ABSTRACT

People with sickle cell disease (SCD) often have emergency department (ED) revisits. The characteristics of people with SCD with ED revisits were assessed in this study using Medicaid administrative claims data from California and Georgia, representing 2794 and 3641 individuals with SCD, respectively. In both states, those with 6+ primary care provider (PCP) encounters had the highest percentage of ED revisits. In California, those with 6+ hematology encounters had the lowest percentage of individuals with an ED revisit; in Georgia, those with 1-2 hematology encounters. Increasing access to hematologic care may reduce ED revisits among people with SCD.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Despite the importance of timely vaccine completion for protection from infectious disease, there is limited knowledge of the immunization adherence rates of children with sickle cell disease (SCD). METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study comparing the immunization rates of children with SCD to those with sickle cell trait between 2008 and 2019 in Georgia. Completion rates for each vaccine and the proportion of children with up-to-date status at 24 and 35 months were calculated and compared between the cohorts. Chi-square tests with odds ratios (OR) for differences and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported on the overall up-to-date rates and rates for individual vaccines at 24 and 35 months for the two cohorts. RESULTS: Children with SCD had higher up-to-date rates than children with sickle cell trait at 24 and 35 months. At 35 months, the overall up-to-date rates (OR = 1.17; 95% CI, 1.04-1.31; p = .004) and the four-dose pneumococcal conjugate vaccine series (OR = 1.36; 95% CI, 1.18-1.57; p < .001) were significantly different between the groups. Both cohorts had the highest completion rates for the hepatitis B series and the lowest rates for the varicella vaccine. Doses of diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine; varicella; and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines were most commonly missed by children in both cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: Children with SCD have better immunization coverage than children with sickle cell trait, but there is an opportunity for improvement. Policymakers and healthcare professionals should focus on increasing access to care coordination services among children with SCD to ensure on-time and preventive healthcare services.

ABSTRACT

Background: Telehealth can be defined as using remote technologies to provide health care. It may increase access to care among people with sickle cell disease (SCD). This study examined (1) telehealth use, (2) characteristics of telehealth use, and (3) differences between telehealth users and nonusers among people with SCD during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of Medicaid claims among four states [California (CA), Georgia (GA), Michigan (MI), Tennessee (TN)] participating in the Sickle Cell Data Collection program. Study participants were individuals ≥1 year old with SCD enrolled in Medicaid September 2019-December 2020. Telehealth encounters during the pandemic were characterized by provider specialty. Health care utilization was compared between those who did (users) and did not (nonusers) use telehealth, stratified by before and during the pandemic. Results: A total of 8,681 individuals with SCD (1,638 CA; 3,612 GA; 1,880 MI; and 1,551 TN) were included. The proportion of individuals with SCD that accessed telehealth during the pandemic varied across states from 29% in TN to 80% in CA. During the pandemic, there was a total of 21,632 telehealth encounters across 3,647 users. In two states (MI and GA), over a third of telehealth encounters were with behavioral health providers. Telehealth users had a higher average number of health care encounters during the pandemic: emergency department (pooled mean = 2.6 for users vs. 1.5 for nonusers), inpatient (1.2 for users vs. 0.6 for nonusers), and outpatient encounters (6.0 for users vs. 3.3 for nonusers). Conclusions: Telehealth was frequently used at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic by people with SCD. Future research should focus on the context, facilitators, and barriers of its implementation in this population.

