ABSTRACT

To investigate curcumin (CUR) as the protector against the harmful effects of low-frequency electromagnetic field(LF- EMF, 50 Hz) during pregnancy period, 5 males and 15 females of Wistar rat mated and vaginal plaques were observed. Then, the pregnant rats were divided into six groups. During pregnancy(21 days), the EMF group was exposed to EMF for 30 min/day, the CUR group received a single dose of 50 mg/kg/daily CUR intraperitoneal, the EMF+CUR group was injected CUR and exposed to EMF daily. The DMSO(dimethyl sulfoxide) group was injected solvent of CUR (DMSO) intraperitoneal with the same volume of CUR solvent, the sham group was placed through the solenoid in the same conditions as the first group without exposure and the control group was kept in their cage in normal condition. After four weeks, babies born were divided according to the mother groups and sacrificed. Then, the three tissues injuries were investigated. EMF exposure led to an increase in outstanding necrotic areas in hippocampal tissue, an increase in the amount of hyperemia(p = 0.017) and necrotic(p = 0.005) in kidneys, and degeneration in liver tissue(p = 0.007) in the EMF group compared with EMF+CUR groups. A single dose of CUR daily during pregnancy can protect these tissues from injuries caused by LF-EMF exposure in rat fetuses.


Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are able to penetrate and be absorbed by the body. The researchers showed that these radiations might be harmful and lead to cancers, cardiovascular diseases, mental disorders, and fetal abnormalities. Curcumin as an active component in turmeric has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-hyperlipidemia properties. It can protect the body against diseases such as arthritis, anxiety, and metabolic syndrome. This study examined the effects of curcumin as the protector against the harmful effects of EMF (50Hz) during pregnancy period. So the pregnant rats were divided into six groups. During pregnancy, a group was exposed to EMF for 30 min/day, the second group was injected a dose of curcumin 50mg/kg/daily, the third group was injected curcumin and exposed to EMF daily. The fourth group was injected a curcumin solvent dose, the sham group was placed through the field generator in the same conditions as the first group without exposure and the control group was kept in their cage in normal condition. After four weeks, babies born were divided according to the mother groups and sacrificed. Then, the liver, kidney, and hippocampal tissues were investigated. EMF exposure led to an outstanding increase in necrotic areas in hippocampal tissue, a notable increase in the amount of hyperemia and necrosis in kidneys, and degeneration in liver tissue(p=0.007) in the EMF group compared with the third group that was exposed to EMF and received curcumin. A single dose of curcumin daily during pregnancy can protect these tissues from injuries caused by EMF(50Hz) exposure in rat fetuses.

