ABSTRACT

Sargassum horneri (S. horneri), a brown seaweed excessively proliferating along Asian coastlines, are damaging marine ecosystems. Thus, this study aimed to enhance nutritional value of S. horneri through lactic acid bacteria fermentation to increase S. horneri utilization as a functional food supplement, and consequently resolve coastal S. horneri accumulation. S. horneri supplemented fermentation was most effective with Lactiplantibacillus pentosus SH803, thus this product (F-SHWE) was used for further in vitro studies. F-SHWE normalized expressions of oxidative stress related genes NF-κB, p53, BAX, cytochrome C, caspase 9, and caspase 3, while non-fermented S. horneri (SHWE) did not, in a H2O2-induced HT-29 cell model. Moreover, in an LPS-induced HT-29 cell model, F-SHWE repaired expressions of inflammation marker genes ZO1, IL1ß, IFNγ more effectively than SHWE. For further functional assessment, F-SHWE was also treated in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. As a result, F-SHWE decreased lipid accumulation, along with gene expression of adipogenesis markers PPARγ, C/EBPα, C/EBPß, aP2, and Lpl; lipogenesis markers Lep, Akt, SREBP1, Acc, Fas; inflammation markers IFN-γ and NF-κB. Notably, gene expression of C/EBPß, IFN-γ and NF-κB were suppressed only by F-SHWE, suggesting the enhancing effect of fermentation on obesity-related properties. Compositional analysis attributed the protective effects of F-SHWE to acetate, an organic acid significantly higher in F-SHWE than SHWE. Therefore, F-SHWE is a novel potential anti-obesity agent, providing a strategy to reduce excess S. horneri populations along marine ecosystems.

ABSTRACT

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a rare immune-mediated disease of childhood with putative links to microbial exposures. In this multi-center, prospective, observational cohort study, we evaluated whether JDM is associated with discrete oral and gut microbiome signatures. We generated 16S rRNA sequencing data from fecal, saliva, supragingival, and subgingival plaque samples from JDM probands (n = 28). To control for genetic and environmental determinants of microbiome community structure, we also profiled microbiomes of unaffected family members (n = 27 siblings, n = 26 mothers, and n = 17 fathers). Sample type (oral-vs-fecal) and nuclear family unit were the predominant variables explaining variance in microbiome diversity, more so than having a diagnosis of JDM. The oral and gut microbiomes of JDM probands were more similar to their own unaffected siblings than they were to the microbiomes of other JDM probands. In a sibling-paired within-family analysis, several potentially immunomodulatory bacterial taxa were differentially abundant in the microbiomes of JDM probands compared to their unaffected siblings, including Faecalibacterium (gut) and Streptococcus (oral cavity). While microbiome features of JDM are often shared by unaffected family members, the loss or gain of specific fecal and oral bacteria may play a role in disease pathogenesis or be secondary to immune dysfunction in susceptible individuals.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of subconjunctival injection of aflibercept, a soluble protein decoy for VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2, on corneal angiogenesis and VEGFR-expressing CD11b+ cells in a mouse model of suture-induced corneal neovascularization. METHODS: Corneal neovascularization was induced in BALB/c mice by placing three sutures on the cornea. Immediately after surgery, either 200 µg aflibercept (5 µL) or an equal volume of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was administered into the subconjunctival space. Seven days after later, corneal new vessels were quantified through clinical examination and measurement of the CD31-stained area in corneal flat mounts. The levels of pro-angiogenic and inflammatory markers in the cornea were evaluated using RT-qPCR. The percentages of VEGFR-2+CD11b+ cells and VEGFR-3+CD11b+ cells were analyzed in the cornea, blood, and draining cervical lymph nodes (DLNs) using flow cytometry. RESULTS: Subconjunctival injection of aflibercept significantly reduced the growth of corneal new vessels compared to subconjunctival PBS injection. The mRNA levels of Cd31, vascular growth factors (Vegfc and Angpt1), and pro-angiogenic/inflammatory markers (Tek/Tie2, Mrc1, Mrc2, and Il6) in the cornea were downregulated by subconjunctival aflibercept. Also, the percentage of VEGFR-3+CD11b+ cells in the cornea, blood, and DLNs was decreased by aflibercept, whereas that of VEGFR-2+CD11b+ cells was unaffected. CONCLUSION: Subconjunctival aflibercept administration inhibits inflammatory angiogenesis in the cornea and reduces the numbers of cornea-infiltrating and circulating VEGFR-3+CD11b+ cells.