ABSTRACT

Protein kinase C epsilon (PKCε) regulates behavioural responses to ethanol and plays a role in anxiety-like behaviour, but knowledge is limited on downstream substrates of PKCε that contribute to these behaviours. We recently identified brain-specific serine/threonine-protein kinase 1 (BRSK1) as a substrate of PKCε. Here, we test the hypothesis that BRSK1 mediates responses to ethanol and anxiety-like behaviours that are also PKCε dependent. We used in vitro kinase assays to further validate BRSK1 as a substrate of PKCε and used Brsk1-/- mice to assess the role of BRSK1 in ethanol- and anxiety-related behaviours and in physiological responses to ethanol. We found that BRSK1 is phosphorylated by PKCε at a residue identified in a chemical genetic screen of PKCε substrates in mouse brain. Like Prkce-/- mice, male and female Brsk1-/- mice were more sensitive than wild-type to the acute sedative-hypnotic effect of alcohol. Unlike Prkce-/- mice, Brsk1-/- mice responded like wild-type to ataxic doses of ethanol. Although in Prkce-/- mice ethanol consumption and reward are reduced in both sexes, they were reduced only in female Brsk1-/- mice. Ex vivo slice electrophysiology revealed that ethanol-induced facilitation of GABA release in the central amygdala was absent in male Brsk1-/- mice similar to findings in male Prkce-/- mice. Collectively, these results indicate that BRSK1 is a target of PKCε that mediates some PKCε-dependent responses to ethanol in a sex-specific manner and plays a role distinct from PKCε in anxiety-like behaviour.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess nationally endorsed claims-based quality measures in pediatric sickle cell anemia (SCA). METHODS: Using data from the Sickle Cell Data Collection programs in California and Georgia from 2010 to 2019, we evaluated 2 quality measures in individuals with hemoglobin S/S or S/ß-zero thalassemia: (1) the proportion of patients aged 3 months to 5 years who were dispensed antibiotic prophylaxis for at least 300 days within each measurement year and (2) the proportion of patients aged 2 to 15 years who received at least 1 transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) within each measurement year. We then evaluated differences by year and tested whether performance on quality measures differed according to demographic and clinical factors. RESULTS: Only 22.2% of those in California and 15.5% in Georgia met or exceeded the quality measure for antibiotic prophylaxis, with increased odds associated with rural residence in Georgia (odds ratio 1.61; 95% confidence interval 1.21-2.14) compared with urban residence and a trend toward increased odds associated with a pediatric hematologist prescriber (odds ratio 1.28; 95% confidence interval 0.97, 1.69) compared with a general pediatrician. Approximately one-half of the sample received an annual assessment of stroke risk using TCD (47.4% in California and 52.7% in Georgia), with increased odds each additional year in both states and among younger children. CONCLUSIONS: The rates of receipt of recommended antibiotic prophylaxis and annual TCD were low in this sample of children with SCA. These evidence-based quality measures can be tracked over time to help identify policies and practices that maximize survival in SCA.

ABSTRACT

Sickle cell disease (SCD) remains a public health priority in the United States because of its association with complex health needs, reduced life expectancy, lifelong disabilities, and high cost of care. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted to calculate the crude and race-specific birth prevalence for SCD using state newborn screening program records during 2016-2020 from 11 Sickle Cell Data Collection program states. The percentage distribution of birth mother residence within Social Vulnerability Index quartiles was derived. Among 3,305 newborns with confirmed SCD (including 57% with homozygous hemoglobin S or sickle ß-null thalassemia across 11 states, 90% of whom were Black or African American [Black], and 4% of whom were Hispanic or Latino), the crude SCD birth prevalence was 4.83 per 10,000 (one in every 2,070) live births and 28.54 per 10,000 (one in every 350) non-Hispanic Black newborns. Approximately two thirds (67%) of mothers of newborns with SCD lived in counties with high or very high levels of social vulnerability; most mothers lived in counties with high or very high levels of vulnerability for racial and ethnic minority status (89%) and housing type and transportation (64%) themes. These findings can guide public health, health care systems, and community program planning and implementation that address social determinants of health for infants with SCD. Implementation of tailored interventions, including increasing access to transportation, improving housing, and advancing equity in high vulnerability areas, could facilitate care and improve health outcomes for children with SCD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Clinical and preclinical research indicates that gastric weight loss surgeries, such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, can induce alcohol use disorder (AUD). While numerous mechanisms have been proposed for these effects, one relatively unexplored potential mechanism is physical damage to the gastric branch of the vagus nerve, which can occur during bypass surgery. Therefore, we hypothesized that direct damage to the gastric branch of the vagus nerve, without altering other aspects of gastric anatomy, could result in increased alcohol intake. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we compared alcohol intake and preference in multiple models in male Sprague-Dawley rats that received selective gastric branch vagotomy (VX) with rats who underwent sham surgery. Because the vagus nerve regulates hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function, and alterations to HPA function are critical to the escalation of non-dependent alcohol intake, we also tested the hypothesis that gastric VX increases HPA function. RESULTS: We found that VX increases alcohol intake and preference in the every-other-day, two-bottle choice test and increases preference for 1 g/kg alcohol in the conditioned place preference test. The effects were selective for alcohol, as sucrose intake and preference were not altered by VX. We also found that VX increases corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) mRNA in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN), increases putative PVN CRF neuronal action potential firing, and increases corticosterone levels. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, these findings suggest that the vagus nerve may play a critical role in regulating HPA axis function via modulation of PVN CRF mRNA expression and putative PVN CRF neuronal activity. Furthermore, disruptions to vagal regulation of HPA axis function may increase alcohol intake and preference.

