ABSTRACT

Five solitary squamous papillomas of bronchus with variable degrees of dysplasia, one combined with a laryngeal papilloma and with a neuroendocrine carcinoma in the contralateral lung, and five papillomas combined with invasive squamous cell carcinomas were investigated for their expression of human papilloma virus DNA by in situ hybridization. Benign squamous cell papillomas showed an association with papilloma virus type 11 and rarely type 6, whereas types 16 or 18, sometimes in combination with types 31/33/35 were found in papillomas associated with carcinomas. In one patient a benign papilloma containing human papilloma virus type 18 and 31/33/35-positive preceded a recurrence combined with carcinoma by 2 years; this recurrent papilloma and the carcinoma were also positive for human papilloma virus 18 DNA. We suggest that human papilloma virus typing should be performed in every squamous cell papilloma of bronchus. Patients with papillomas exhibiting human papilloma virus 16 or 18 positivity are at high risk for the development of squamous cell carcinoma. Furthermore, virus typing may be of prognostic importance in relation to the development of squamous carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

On the occasion of 35 episodes of oesophageal injection therapy in which partly the intravascular and partly the perivascular injection technique were used, real time sonographic measurements were performed on the veins of the portal system immediately before and after sclerotherapy. In the case of intravascular injection, both the portal and the splenic vein and the confluens of the splenic and the superior mesenteric vein showed an increase in diameter, whereas in the cases of perivascular injection such changes were minimal or absent. The practical applicability of such sonographic calibrations could possibly lie in certain conclusions that could be drawn concerning the degree of vascular compression or obliteration during each session of sclerotherapy.

ABSTRACT

Fibronectin , a glycoprotein, which is detectable in the pericellular space, can not be found on the surface of malignant transformed cells, but in the surrounding medium in a higher concentration. Which this finding, it was possible to differentiate between inflammatory and malignant genesis of pleural fluid and ascites. In the sputum and in the bronchial lavage different concentrations can be found too: In carcinomas the concentration on the average is much higher but not constant. This glycoprotein can therefore be used as a further tool in the search for neoplasms in the bronchial tree.

ABSTRACT

Serum levels of D-thyroxine (D-T4) and L-thyroxine (L-T4) were determined by use of a newly developed method for the stereospecific determination of these isomers in 8 patients with diffuse non-toxic goiter and 2 hypothyroid patients following administration of increasing doses of D-thyroxine. During the 3-day observation period a significant decrease of serum-TSH takes place. D-T4 levels are highest 4 hours after administration of the tablets and approach basal values within 24 hours in euthyroid as well as hypothyroid patients. Serum half life of D-T4 was 5.7 hours on the average in the euthyroid group and was markedly prolonged in hypothyroidism. L-T4 levels show no significant changes. Since the D-T4 preparation used, contained only very little amounts of the L-isomer, it may be assumed that D-T4 exerts a direct suppressive effect on the pituitary TSH secretion, as evidenced by the observed significant decrease in basal and TRH-stimulated TSH serum levels.
