ABSTRACT

Biodiesel is one among the recent developments in the field of renewable energy research. To enhance the combustion characteristics of compression ignition engine, industry and academicians were working towards clean and renewable energy resource. Algal biodiesel was one of the major research arenas in the recent decade of renewable energy. Bio-oil from marine brown macro algae, Stoechospermum marginatum was used as the test fuel in this study. The purpose of this numerical study was to analyse the combustion behaviour of compression ignition engine when fuelled with Stoechospermum marginatum biodiesel as a fuel. The numerical study was performed using the zero-dimensional combustion model by incorporating the dynamic combustion duration during the heat transfer using the MATLAB Simulink software. The developed model which incorporated the instantaneous combustion duration was a novel approach. Validations of the numerical results on combustion features like in-cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise, rate of heat release, and cumulative heat release were done by comparing it with the experimental data. The deviation between the numerical and experimental values was found to be within 5 to 6%.

ABSTRACT

The testing and performance data of the hybrid vertical axis wind turbines with magnetic levitation analyzed for low rated wind speeds is presented here. All the data are obtained by carrying out the investigations under natural wind conditions at Wind Turbine Research Station (WTRS), Kayathar, Tamilnadu, India. Four different wind turbine configurations namely helical Savonius - simple Savonius hybrid in two stage, helical Savonius - helical Bach hybrid in two stage, helical Bach - simple Bach hybrid in two stage, and single stage helical Bach. All the raw data obtained are processed and presented to compare the parameters among the different vertical axis wind turbine configurations.

ABSTRACT

The data on performance parameters of a horizontal axis small wind turbine (HAWT) with blade tip power system (BTPS) using permanent magnetic generator is presented. The tests are carried out for low wind velocities ranging from 7 m/s to 10 m/s. The data is acquired using data acquisition system equipped with Labview© software and the processed data is represented in terms of non-dimensional parameters, namely power coefficient (Cp), torque coefficient (CT) and tip speed ratio (λ). Moreover, as permanent magnetic generator is used in this HAWT with BTPS, the frictional as well as other losses are significantly reduced. This is reflected in terms of non-dimensional electrical power coefficient. The mechanical and electrical power coefficient values are closer with respect to each other. This measured data at laboratory conditions provides a benchmark for future open field environment tests and numerical simulation studies of this small wind turbine.

ABSTRACT

The performance test on a helical Savonius style VAWT are carried out with end plates and without end plates for low wind velocities from 3 m/s to 6 m/s. The raw data measured using instruments are recorded using digital acquisition system. These data are processed and presented as dimensionless parameters namely, coefficient of power, coefficient of torque and tip speed ratio in order to compare it with other VAWTs.

ABSTRACT

Performance and load testing data of a three bladed two stage LENZ type vertical axis wind turbine from the experiments conducted in an open environment condition at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai (location 23.2167°N, 72.6833°E) are presented here. Low-wind velocity ranging from 2 to 11 m/s is available everywhere irrespective of climatic seasons and this data provides the support to the researchers using numerical tool to validate and develop an enhanced Lenz type design. Raw data obtained during the measurements are processed and presented in the form so as to compare with other typical outputs. The data is measured at different wind speeds prevalent in the open field condition ranging from 3 m/s to 9 m/s.

ABSTRACT

The article presents the experimental data on the extraction and transesterification of bio-oil derived from Stoechospermum marginatum, a brown macro marine algae. The samples were collected from Mandapam region, Gulf of Mannar, Tamil Nadu, India. The bio-oil was extracted using Soxhlet technique with a lipid extraction efficiency of 24.4%. Single stage transesterification was adopted due to lower free fatty acid content. The yield of biodiesel was optimized by varying the process parameters. The obtained data showed the optimum process parameters as reaction time 90 min, reaction temperature 65 °C, catalyst concentration 0.50 g and 8:1 M ratio. Furthermore, the data pertaining to the physio-chemical properties of the derived algal biodiesel were also presented.