OBJECTIVE: In the absence of access to surveillance system data, single-source administrative databases are often used to study health care utilization and health outcomes among people with sickle cell disease (SCD). We compared the case definitions from single-source administrative databases with a surveillance case definition to identify people with SCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used data from Sickle Cell Data Collection programs in California and Georgia (2016-2018). The surveillance case definition for SCD developed for the Sickle Cell Data Collection programs uses multiple databases, including newborn screening, discharge databases, state Medicaid programs, vital records, and clinic data. Case definitions for SCD in single-source administrative databases varied by database (Medicaid and discharge) and years of data (1, 2, and 3 years). We calculated the proportion of people meeting the surveillance case definition for SCD that was captured by each single administrative database case definition for SCD, by birth cohort, sex, and Medicaid enrollment. RESULTS: In California, 7117 people met the surveillance case definition of SCD from 2016 through 2018; 48% of this group was captured by the Medicaid case definition and 41% by the discharge case definition. In Georgia, 10 448 people met the surveillance case definition of SCD from 2016 through 2018; 45% of this group was captured by the Medicaid case definition and 51% by the discharge case definition. These proportions differed by years of data, birth cohort, and length of Medicaid enrollment. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The surveillance case definition identified twice as many people with SCD as the single-source administrative database definitions during the same period, but trade-offs exist in using single administrative databases for decisions on policy and program expansion for SCD.

Introduction: Individuals living with sickle cell disease experience high levels of morbidity that result in frequent utilization of the emergency department. The objective of this study was to provide updated national estimates of emergency department utilization associated with sickle cell disease in the U.S. Methods: Data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey for the years 1999-2020 were analyzed. Complex survey analysis was utilized to produce national estimates overall and by patient age groups. Results: On average, approximately 222,612 emergency department visits occurred annually among individuals with sickle cell disease, a nearly 13% increase from prior estimates. The annual volume of emergency department visits steadily increased over time, and pain remains the most common patient-cited reason for visiting the emergency department. Patient-reported pain levels for individuals with sickle cell disease were high, with 64% of visits associated with severe pain and 21% associated with moderate pain. Public insurance sources continue to cover most visits, with Medicaid paying for 60% of visits and Medicare paying for 12% of visits. The average time spent in the emergency department increased from previous estimates by about an hour, rising to approximately 6 hours. The average wait time to see a provider was 53 minutes. Conclusions: Utilization of the emergency department by individuals living with sickle cell disease remains high, especially for pain. With more than half of patients with sickle cell disease reporting severe pain levels, emergency department staff should be prepared to assess and treat sickle cell disease-related pain following evidence-based guidelines and recommendations. The findings of this study can help improve care in this population.

