ABSTRACT

Forty patients, aged from 55 to 85 years, with post-stroke depression received valdoxan in dosage of 25 mg daily during 3 months. Patient's state was assessed with a battery of scales (The Hamilton depression scale, MMSE, Tinnetti scale etc). The high antidepressive effect and good tolerability of the drug were demonstrated. The improvement of movement and cognitive functions, together with the stabilization of the emotional state, was seen.

ABSTRACT

The paper analyzes in detail various aspects of semiautomatic quantitative analysis of the results of immunohistochemical reaction using the Morphology 5.0 computer program to analyze microscopic images. Various procedures for assessing the extent of expression of nuclear and cytoplastic markers are compared and a rationale is provided to choose the value of the relative area of a microimage. The authors have developed a new method for calculating the optical density of as an indicator of the intensity of expression of the marker under study, which allows one to effectively separate the study staining from the baseline hematoxylin staining.

ABSTRACT

A series of copolymers of acrylamide (Am) with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AmMPSA) and N-2-hydroxypropyl-methacrylamide (HPMA) with acrylic acid (AA) have been synthesized. Complexes of gentamycin in the base form with these polymers and dextran sulfate were obtained. It is established that both poly(AmMPCA) and its complex with gentamycin exhibit an antiviral activity in vitro against human A(H3N2) influenza virus and herpes simplex virus of type 1 (HSV-1). The HPMA-AA copolymer and its complex with gentamycin are only active against HSV-1. Complexes of gentamycin with the polyanions based on the Am derivatives and dextran sulfate showed a high level of antibacterial activity against four bacterial strains. All the polymers studied as well as their complexes with gentamycin demonstrated a low toxicity in vitro, which makes them promising for the creation of preparations with combined antiviral and antimicrobial properties.

ABSTRACT

Modified and unmodified carbon fiber supports were treated with solutions of a polymer-gentamicin complex, possessing high antimicrobial activity and low toxicity. It was found that the antimicrobial activity of modified carbon fiber fabrics depended on the nature of the support and on the immobilization conditions. The highest antimicrobial activity was observed with phosphorus-containing carbon fiber ion exchanger in salt form.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of magnesium sulfate on the efficacy and safety of pharmacological cardioversion with nibentan (NB) in doses up to 0,125 mg/kg in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) and flutter (AFL). Calculated dose of NB was 0.125 mg/kg. It was administered as 2 bolus injections (0.0625 mg/kg each) performed with the interval of 15 minutes. The study included 64 patients (pts) (45 male, age 54+/-9,9 years) with persistent AF (n=56) and AFL (n=8) with median arrhythmia duration 6,7+/-6,8 months (8 days to 36 months). Pts were divided into two groups. In the first (I) group NB was used without preliminary magnesium sulfate administration, in the second group (II) magnesium sulfate was injected in a dose of 50 mg/kg, followed by 0.83 mg/kg/min infusion before NB administration. There was no difference between groups in conversion rates of atrial arrhythmias: 74% and 69%, in groups I and II, respectively (p>0.4). Mean effective dose of NB was the same in investigated groups - 0.09 mg/kg. Administration of initial dose of NB (0.0625 mg/kg) converted AF/AFL to sinus rhythm within 15-min interval in 29.7% of patients. Efficacy of full dose of NB (0.125 mg/kg) was 100% in AFL, 68% in AF. No side effects were registered after initial injection of 0.0625 mg/kg. After administration of 2 boluses (0.125 mg/kg) "torsade de pointes" developed in 2 pts (3%). Magnesium sulfate administration had no influence on NB efficacy and rate of its proarrhythmic events. Limitation of NB total dose to

ABSTRACT

The paper describes a case of diffuse leiomyomatosis of the lung in a 45-year-old female. Leiomyomatosis, a disease noted in females, is considered to include 4 types of multiple smooth muscle lesions: 1) benign metastasizing leiomyoma; 2) lymphangioleiomyomatosis; 3) leiomyomatous peritoneal dissemination; and 4) intravenous leiomyomatosis. The authors present a classification proposed by E. Martin who attempts to pool in it all multiple leiomyomatous lesions observed in females, males, and children.
