ABSTRACT

Firesetting behaviors present multifaceted challenges that intersect the realms of mental health, law, and societal welfare. While distinct in nature, firesetting, arson, and pyromania collectively embody a spectrum of behaviors that cause harm with profound implications for mental health and legal system. Firesetting is a behavior, arson is a criminal offense, and pyromania is a classified psychiatric diagnosis. Nevertheless, the underlying motivations for these behaviors in the context of psychiatric symptomatoloty remain poorly understood. Arson alone exacts a staggering financial toll in the United States, emphasizing the urgent need to understand the reason behind these acts. Within legal contexts, mental health professionals frequently encounter individuals exhibiting firesetting behaviors while consulting on legal cases. The strong correlation between firesetting behavior and mental disorders shows a dire need for extensive and detailed collaboration between psychiatric experts, legal practitioners, and fire services. Here, we describe a series of firesetting cases and their ties to the mental health and legal systems underscoring the imperative for integrated, multifaceted approaches to address this pressing societal concern.

ABSTRACT

To meet the growing demand for vegetable production and promote sustainable agriculture, it is imperative to implement effective input management and adopt eco-friendly farming practices. This study aims to compare the environmental impacts of conventional and organic tomato cultivation in the northern plains of India. This study utilizes SimaPro 9.1.1 software for a comprehensive cradle-to-farm gate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), assessing production stages, identifying key environmental factors, and incorporating ReCiPe Midpoint and Endpoint methods with one-hectare as a functional unit. Findings reveal that conventional cultivation is more affected by fertilizer application and transplanting, while organic cultivation emphasizes transplanting and irrigation. Organic cultivation contributes 904.708 kg CO2, while conventional cultivation contributes 1307.917 kg CO2 to Global Warming potential. Switching to organic cultivation leads to a significant 35.04% decrease in all impact categories. Using the endpoint method, organic cultivation achieves a notable 27.16% reduction, scoring 58.30 compared to conventional cultivation's 80.04. The LCA analysis of tomato cultivation highlights Fertilizer application as the predominant environmental concern, emphasizing the need for sustainable techniques to minimize waste and mitigate environmental impacts. This study recommends imposing restrictions on fertilizer and pesticide use and formulating effective policies to promote the adoption of sustainable practices.

ABSTRACT

Tremors are characterized by involuntary rhythmic shaking movement in different regions of the body. Tremors can manifest in various forms and have various causes, including the use of drugs such as lithium and antipsychotic medication. In a clinical setting, it is vital to understand the varieties of tremors presented and administer the appropriate pharmacotherapy needed. We present a case of a patient that has been experiencing fine tremors while on antipsychotics and lithium medication for the past year. We address differentiating the tremors while proposing managing the effects based on their mechanisms of action.

ABSTRACT

Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is the persistent and recurrent use of the internet to engage in video gaming through a single or multiplayer interface that can lead to significant impairment or distress. With technological advancements in the last decade via portable handheld devices, along with their global availability, video games have found a new medium in which they can provide instantaneous access for casual and enthusiastic users alike. Unfortunately, this exponentially increases the possibility of addiction. IGD shares a similar pathophysiological etiology to addiction as drugs or gambling. However, it can be challenging to manage IGD due to the ease of video game access and limited understanding of the newly recognized disorder. This study aims to fill in the knowledge gap concerning the limited research on internet gaming addiction, its consequential effects on human cognitive-behavioral functioning, and pharmacotherapy management as observed in our patient, who developed IGD, starting initially as a casual recreational hobby among peers. This case also highlights the lack of social awareness and seriousness attributed to this disorder. It focuses on using N-acetylcysteine in the management as well as other psychological and psychotropic drugs.

ABSTRACT

Compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) disorder is generally characterized by recurrent and intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, and behaviors that cause individual distress or impair daily functioning. CSB has significant consequences, including but not limited to personal distress, depression, anxiety, and a high risk of sexually transmitted diseases. CSB is often seen along with other psychiatric disorders, most commonly with major depressive and substance use disorders.  A primary goal of treatment for CSB is to help manage the uncontrollable impulses and urges a patient endures by reducing excessive sexual behavior with the use of psychotherapy, self-help groups, and medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs are well-known for their pharmacotherapeutic role in many psychiatric and medical conditions; however, symptoms of hyposexuality are notable side effects.  Here we report our findings on a patient, a 36-year-old male who classified himself as a sex addict since late adolescence, participating in various forms of sexual-related activities at high frequency. He presented to the outpatient clinic for treatment for depression alongside his CSB. He was successfully treated with an SSRI, fluoxetine.

