ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this paper is to present the development of a new predictive model intended for the calculation of stiffness modulus |E*| determined by a four-point bending beam test (4PBB or 4PB-PR). The model developed, called model A, was based on the Witczak model, which was developed for the dynamic-modulus (DM) method. Most of the asphalt mixtures used to develop the model were high-modulus asphalt concrete (HMAC). The most commonly used methods for determining the stiffness modulus |E*| of asphalt mixtures were also discussed. The paper presents the results of the study for 10 asphalt mixtures but 8 of them were used to develop the predictive model. In addition, the results of complex shear modulus G* tests on neat and modified bituminous binders carried out in a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), necessary for the development of a predictive model, are presented. The tests carried out in the dynamic shear rheometer had significant measurement uncertainties. The results of the volumetric parameters of the asphalt mixtures are also reported. The developed model A has maximum absolute errors e = 1930 MPa (p = 95%) and maximum relative errors re = 50% (p = 95%). The distribution of the absolute errors of the model, after discarding outliers, has a normal distribution as in the development of other models of this type, which was confirmed by appropriate statistical tests. On the basis of the tests and calculations carried out, it was concluded that, in order to increase the precision of the predictive models, it is advisable to reduce the measurement uncertainty of the bitumen complex shear modulus G*. For the developed model A, the limiting values of the stiffness modulus |E*| are also shown, within which the determined stiffness modulus should fall.

ABSTRACT

The thermal properties of pavement layers made of concrete with varying bulk densities are a particularly interesting topic in the context of development road technologies. If a hybrid layer system is used as a starting point, with thin asphalt layers (from 1 cm to 4 cm) laid on top of a foam concrete layer, thermal properties begin to play a crucial role. The main research problem was to create a test method enabling the assessment of the influence of solar heating on the thermal parameters of the building material, especially cement concrete. For this reason, this paper is concerned specifically with the assessment of a new methodology for testing and calculating the value of the thermal diffusivity coefficient of samples made of concrete varying bulk densities. In this case, using the proprietary concept the authors built a solar simulator using a multi-source lighting system. The analysis of the results of laboratory tests and numerical analyses allowed the authors to observe that there is a strong correlation between the bulk density of samples heated and the thermal diffusivity parameter, which appears in the unidirectional heat transfer equation. The strength of this relationship has been expressed with the coefficient of determination and amounts to 99%. The calculated values of the coefficient of thermal diffusivity for samples made of foam concrete range from 0.16×10-6m2s to 0.52×10-6m2s and are lower (from 2.5 to 8 times) than the value determined for samples made of typical cement concrete.

ABSTRACT

The paper presents the results of laboratory investigation on asphalt binders relaxation at low temperature, carried out in a ductilometer using the tensile test with continuous force measurement. Polymer modified asphalt binder samples consisting of a 50/70 penetration grade bitumen mixed with a concentrate of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified bitumen-a 160/220 penetration grade bitumen modified with a SBS copolymer in the amount of 9%-were tested. Therefore, polymer modified binders containing 3%, 4.5%, 6% and 7.5% SBS, respectively, were obtained and investigated. Tensile tests were performed at -16 °C on samples before aging and subjected to short-term aging (RTFOT). Test results in the form of relaxation curves have been mathematically described using a modified generalized Maxwell model. Based on the acquired results, it was shown that the increase of the SBS copolymer content in asphalt binder precipitates the relaxation process, while aging slows down this phenomenon. It has also been proven that with increased content of SBS elastomer in asphalt binder, the effect of short-term aging on binder's stress relaxation ability at low temperatures is reduced.

ABSTRACT

The requirements imposed on road pavements are ever increasing nowadays, necessitating the improvement of the properties of paving materials. The most commonly used paving materials include bituminous mixtures that are composed of aggregate grains bound by a bituminous binder. The properties of bitumens can be improved by modification with polymers. Among the copolymers used for modifying bitumens, styrene-butadiene-styrene, a thermoplastic elastomer, is the most commonly used. This article presents the results of tests conducted on bitumens modified with two types of styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer (linear and radial). Two bitumen types of different penetration grades (35/50 and 160/220) were used in the experiments. The content of styrene-butadiene-styrene added to the bitumen varied between 1% and 6%. The results of the force ductility test showed that cohesion energy can be used for qualitative evaluation of the efficiency of modification of bitumen with styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer. The determined values of the cohesion energy were subjected to the original analysis taking into account the three characteristic elongation zones of the tested binders. The performed analyses made it possible to find a parameter whose values correlate significantly with the content of styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer in the modified bitumen. With smaller amounts of added modifier (approximately 2%), slightly better effects were obtained in the case of linear copolymer styrene-butadiene-styrene and for larger amounts of modifier (5-6%) radial copolymer styrene-butadiene-styrene was found to be more effective. This is confirmed by the changes in the binder structure, as indicated by the penetration index (PI).

ABSTRACT

Various additives to asphalt binders and asphalt mixtures improving their properties are being used more and more frequently in order to improve the durability of road pavements. Such additives include various types of fibres, including aramid fibres. Tests concerning the impact of aramid fibre addition on the properties of selected asphalt mixtures have been described herein. Two types of asphalt mixtures were assessed: high modulus asphalt concrete (HMAC) and stone mastic asphalt (SMA). The examined asphalt mixtures were assessed with regard to: resistance to rutting, resistance to water and frost as well as fatigue resistance. The conducted tests showed relatively small impact of aramid fibre addition on the improvement of some assessed properties of the analysed asphalt mixtures. The obtained results were also compared to results of the tests conducted by the other research team concerning the impact of aramid fibre addition on the properties of the other types of asphalt mixtures.
