ABSTRACT

Objectives: Physical inactivity plays a major role in promoting disease outcome, but physical activity enhances effective prevention and treatment of chronic diseases; hence, this study was to determine the effect of anthropometric and demographic factors on the physical activity level of people living with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) on antiretroviral therapy. Materials and Methods: This study adopted a cross-sectional method of descriptive research design. A sample size of 170 participants was recruited for this research comprising 113 females and 57 males, who after obtaining their informed consent were issued questionnaires which they meticulously filled under a proper guidance. The participants were almost proportionally distributed across the three levels of physical activity, though about half of them had a normal weight of body mass index (BMI) based on the information obtained. Results: The study showed that physical activity according to age significantly affected the BMI (P < 0.05). Physical activity level according to gender had no statistically significant effect on BMI of people living with HIV/AIDS on antiretroviral drugs (P > 0.05). However, it was observed that gender had a significant determining effect on BMI, though not related to PAL. Conclusions: The findings possibly imply that the psychological effect and the stigma may be the determining factors for the unwillingness to engage in physical activities. This calls for a renewed sensitization and orientation in this aspect.

ABSTRACT

A set of o-carborane-appended π-conjugated fluorophores and their light-emitting properties in the solid state are reported. The aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) exhibited for one of the fluorenyl derivatives paved the way to successfully preparing o-carborane-containing organic nanoparticles (NPs) homogeneously dispersed in aqueous media that maintain their luminescence properties. Notably, NPs processed as thin films also show high fluorescence efficiency, suggesting potential optical and optoelectronic applications.

ABSTRACT

Recently a choice of fluorescent bioimaging probes have been developed as medical diagnostic tools. Herein, we have introduced a series of coumarin-based target specific probes for cancer theranostic application which play a dual role in the field of both diagnosis and therapy. A fluorogenic version of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between azides and alkynes (DBCO) has been introduced to develop the triazolylcoumarin based fluorescent scaffolds. These scaffolds were screened for their anticancer activity against breast cancer (MCF7) and human epitheloid cervix carcinoma (HeLa) cell line. It was established that triazolylcoumarins (5c and 5d) are having electronegative substitution in the benzene ring displayed most effective anticancer profile in both the cell lines. Compounds 5a and 5d exhibited maximum quantum yield and strong cellular uptake in the MCF-7 cell line.

ABSTRACT

A novel three components approach for the synthesis of bioactive Ru-arene pyridinylmethylene complexes has been developed using pyridine carboxaldehyde, amino pyridine and dichloro (p-cymene) ruthenium(II) dimer as starting materials. These scaffolds were screened for their anticancer activity against breast cancer (MCF7) and human Epitheloid Cervix Carcinoma (HeLa) cell line. It was established that compounds [(η(6)-pcymene)RuCl(κ(2)-N,N-(3,5-dinitro-pyridin-2-yl)-pyridin-2-ylmethylene-amine)]PF6 (4o), [(η(6)-pcymene)RuCl(κ(2)-N,N-N-(3,5-dibromo-pyridin-2-yl)-pyridin-2-ylmethylene-amine)]PF6 (4c), [(η(6)-pcymene)RuCl(κ(2)-N,N-(3,5-dibromo-6-methylpyridin-2-yl)-pyridin-2-ylmethylene-amine)]PF6 (4j) and [(η(6)-pcymene)RuCl(κ(2)-N,N-3(3-bromo-5-methyl-pyridin-2-yl)-pyridin-2-ylmethylene-amine)]PF6 (4b) were significantly active against both the cell lines.

ABSTRACT

We have demonstrated a novel and green approach for the synthesis of 2-substituted benzothiazole analogues. A number of 2-aryl and heteroaryl benzothiazole scaffolds were synthesized using Amberlite IR-120 resin under microwave irradiation. The catalytic role and reusability of the resin was well established here. 2-Substituted benzothiazole analogues (3a-l) were also tested against several bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella) and cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and HeLa). The stability of compound 2-phenyl benzothiazole (3a) and 2-pyridin-2-yl-benzothiazole (3k) in GSH (0.01mM dissolved in DMSO) was measured by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Compound 3k also shows remarkable fluorescence in MeOH.