ABSTRACT

Impairments in the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and enhanced glucocorticoid receptor (GR) activity in the central amygdala (CeA) are critical mechanisms in the pathogenesis of alcohol use disorder (AUD). The GR antagonist mifepristone attenuates craving in AUD patients, alcohol consumption in AUD models, and decreases CeA γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transmission in alcohol-dependent rats. Previous studies suggest elevated GR activity in the CeA of male alcohol-preferring Marchigian-Sardinian (msP) rats, but its contribution to heightened CeA GABA transmission driving their characteristic post-dependent phenotype is largely unknown. We determined Nr3c1 (the gene encoding GR) gene transcription in the CeA in male and female msP and Wistar rats using in situ hybridization and studied acute effects of mifepristone (10 µM) and its interaction with ethanol (44 mM) on pharmacologically isolated spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) and electrically evoked inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (eIPSPs) in the CeA using ex vivo slice electrophysiology. Female rats of both genotypes expressed more CeA GRs than males, suggesting a sexually dimorphic GR regulation of CeA activity. Mifepristone reduced sIPSC frequencies (GABA release) and eIPSP amplitudes in msP rats of both sexes, but not in their Wistar counterparts; however, it did not prevent acute ethanol-induced increase in CeA GABA transmission in male rats. In msP rats, GR regulates CeA GABAergic signaling under basal conditions, indicative of intrinsically active GR. Thus, enhanced GR function in the CeA represents a key mechanism contributing to maladaptive behaviors associated with AUD.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to measure sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing among Medicaid enrollees initiating preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent human immunodeficiency virus. Secondary data are in the form of Medicaid enrollment and claims data in six states in the US South. METHODS: Research partnerships in six states in the US South developed a distributed research network to accomplish study aims. Each state identified all first-time PrEP users in fiscal year 2017-2018 (combined N = 990) and measured the presence of STI testing for chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea through 2019. Each state calculated the percentage of individuals with at least one STI test during 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up periods. RESULTS: The proportion of first-time PrEP users that received an STI test varied by state: 37% to 67% of all of the individuals in each state who initiated PrEP received a test within the first 6 months of PrEP treatment and 50% to 77% received a test within the first 12 months. CONCLUSIONS: Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends STI testing at least every 6 months for PrEP users, our analysis of Medicaid data suggests that STI testing occurs less frequently than recommended in populations at elevated risk of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) was first recognized in 1910 and identified as a genetic condition in 1949. However, there is not a universal clinical registry that can be used currently to estimate its prevalence. The Sickle Cell Data Collection (SCDC) program, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, funds state-level grantees to compile data within their states from various sources including administrative claims to identify individuals with SCD. The performance of the SCDC administrative claims case definition has been validated in a pediatric population with SCD, but it has not been tested in adults. OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study is to evaluate the discriminatory ability of the SCDC administrative claims case definition to accurately identify adults with SCD using Medicaid insurance claims data. METHODS: Our study used Medicaid claims data in combination with hospital-based medical record data from the Alabama, Georgia, and Wisconsin SCDC programs to identify individuals aged 18 years or older meeting the SCDC administrative claims case definition. In order to validate this definition, our study included only those individuals who were identified in both Medicaid's and the partnering clinical institution's records. We used clinical laboratory tests and diagnostic algorithms to determine the true SCD status of this subset of patients. Positive predictive values (PPV) are reported overall and by state under several scenarios. RESULTS: There were 1219 individuals (354 from Alabama and 865 from Georgia) who were identified through a 5-year time period. The 5-year time period yielded a PPV of 88.4% (91% for data from Alabama and 87% for data from Georgia), when only using data with laboratory-confirmed (gold standard) cases as true positives. With a narrower time period (3-year period) and data from 3 states (Alabama, Georgia, and Wisconsin), a total of 1432 individuals from these states were included in our study. The overall 3-year PPV was 89.4% (92%, 93%, and 81% for data from Alabama, Georgia, and Wisconsin, respectively) when only considering laboratory-confirmed cases as true cases. CONCLUSIONS: Adults identified as having SCD from administrative claims data based on the SCDC case definition have a high probability of truly having the disease, especially if those hospitals have active SCD programs. Administrative claims are thus a valuable data source to identify adults with SCD in a state and understand their epidemiology and health care service usage.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Population-level data on sickle cell disease (SCD) are sparse in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is addressing the need for SCD surveillance through state-level Sickle Cell Data Collection Programs (SCDC). The SCDC developed a pilot common informatics infrastructure to standardize processes across states. Materials and Methods: We describe the process for establishing and maintaining the proposed common informatics infrastructure for a rare disease, starting with a common data model and identify key data elements for public health SCD reporting. Results: The proposed model is constructed to allow pooling of table shells across states for comparison. Core Surveillance Data reports are compiled based on aggregate data provided by states to CDC annually. Discussion and Conclusion: We successfully implemented a pilot SCDC common informatics infrastructure to strengthen our distributed data network and provide a blueprint for similar initiatives in other rare diseases.