PURPOSE: Although hook plate fixation is popularly used, concerns exist regarding periprosthetic fractures and the necessity to remove the plate to prevent subacromial erosion and subsequent acromion fracture, due to its non-anatomical design. We hypothesized that a low profile 2.7 mm distal locking hook plate would provide comparable stability to a properly used 3.5 mm distal locking hook plate MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 3.5 mm distal locking plate (type 1) and a low profile 2.7 mm plate (type 2) were assessed by finite element analysis. Peak von Mises stress (PVMS) was calculated on the acromion's undersurface, clavicle shaft, and hook, focusing on how these stresses varied with the number and placement of distal locking screws. RESULTS: Increased distal screws in both types led to lower PVMS on the acromion's undersurface and the hook, with the lowest acromion PVMS observed in type 2 with three distal screws, and on the hook in type 1 with two distal screws. Increasing the number of distal screws similarly reduced PVMS on the clavicle shaft, with the lowest in type 1 with two distal screws. In both plate types, the most posterior distal locking screw played a crucial role in distributing stress across the acromion and the hook. CONCLUSION: The low profile 2.7 mm distal locking hook plate showed comparable biomechanical results to the 3.5 mm distal locking hook plate. Increasing the number of distal locking screws showed less stress concentration on the bone and hook in both models. The most posterior distal locking screw showed an essential role in stress distribution.

ABSTRACT

Children autonomously make sound moral judgments based on internal criteria, but they tend to make erroneous judgments in the presence of social influences, and the reasons for these errors are not well understood. Thus, the current research investigated how the presence of observers who can see and listen to 3-year-old children's judgments but who do not present their opinions influences children's conformity in moral judgment behavior. In Experiment 1, the children (N = 30) were presented with pictures depicting prosocial behaviors and asked whether the behaviors were acceptable. The children's tendency to change their answers after hearing the counterintuitive opinions of informants was then measured. The results showed that the children's moral judgments were more likely to conform to that of the group in the presence of observers. Experiment 2 aimed to determine the reason children were more likely to conform to a group when being watched by observers in Experiment 1. Children (N = 30) were randomly assigned to two conditions with different observer conditions as follows. Observers were either wearing headsets, indicating that they could not hear the children's responses, or had them hanging around their necks, indicating that they could. The results showed that children's conformity behavior depended on whether observers could hear what they were saying. The current findings are expected to help elucidate not only social factors that affect children's moral judgments but also the developmental mechanism of an observer effect.