ABSTRACT

Background and objectives In recent years, there has been an increase in the US imprisonment rate. A substantial percentage of those incarcerations are for drug-related offenses. The authors investigated the relationship between the pattern of substance use and drug-related offenses across a broad spectrum of various sociodemographic attributes of the incarcerated population in the United States. Methods Cross-sectional data from the 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates conducted by the Bureau of Judicial Statistics were extracted with inmates who reported possession of a drug at the time of arrest as a primary outcome of interest. Using SAS 9.4 statistical software (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, USA), the authors used multivariate analyses to determine the odds ratios between various sociodemographic attributes of the inmates and possession of substance at the time of the arrest. Logistic regression analysis for age groups in relation to substance possession at the time of arrest is presented in the form of an adjusted odds ratio and their respective confidence interval at p ≤0.5. Results Out of the total 23,798 inmates who reported possession of a drug at the time of arrest, 34.07% were Non-Hispanic Whites, and 31.5% were within the age group of 25-34 years. Only 59.47% of inmates were employed 30 days before the arrest, and 58.02% had less than a high school education. Different patterns of drug use were linked with different types of drugs found in their possession at the time of the arrest. Possession of cannabis at the time of arrest was highest in the age group 18-24 years compared to other age groups (odds ratio: 1.362; 95% CI: 1.159 - 1.602). Inmates with a history of stimulant or hypnotic use were more likely to have another psychoactive substance during a time of the arrest. Only 8.46% of inmates had psychiatric and psychological treatment as part of their sentence. Conclusions A large proportion of incarcerations in the US is because of drug-related offenses, with most of the burden on the younger age group. Inmates should receive psychiatric and psychological treatments for substance use as part of their sentencing while in prison and after release as a form of targeted intervention for this vulnerable group.

ABSTRACT

In the present work, an attempt has been made to study the influence of process parameters of the wire electric discharge machining (WEDM) process on the machining characteristics. The commercially pure titanium is machined by WEDM using brass wire as an electrode. The input parameters in this work were pulse on-time (Aon), pulse off-time (Aoff), servo voltage (SV) and wire tension (WT). On the other hand, dimensional accuracy (DA), average surface roughness (Ra) and maximum surface roughness (Rz) were chosen as the response parameters. The empirical relations developed for response characteristics were solved collectively using Evaluation Based on Distance from Average Solution (EDAS) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The optimized setting for minimizing the surface irregularities while machining titanium alloy on WEDM is predicted as Aon: 8 µs; Aoff: 13 µs; SV: 45 V; and WT: 8 N. Moreover, the predicted solution at the optimized parametric settings came out as DA: 95%; Ra: 3.163 µm; Rz: 22.99 µm; WL: 0.0182 g; and DR: 0.1277 mm. The validation experiments at the optimized setting showed the close agreement between predicted and experimental values. The morphological study by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at the optimized setting revealed a significant reduction in surface defects such as micro cracks, micro cavities, globules and sub-surfaces, etc. In a nutshell, the study justified the effectiveness of EDAS-PSO in efficiently predicting the results for machining of pure titanium (Grade 2) using the WEDM process.

Being one of the most important staple crops of the world, rice has played a vital role in slaking the calorie requirements of the masses in all the inhabitable continents of our planet. Regardless of this fact, there are many environmental concerns related to the rice production systems across the globe. One of the major worries is the emission of lethal greenhouse gases as a result of the different steps and procedures concerned with rice production and their contribution towards global warming. This study presents the status quo of the rice straw burning practice across the globe. It focuses on the greenhouse gas emissions as a result of the open field burning of rice residues and its direct effect on the environment, eventually contributing towards climate change. The study evidently shortlists the most profound regions contributing towards the open burning dilemma and the socio-political reasons associated with it. The study additionally discusses the different alternatives to straw burning with a clear-cut motive of throwing light on the opportunities that lie in the efficacious and sustainable utilization of homogeneous agricultural wastes. Different in-field straw management techniques related to the farmers and off-field methods related to the industry have been discussed. Predicated upon a survey of the life cycle assessment (LCA) studies across the globe, it is concluded that soil incorporation and electricity generation are the most environment friendly alternatives with an enormous scope of improvement in the coming future.

ABSTRACT

Environmental protection is the major concern of any form of manufacturing industry today. As focus has shifted towards sustainable cooling strategies, minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) has proven its usefulness. The current survey intends to make the MQL strategy more effective while improving its performance. A Ranque⁻Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT) was implemented into the MQL process in order to enhance the performance of the manufacturing process. The RHVT is a device that allows for separating the hot and cold air within the compressed air flows that come tangentially into the vortex chamber through the inlet nozzles. Turning tests with a unique combination of cooling technique were performed on titanium (Grade 2), where the effectiveness of the RHVT was evaluated. The surface quality measurements, forces values, and tool wear were carefully investigated. A combination of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and evolutionary techniques (particle swarm optimization (PSO), bacteria foraging optimization (BFO), and teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO)) was brought into use in order to analyze the influence of the process parameters. In the end, an appropriate correlation between PSO, BFO, and TLBO was investigated. It was shown that RHVT improved the results by nearly 15% for all of the responses, while the TLBO technique was found to be the best optimization technique, with an average time of 1.09 s and a success rate of 90%.

ABSTRACT

With regard to the manufacturing of innovative hard-machining super alloys (i.e., Inconel-800), a potential alternative for improving the process is using a novel cutting fluid approach. Generally, the cutting fluids allow the maintenance of a better tool topography that can generate a superior surface quality of machined material. However, the chemical components of fluids involved in that process may produce harmful effects on human health and can trigger environmental concerns. By decreasing the cutting fluids amount while using sustainable methods (i.e., dry), Near Dry Machining (NDM) will be possible in order to resolve these problems. This paper discusses the features of two innovative techniques for machining an Inconel-800 superalloy by plain turning while considering some critical parameters such as the cutting force, surface characteristics (Ra), the tool wear rate, and chip morphology. The research findings highlight the near-dry machining process robustness over the dry machining routine while its great potential to resolve the heat transfer concerns in this manufacturing method was demonstrated. The results confirm other benefits of these methods (i.e., NDM) linked to the sustainability aspects in terms of the clean process, friendly environment, and permits as well as in terms of improving the manufacturing characteristics.
