaining to the family of symmetric squaraine derivatives originating from pi-excessive heterocycles. The main advantage of pi-extended squaraine photosensitizers over the large number of other known photosensitizers is their exceedingly strong two-photon absorption enabling, together with sizable singlet oxygen sensitization capabilities, for their use at the clinical application relevant wavelength of 806 nm. We finally show encouraging results about the dark toxicity and cellular uptake capabilities of water-soluble squaraine photosensitizers, opening the way for clinical small animal PDT trials.

ABSTRACT

The microwave-enhanced synthesis, comparative singlet oxygen sensitization efficiency, and nonlinear optical characterization of a new beta-functionalized porphyrin and its copper complex are described. We show that the introduction of a donor-acceptor push-pull conjugated fragment in the beta position strongly perturbs the porphyrin electronic structure leading to a remarkable one- and two-photon NIR absorption enhancement.