ABSTRACT

Self-powered electrical bandages (SEBs), integrated with wearable energy harvesters, can provide an effective and autonomous electrical stimulation (ES) solution for rapid and scarless wound healing. A continuously operating, wireless, and applicable-to-comprehensive-wound ES device is essential for the quick restoration of wounds and convenience. This work illustrates a SEB powered by body-coupled energy harvesting. The SEB continuously treats the wound with 60-Hz sinusoidal electrical potential gained from the coupling of the human body and ambient electrical waves. It is demonstrated that enough level of electrical potential can be applied to the wound, further enhanced by strong capacitive coupling arising from the use of high-permittivity poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene):CaCu3Ti4O12 (P(VDF-TrFE):CCTO) nanocomposite. The potential clinical efficacy of the SEB is illustrated by preclinical analysis of human fibroblasts and mouse wound model, thus confirming the successful expedition of wound recovery. This work suggests a new class of wearable devices to provide ES events and its potential for extension to other conventional wound care materials and device technology.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Little is known about alterations of the rotator cuff (RC) macroscopic vasculature associated with medical conditions and/or habits that predispose a person to diseases of the peripheral microcirculation. The high frequency of cuff tear and re-tear in patients with diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, uncontrolled arterial hypertension, or metabolic syndrome may be due to tissue hypovascularity. METHODS: The macroscopic vasculature of both the articular and bursal sides of the posterosuperior RC was evaluated arthroscopically in 107 patients (mean age, 58.2 years) with no RC tear. Patients were divided into three groups according to medical comorbidities and lifestyle factors (group I, none; group II, smokers and/or drinkers and one comorbidity; and group III, two or more comorbidities). Pulsating vessels originating from both the myotendinous and osteotendinous junctions were assessed as "clearly evident," "poorly evident," or "not evident." RESULTS: Groups I, II, and III comprised 36, 45, and 26 patients, respectively. Within the myotendinous junction, vessels were visualized in 22 group I patients (61%), 25 group II patients (55%), and 6 group III patients (23%) (P=0.007). Pulsating arterial vessels originating from the osteotendinous junction were seen in 42%, 36%, and 0% of patients, respectively (P<0.001). Within the bursal side of the RC, a dense anastomotic network was visualized (either clearly or poorly) in 94% (34), 80% (36), and 35% (9) of patients, respectively (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The macroscopic vasculature of the RC is influenced by pre-existing diseases and lifestyle factors, which may impair peripheral microcirculation. Level of evidence: III.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study sought to identify associations between the Yost Index, a geocoded area neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES) score, and race/ethnicity with patient refusal of recommended surgery for metastatic bone disease. METHODS: Patients with metastatic bone disease were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. The Yost Index was geocoded using factor analysis and categorized into quintiles using census tract-level American Community Service (ACS) 5-year estimates and seven nSES measures. Multivariable logistic regression models calculated odds ratios (ORs) of refusal of recommended surgery and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusting for clinical covariates. RESULTS: A total of 138,257 patients were included, of which 14,943 (10.8%) were recommended for surgical resection. Patients in the lowest nSES quintile had 57% higher odds of refusing surgical treatment than those in the highest quintile (aOR = 1.57, 95% CI 1.30-1.91, p < 0.001). Patients in the lowest nSES quintile also had a 31.2% higher age-adjusted incidence rate of not being recommended for surgery compared with those in the highest quintile (186.4 vs. 142.1 per 1 million, p < 0.001). Black patients had 34% higher odds of refusing treatment compared with White patients (aOR = 1.34, 95% CI 1.14-1.58, p = 0.003). Advanced age, unmarried status, and patients with aggressive cancer subtypes were associated with higher odds of refusing surgery (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: nSES and race/ethnicity are independent predictors of a patient refusing surgery for metastatic cancer to bone, even after adjusting for various clinical covariates. Effective strategies for addressing these inequalities and improving the access and quality of care of patients with a lower nSES and minority backgrounds are needed.

ABSTRACT

Wireless energy transfer (WET) based on ultrasound-driven generators with enormous beneficial functions, is technologically in progress by the valuation of ultrasonic metamaterials (UMMs) in science and engineering domains. Indeed, novel metamaterial structures can develop the efficiency of mechanical and physical features of ultrasound energy receivers (US-ETs), including ultrasound-driven piezoelectric and triboelectric nanogenerators (US-PENGs and US-TENGs) for advantageous applications. This review article first summarizes the fundamentals, classification, and design engineering of UMMs after introducing ultrasound energy for WET technology. In addition to addressing using UMMs, the topical progress of innovative UMMs in US-ETs is conceptually presented. Moreover, the advanced approaches of metamaterials are reported in the categorized applications of US-PENGs and US-TENGs. Finally, some current perspectives and encounters of UMMs in US-ETs are offered. With this objective in mind, this review explores the potential revolution of reliable integrated energy transfer systems through the transformation of metamaterials into ultrasound-driven active mediums for generators.

