ABSTRACT

Mucocoeles can be defined as benign lesions that have resulted from extravasation or retention of saliva in the extraglandular spaces, and commonly affect the minor salivary glands. This case details a mucous retention cyst within the parotid gland of an infant, and its management.

ABSTRACT

Diphtheria is an infectious disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, and is generally characterised by proliferation of the bacteria in the upper respiratory tract, formation of a pseudomembrane, and systemic diffusion of the diphtheria toxin throughout the body. We present the case of a young man with pseudomembranous plaques on the tongue and floor of the mouth, who received systemic and locoregional medical treatment, with a satisfactory outcome after 14 days.

ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the psycometric properties proposed by Solano-Pinto y Cano- Vindel (2010) of the IMAGEN questionnaire. The total simple has been composed by 533 participant, 257 Mexican and 276 Spanish mean age 13,5 years (SD= 1,10). The factor structure of questionnaire has been analized through the exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. This analysis shows that a five factor structure is good. A penta- factor structure (perceptive, emotional distress, behavioral, approach to change and fear to gain weight) have been show an aceptable model fit of reliability and validity. Although the proposed model doesn´t completely match with the authors´ model of the questionnaire, the model continues to endorse the multifactorial components of the body disatisfaction, On the other hand, the factor structure, factor loading and intercepts coud be considered invariant across groups (Mexican and Spanish); however, there are differences among Mexican and Spanish adolescents in the perceptive, emotional distress, approach to change and fear to gain weight factors (AU)

ABSTRACT

While there has been considerable interest in studying ethnically diverse family caregivers, few studies have investigated the influence of dementia caregiving on Latino families. The current study includes participants from two sites of the REACH (Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health) project to compare well-being, appraisal, and religiosity by ethnicity, with specific attention to levels of acculturation. Latina (n = 191) and Caucasian female (n = 229) dementia family caregivers from two regions of the United States (Miami, Florida and Northern California) were compared at baseline on demographics, care recipient characteristics, mental and physical health, and psychosocial resources, including appraisal style and religiosity. Latina caregivers reported lower appraisals of stress, greater perceived benefits of caregiving, and greater use of religious coping than Caucasian caregivers. The relationship of these variables to level of acculturation for the Latina caregivers was also explored. Implications of these results for psychosocial interventions with Latino and Caucasian family caregivers are discussed.

ABSTRACT

By exploring the subjective experience of older people, this study investigated whether the coping framework developed with younger adults with schizophrenia could be applied to people with schizophrenia over the age of 50 years. Fifteen participants diagnosed with schizophrenia, over the age of 50, were recruited from clubhouses and given a semi-structured interview to identify what, if any, coping strategies were used to manage persistent symptoms. The results indicated that the coping strategies used by this older sample were similar to those reported by earlier studies with younger populations. However, it was reported that the efficacy of the coping strategies had increased as the participants had grown older and accepted their illness. Older adults with schizophrenia are capable of employing strategies to manage their illness and should be considered an important source of knowledge for younger individuals who struggle with the illness and for mental health professionals who work with the chronically mentally ill.
