ABSTRACT

Primates are the most colourful members of the Mammalian clade. In vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus), males are characterized by their red penis and blue scrotum. Such colour signals are often used in conspecific communication, and thus could be used to convey signaller condition. We quantified scrotal and penile colour characteristics using digital photographs between May-June 2016 from males in two neighboring groups along the shores of Lake Nabugabo, Uganda. We examined the relationship between fecal hormones, male dominance rank, age (adult vs. immature), and colour. Adult males were higher ranking than immatures, but there were no rank or age differences in fecal hormone levels. Glucocorticoids and androgens were positively correlated in immature, but not adult males. All scrotal characteristics were predicted by age, with adult males having more teal (i.e., less blue, more green) and more luminant scrota. Within adult males, those with higher androgens levels had more saturated blue scrotal colouration and higher-ranking males were more luminant. Penile colouration was also associated with age and rank. High-ranking males had a more saturated red penis, and adult male penile colour was more luminant and bluer than in immature males. Our findings are consistent with previous reports that scrotal colouration advertises sexual or reproductive maturity (i.e., age), but we also find that within adult males, colour also advertises dominance rank and may be mediated by androgen levels. Penile colouration also appears to signal information about male age and dominance rank but does not appear to be mediated by hormones.

ABSTRACT

A consensus optimal therapy for large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung has not been achieved since this entity was proposed in 1991. Accumulation of clinical data and investigation, however, can be greatly impeded by erroneous cytological diagnosis, based on which treatment may be initiated. To avoid erroneous diagnoses, cytological criteria need to be defined. Twenty cases of fine-needle aspiration specimens with a diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumor by either cytology or follow-up histology were retrospectively reviewed for cytomorphologic features. Patients' clinical data were also reviewed. Three cytomorphologic patterns were identified for large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, i.e., nonsmall-cell-like, small-cell-like and, mixed nonsmall-cell-small-cell-like. Small-cell-like large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma can be mistaken for small-cell carcinoma. The most important differential features between these two entities are nuclear size and perceptibility of nucleoli of tumor cells.

ABSTRACT

When defining the mechanism of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV), investigators have employed ex vivo preparations because of the belief that accurate, quantitative assessment of pulmonary microvessels could not be obtained in vivo. We hypothesize that accurate, quantitative assessment of pulmonary microvascular reactivity can be performed using a simple, in vivo preparation. Our aim was to provide this quantitative assessment in a defined animal model, and to confirm that the chosen preparation could discriminate changes in microvascular reactivity as influenced by endogenous mediators. New Zealand rabbits were instrumented for in vivo microscopy and direct measurement of subpleural arterioles. Rabbits were first randomized to either control (n = 7) or endotoxin (n = 5), infusion of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (200 Fg/kg). All rabbits were then exposed to a repeated protocol of normoxia (21% O2) for 20 min and then hypoxia (15% O2) for 10 min over 2 h. The changes in arteriole diameter were measured at the end of each interval. Normal pulmonary arterioles repeatedly constrict 15+/-3.5% during hypoxia. Altering endogenous vasoactive mediators, as with infusion of endotoxin, caused a loss of hypoxia-induced vasoconstriction. The results of our study validate this experimental preparation for the reliable quantification of pulmonary microvascular reactivity and investigation of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction under both normal and pathologic conditions.

ABSTRACT

Post-pump syndrome is an acute lung injury following cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) which is indistinguishable from the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is central to the inflammatory process and is capable of triggering the entire pathophysiologic response leading to ARDS. We hypothesized that treatment with a soluble TNF receptor-binding protein (TNFbp) would reduce the increase in serum TNF and prevent acute lung injury in our sequential insult model of ARDS following CPB. Anesthetized pigs were randomized to one of three groups: Control (n = 3), surgical preparation only; CPB + LPS (n = 6), femoral-femoral hypothermic bypass for 1 h followed by infusion of low dose Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 1 microg/kg); and TNFbp + CPB + LPS (n = 4), pretreatment with intravenous TNFbp (2 mg/kg) followed immediately by both insults. CPB + LPS caused severe lung injury demonstrated by a significant fall in PaO2 and an increase in both intrapulmonary shunt and peak airway pressure as compared to all groups (P < 0.05). These changes were associated with a significant increase in plasma TNF level and pulmonary neutrophil sequestration. TNFbp significantly reduced plasma levels of TNF and prevented the lung injury typically observed with this ARDS model, but did not reduce pulmonary neutrophil sequestration. Thus, elevated serum TNF is not responsible for neutrophil sequestration but does play a role in neutrophil activation which causes lung injury. Prophylactic use of TNFbp in CPB patients may prevent neutrophil activation and reduce the incidence of post-pump ARDS.

ABSTRACT

Before discussing adjustments in the fees for the clinical services of industrial rehabilitation, the Medical Free Guide Committee of the Maryland Industrial Commission requested a copy of the clinical standards for these services. However, there were no multidisciplinary standards for industrial services that had state-wide approval. Therefore, a committee was formed to write the standards. Following a review of the literature and unpublished work from other associations and state organizations, standards were developed. Constructive criticism was solicited from national and local professionals and organizations with demonstrated interest and experience in providing or using these services or with experience writing standards. Further comment was solicited from individuals in the state of Maryland before final editing. Because of the dearth of outcome studies supporting the efficacy of clinical services in industrial rehabilitation, the standards describing a level of expectation from clinical services have become important for state organizations responsible for making decisions on reimbursement for clinical services. This paper summarizes the process used for the development of clinical standards of industrial rehabilitation services.

ABSTRACT

A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method has been developed to allow the determination of patulin, penicillic acid, sterigmatocystin and zearalenone in samples of cocoa beans. When this method is combined with a method that was reported earlier for the determination of ochratoxin A [W. J. Hurst and R. A. Martin, Jr., J. Chromatogr., 265 (1983) 353], it allows for the determination of five mycotoxins. Samples were extracted with an acidic acetonitrile solution, partitioned with hexane to remove fat interferences and then partitioned with chloroform to remove the toxin containing fraction. Interferences were removed by the use of a bonded phase column followed by the final HPLC determination step, which uses a cyano column with a hexane-1-propanol-acetic acid mobile phase with dual channel UV detection at 245 and 280 nm. The method exhibits good linearity, accuracy and precision.