ABSTRACT

Neuromorphic sensors, designed to emulate natural sensory systems, hold the promise of revolutionizing data extraction by facilitating rapid and energy-efficient analysis of extensive datasets. However, a challenge lies in accurately distinguishing specific analytes within mixtures of chemically similar compounds using existing neuromorphic chemical sensors. In this study, we present an artificial olfactory system (AOS), developed through the integration of human olfactory receptors (hORs) and artificial synapses. This AOS is engineered by interfacing an hOR-functionalized extended gate with an organic synaptic device. The AOS generates distinct patterns for odorants and mixtures thereof, at the molecular chain length level, attributed to specific hOR-odorant binding affinities. This approach enables precise pattern recognition via training and inference simulations. These findings establish a foundation for the development of high-performance sensor platforms and artificial sensory systems, which are ideal for applications in wearable and implantable devices.

ABSTRACT

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by skin barrier dysfunction and chronic inflammatory responses. Reynoutria japonica, known as Huzhang in traditional Chinese Medicine, can enhance blood circulation to eliminate wind pathogens and terminate coughing. Despite pharmacological evidence supporting the efficacy of R. japonica in suppressing edema-induced skin inflammation or connective tissue diseases, its pharmaceutical potential for treating AD-like skin inflammation remains unexplored. This study investigated the possible effects of R. japonica ethanol extract (RJE) on Dermatophagoides farinae extract (DfE)-induced AD-like skin inflammation in NC/Nga mice. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms by which RJE inhibits skin inflammation, we examined the effect of RJE on IFN-γ/TNF-α-induced signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) signaling in human epidermal keratinocytes (HEKs) and human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). Our findings revealed that RJE mitigates DfE-induced AD-like symptoms and skin barrier disruptions in mouse skin lesions. Moreover, RJE attenuated DfE-induced mast cell infiltration and serum levels of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1α, IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-23, IFN-γ, TNF-α, and GM-CSF). RJE also inhibited IFN-γ/TNF-α-induced chemokine levels and STAT3 phosphorylation in HEKs and HDFs. Virtual binding analysis of the RJE components suggested that emodin-8-ß-D-glucoside binds to Janus kinase (JAK) 1/2, thereby suppressing STAT signaling, which was confirmed by Western blot analysis. In conclusion, our results suggest that RJE may alleviate DfE-induced skin barrier dysfunction by inhibiting JAK/STAT signaling and the proinflammatory immune response through the suppression of inflammatory mediators in AD-like skin disease. These findings suggest that RJE has potential as an effective therapy for AD management.

ABSTRACT

To learn new words, particularly verbs, child learners have been shown to benefit from the linguistic contexts in which the words appear. However, cross-linguistic differences affect how this process unfolds. One previous study found that children's abilities to learn a new verb differed across Korean and English as a function of the sentence in which the verb occurred (Arunachalam et al., 2013). The authors hypothesized that the properties of word order and argument drop, which vary systematically in these two languages, were driving the differences. In the current study, we pursued this finding to ask if the difference persists later in development, or if children acquiring different languages come to appear more similar as their linguistic knowledge and learning capacities increase. Preschool-aged monolingual English learners (N = 80) and monolingual Korean learners (N = 64) were presented with novel verbs in contexts that varied in word order and argument drop and accompanying visual stimuli. We assessed their learning by measuring accuracy in a forced-choice pointing task, and we measured eye gaze during the learning phase as an indicator of the processes by which they mapped the novel verbs to meaning. Unlike previous studies which identified differences between English and Korean learning 2-year-olds in a similar task, our results revealed similarities between the two language groups with these older preschoolers. We interpret our results as evidence that over the course of early childhood, children become adept at learning from a larger variety of contexts, such that differences between learners of different languages are attenuated.