ABSTRACT

The sickle cell mutation increases morbidity in those with sickle cell disease (SCD) and potentially sickle cell trait, impacting pulmonary, coagulation, renal, and other systems that are implicated in COVID-19 severity. There are no population-based registries for hemoglobinopathies, and they are not tracked in COVID-19 testing. We used COVID-19 test data from 2 states linked to newborn screening data to estimate COVID outcomes in people with SCD or trait compared with normal hemoglobin. We linked historical newborn screening data to COVID-19 tests, hospitalization, and mortality data and modeled the odds of hospitalization and mortality. Georgia's cohort aged 0 to 12 years; Michigan's, 0 to 33 years. Over 8% of those in Michigan were linked to positive COVID-19 results, and 4% in Georgia. Those with SCD showed significantly higher rates of COVID-19 hospitalization than the normal hemoglobin Black cohort, and Michigan had higher rates of mortality as well. Outcomes among those with the trait did not differ significantly from the normal hemoglobin Black group. People with SCD are at increased risk of COVID-19-related hospitalization and mortality and are encouraged to be vaccinated and avoid infection. Persons with the trait were not at higher risk of COVID-related severe outcomes.

PURPOSE: Oncology teams are challenged by BO, which may be alleviated by meaningful recognition. In this study, firgun-altruistic acknowledgment-was implemented on a pediatric hematopoietic cell transplant unit to evaluate its impact on staff and work environment. METHODS: In this longitudinal, mixed-methods pilot study, interdisciplinary inpatient hematopoietic cell transplant providers received web-based firgun education. Electronic administration of validated surveys occurred at baseline and 8 weeks, including Perceived Stress Scale, Professional Quality of Life Scale, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Workplace Civility Index, Areas of Work Life Survey, and WHO-5. Weekly e-mails reminded participants to practice and log firgun. Wilcoxon signed test for paired data compared pre/post results. Interviews conducted at project completion were coded using MaxQDA software. RESULTS: Forty-two participants enrolled; 25 completed pre/post surveys; eight were interviewed. At study end, participants reported feeling less nervous and stressed (P = .008), and less difficulty coping (P = .01; Perceived Stress Scale), while noting increased acknowledgment of others' work (P = .04) and seeking constructive feedback (P = .04; Workplace Civility Index). Marked BO was not evident overall on the Maslach Burnout Inventory; however, emotional exhaustion subscale mean (SD) scores improved from pre (19.4 [8.6]) to post (16 [6.3; P = .02]) and individual items illustrated decreased fatigue (P = .008), frustration (P = .04), and feeling "at the end of my rope" (P = .001). Postintervention participants noted increased receipt of recognition (P = .02; Areas of Work Life Survey), decreased feeling "bogged down" (P = .02), decreased affective stress (P = .04), and negative pre-occupations (P = .04; Professional Quality of Life Scale). Qualitative analysis revealed themes of improved confidence at work and enhanced feelings of trust and teamwork. CONCLUSION: Firgun is a tool that can potentially reduce BO and stress in interdisciplinary providers, facilitate teamwork, and promote positive work environments in clinical oncology and beyond.