ABSTRACT

This research aimed to assess the impact of static magnetic field (SMF) on apoptosis rate and cell cycle progression in the presence of Aloe vera Crude Extract (ACE) in normal (Huo2) and cancer cells (HeLa). The specimens were split into one untreated group (control) and two experimental groups, including treatment with ACE (Alo) and compound treatment with SMF and ACE (Alo+SMF). MTT assay determined the IC50 value, and flow cytometry was employed to evaluate cell cycle distribution and apoptosis rates. Statistical analysis was carried out through a two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test. Our results showed that combination treatment with SMF (10 mT) and ACE (Alo+SMF) significantly inhibited the cell proliferation. This increased the cell number in G2/M stage and early apoptosis in cancer cells compared to ACE treated cells after 24 and 48h but reduced the number of Huo2 cells in G2/M phase and early apoptosis after 24h. The effect of AEC on HeLa cells was intensified with increasing the SMF exposure time, such that the early apoptosis rate in Alo+SMF group had an approximate 4-fold increase compared to Alo group. This research proposes that the combination treatment accelerates the apoptosis induction of HeLa cell. During the interphase, there were significant differences between the cancer and healthy cells concerning the cell cycle. Moreover, exposure time may play an important role in the impact SMF on both healthy and cancer cells in the presence of AEC.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: There are different types of radiations, such as microwaves and mobile waves. Certain types of radiofrequency were evaluated in hydatid cyst ablation or as protoscolicidals. This study aimed to assess the influence of mobile waves on hydatid cyst protoscolices. METHODS: Hydatid cysts were collected from the slaughterhouse and transferred to the laboratory. The contents of the cysts were drained in sterile conditions and the protoscolices were rinsed three times with phosphate buffered saline. Equal volumes of protoscolex suspensions were aliquoted into similar tubes. Based on the distance of the samples from the mobile generation waves, the tubes containing the parasitic suspensions were classified into three groups, each of which was further categorised into nine subgroups according to the time of the radiation exposure. The subgroup with zero exposure time was considered the control. RESULTS: It was found that the mortality rate of the protoscolices increases as the distance of the sample from the wave-generation source decreases (p<0.0001). Increasing the time of exposure also improves the mortality rate of protoscolices. CONCLUSION: The mortality rate of protoscolices was directly proportional to the time of exposure and inversely proportional to the distance from the mobile generation waves.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We want to compare the synergistic effect of low-intensity, dual-frequency (dual) ultrasound (US), applied in a repetitive sonication mode, and acoustically active lipospheres (AALs) containing doxorubicin (DOX) in a murine model (Balb/C). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The tumor-bearing mice were divided into nine groups, namely two untreated groups (control and sham), and seven experimental groups, including treated with dual-frequency US (150 kHzcontinuous + 1MHzpulse), triple exposure (3×30min) dual-frequency US, DOX (2 mg/kg intravenous), DOX in combination with single exposure (30 min) to dual-frequency US (drug + dual), DOX in combination with triple (3 × 30 min) exposure to dual-frequency US (drug + dual [REP]), AALs containing the drug-loaded (AAL), and a group receiving AAL in combination with single exposure (30 min) dual-frequency US (AAL + dual), respectively. RESULTS: The effectiveness of DOX on tumor growth was enhanced by a factor of three when combined with the triple exposures of dual US (drug + dual [REP]). This combination protocol further increased the times needed for each tumor to 2 and 7 times its initial volume, respectively by 94% and 36% compared to the drug group. During the 30 days, following the treatment of tumors, the relative volume of tumors in AAL group was 118% less than that of the drug group. The survival rate of the groups treated with drug and AAL + dual was increased by 78.7% and 167% compared with sham, respectively. CONCLUSION: Although as a short treatment, a major improvement in treatment was observed by (drug + dual [REP]) compared with other treatments, the AAL + dual treatment compared with (drug + dual [REP]) showed an increase in the survival rates, hence more preferable over long periods.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we reported the effects of simultaneous application of static magnetic field (SMF) and cisplatin as an anticancer drug on the oxidative stress in human cervical cancer (HeLa) cell line and normal skin fibroblast cells (Hu02). The cells were exposed to different SMF intensities (7, 10, and 15 mT) for 24 and 48 h. IC50 concentrations of cisplatin were obtained by MTT assay. The cytotoxic effects of combined treatment were studied by measuring the intracellular reactive oxygen species content using flow cytometric method and estimation of membrane lipid peroxidation by spectrophotometry. Statistical analysis was assessed using one-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's test. Based on the obtained results, the highest and lowest death rate, respectively, in HeLa and Hu02 cell lines was observed at the intensity of 10 mT. Also, we found that membrane lipid peroxidation in cancer cells is higher than that of normal counterparts. SMF potently sensitized human cervical cancer cells to cisplatin through reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation while it had small effects on normal cells. The combination of both treatments for 48 h led to a marked decrease in the viability percentage of HeLa cells by about 89% compared to untreated cells. This study suggests that conjugation of both physical and chemical treatments could increase the oxidative stress in HeLa cell line and among three optional intensities of SMF, the intensity of 10 mT led to the higher damage to cancer cells in lower doses of drug.
