ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with physicotechnical and dosimetric support of technology of therapeutic whole-body irradiation on a serial gamma apparatus ROKUS, with which a majority of radiological institutions in the USSR are fit out. Technology consists of the following procedures: patient positioning with relation to a source with a horizontal axis of radiation. Correction of dose distribution by means of a three-element compensator taking into account patient's constitutional peculiarities and preradiation preparation data; double irradiation in the bilateral regimen in the supine position.

ABSTRACT

The main directions of research activities, pursued in the Department of Medical Radiation Physics over 25 years, are reviewed. The staff-members have done a lot for the development of Soviet modern radiotherapeutic engineering (electron accelerators). They are devising a cyclotron complex for purely medical purposes. Investigations in fundamental dosimetry, software for radiation therapy, computer use in x-ray studies will permit research in the following directions: --physicotechnical aspects of medical use of cyclotrons; --automation of radiation therapy technology (including software and control systems); --procedures to ensure quality in radiation therapy; --dosimetric maintenance of radiobiological experiments; --computer use for analysis of medical images.

ABSTRACT

Proceeding from analysis of the influence of parameters of the target-filter system on radiation-physical characteristics of braking radiation, some recommendations were issued for assessment of the efficacy of the forming systems of medical accelerators of electrons. A new criterion--a coefficient of the forming system efficacy--was introduced, characterizing a beam formation tract with relation to a whole set of radiotherapeutic problems.

ABSTRACT

The paper presents methods and results of a study of radiation-physical characteristics of inhibitory radiation beam with the Grenz energy of 15MeV generated by an electron linear accelerator LUE-15M. Special emphasis is laid on primary dosimetric information used for the planning of radiotherapy: depth doses, beam profiles, dose functions of a collimated beam. It has been shown that in general the accelerator meets the requirements of the International Electrotechnical Commission. General error in the focal absorbed dose at the expense of variable parameters of the accelerator was evaluated. It does not exceed +/- 3.5%.

ABSTRACT

Thermoluminescent dosimetry in the Mix-D material was used to study the dosimetric characteristics of discrete sources in the form of titanium and nylon capsules, sizes 0.8 X 2.5 and 1.7 X 7 mm with an activity of 20-40 MB K. Permissible within the limits of volume subject to radiotherapy, dose field parameters and a higher dose gradient beyond the field limits as compared to 226Ra, 198Au and 192Ir were established. Manufactured 125I discrete sources meet the requirements of interstitial radiation therapy in the protracted tumor irradiation mode.