BACKGROUND: There have been significant changes in clinical guidelines for sickle cell disease (SCD) over the past two decades, including updated indications for hydroxyurea, transfusions, and iron overload management. In practice however, there are few studies that examine SCD care utilization over time. METHODS: We conducted a serial cross-sectional cohort study of pediatric SCD patients from 2004 to 2019 using Georgia Medicaid claims data. For each year, we reported receipt of any transfusion, chronic transfusion, or three or more filled hydroxyurea prescriptions. For children receiving chronic transfusion (six or more annual transfusions), we evaluated iron overload diagnosis, monitoring, and chelation use. Among children with sickle cell anemia (SCA), we examined rates of transfusions and hydroxyurea use. The Cochran-Armitage test was used to assess trend. RESULTS: There were 5316 unique children 2-18 years old with SCD enrolled in Georgia Medicaid from 2004 to 2019. Children receiving any transfusion increased from 2004 to 2010, then stabilized. In SCA patients, chronic transfusions initially increased from 2004 to 2010, then stabilized from 2010 to 2019. For chronically transfused children, monitoring of iron burden and filled chelator prescriptions both increased significantly. Hydroxyurea use in SCA patients increased from 12% to 37%, with increases noted within each age group, most notably from 21% to 60% in the 13-18-year-old cohort. CONCLUSION: We demonstrated changes in SCD care utilization over time, including increased hydroxyurea use, changes in transfusion rates, and increased attention to iron overload management. While trends in clinical management do follow updates in treatment guidelines, there is still delayed and suboptimal uptake of guideline recommendations in pediatric SCD patients.

Individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) have historically been considered underweight. Despite increasing body mass index (BMI) in the general population, the prevalence of overweight and obese status remains unclear in the adult SCD population. Our primary aim was to determine the prevalence of overweight and obese status and to identify associations between BMI, demographic, and clinical characteristics. We conducted an analysis of abstracted electronic health record data and patient-reported outcomes from the Sickle Cell Disease Implementation Consortium registry; individuals aged 20-45 years were included. The median (interquartile range) BMI for the 1664 adults in this analysis was 23.9 (21.1-28) kg/m2 . In this cohort, 42.9% had a BMI of >25 kg/m2 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention definition of overweight/obese). In multivariable analysis, higher odds of being overweight or obese were associated with female gender, older age, college education, private insurance, and hypertension diagnosis. Higher odds of a BMI of >25 kg/m2 were observed in individuals with HbSC or HbSß+ thalassaemia regardless of hydroxycarbamide (hydroxyurea) exposure (odds ratio [OR] 3.4, p < 0.0001) and HbSS or HbSß0 thalassaemia exposed to hydroxycarbamide (OR 1.6, p = 0.0003) compared to those with HbSS or HbSß0 thalassaemia with no hydroxycarbamide exposure. These data highlight the importance of early identification, prevention, and intervention for increasing BMI to reduce obesity-related complications that may impact SCD-related complications.

ABSTRACT

Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are common mental health issues worldwide and can lead to other chronic diseases. Stress is a major factor in the development and continuation of AUDs, and adolescent alcohol exposure can lead to enhanced stress-responsivity and increased risk for AUD development in adulthood. The exact mechanisms behind the interaction between adolescence, stress, and alcohol are not fully understood and require further research. In this regard, the nucleus of the tractus solitarius (NTS) provides dense norepinephrine projections to the extended amygdala, providing a key pathway for stress-related alcohol behaviors. While NTS norepinephrine neurons are known to be alcohol sensitive, whether adolescent alcohol disrupts NTS-norepinephrine neuron development and if this is related to altered stress-sensitivity and alcohol preference in adulthood has not previously been examined. Here, we exposed male and female C57Bl/6J mice to the commonly used adolescent intermittent ethanol (AIE) vapor model during postnatal day 28-42 and examined AIE effects on: 1) tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) mRNA expression in the NTS across various ages (postnatal day 21-90), 2) behavioral responses to acute stress in the light/dark box test in adulthood, 3) NTS TH neuron responses to acute stress and ethanol challenges in adulthood, and 4) ethanol conditioned place preference behavior in adulthood. Overall the findings indicate that AIE alters NTS TH mRNA expression and increases anxiety-like behaviors following acute stress exposure in a sex-dependent manner. These mRNA expression and behavioral changes occur in the absence of AIE-induced changes in NTS TH neuron sensitivity to either acute stress or acute alcohol exposure or changes to ethanol conditioned place preference.