Group III-nitride semiconductors with tubular structures offer significant potential across various applications, including optics, electronics, and chemical sensors. However, achieving tailored fabrication of these structures remains a challenge. In this study, we present a novel, to the best of our knowledge, method to fabricate micro-sized tubular structures by rolling the layered membrane of group III-nitride alloys utilizing the photoelectrochemical (PEC) etching. To customize the geometry of the tubular structure, we conducted an analytic calculation to predict the strain and deformation for the layered membrane. Based on the calculations, we designed and fabricated an AlGaN/GaN/InGaN/n-GaN/ sapphire structure using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Photolithography and PEC etching were employed to selectively etch the sacrificial InGaN layer. We investigated the changes of optical properties of the rolled-up structure by utilizing micro-photoluminescence (µ-PL) and micro-Raman spectroscopy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The dicentric chromosome assay (DCA), often referred to as the 'gold standard' in radiation dose estimation, exhibits significant challenges as a consequence of its labor-intensive nature and dependency on expert knowledge. Existing automated technologies face limitations in accurately identifying dicentric chromosomes (DCs), resulting in decreased precision for radiation dose estimation. Furthermore, in the process of identifying DCs through automatic or semi-automatic methods, the resulting distribution could demonstrate under-dispersion or over-dispersion, which results in significant deviations from the Poisson distribution. In response to these issues, we developed an algorithm that employs deep learning to automatically identify chromosomes and perform fully automatic and accurate estimation of diverse radiation doses, adhering to a Poisson distribution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The dataset utilized for the dose estimation algorithm was generated from 30 healthy donors, with samples created across seven doses, ranging from 0 to 4 Gy. The procedure encompasses several steps: extracting images for dose estimation, counting chromosomes, and detecting DC and fragments. To accomplish these tasks, we utilize a diverse array of artificial neural networks (ANNs). The identification of DCs was accomplished using a detection mechanism that integrates both deep learning-based object detection and classification methods. Based on these detection results, dose-response curves were constructed. A dose estimation was carried out by combining a regression-based ANN with the Monte-Carlo method. RESULTS: In the process of extracting images for dose analysis and identifying DCs, an under-dispersion tendency was observed. To rectify the discrepancy, classification ANN was employed to identify the results of DC detection. This approach led to satisfaction of Poisson distribution criteria by 32 out of the initial pool of 35 data points. In the subsequent stage, dose-response curves were constructed using data from 25 donors. Data provided by the remaining five donors served in performing dose estimations, which were subsequently calibrated by incorporating a regression-based ANN. Of the 23 points, 22 fell within their respective confidence intervals at p < .05 (95%), except for those associated with doses at levels below 0.5 Gy, where accurate calculation was obstructed by numerical issues. The accuracy of dose estimation has been improved for all radiation levels, with the exception of 1 Gy. CONCLUSIONS: This study successfully demonstrates a high-precision dose estimation method across a general range up to 4 Gy through fully automated detection of DCs, adhering strictly to Poisson distribution. Incorporating multiple ANNs confirms the ability to perform fully automated radiation dose estimation. This approach is particularly advantageous in scenarios such as large-scale radiological incidents, improving operational efficiency and speeding up procedures while maintaining consistency in assessments. Moreover, it reduces potential human error and enhances the reliability of results.

ABSTRACT

Microbial communities in nature are dynamically evolving as member species change their interactions subject to environmental variations. Accounting for such context-dependent dynamic variations in interspecies interactions is critical for predictive ecological modeling. In the absence of generalizable theoretical foundations, we lack a fundamental understanding of how microbial interactions are driven by environmental factors, significantly limiting our capability to predict and engineer community dynamics and function. To address this issue, we propose a novel theoretical framework that allows us to represent interspecies interactions as an explicit function of environmental variables (such as substrate concentrations) by combining growth kinetics and a generalized Lotka-Volterra model. A synergistic integration of these two complementary models leads to the prediction of alterations in interspecies interactions as the outcome of dynamic balances between positive and negative influences of microbial species in mixed relationships. The effectiveness of our method was experimentally demonstrated using a synthetic consortium of two Escherichia coli mutants that are metabolically dependent (due to an inability to synthesize essential amino acids) but competitively grow on a shared substrate. The analysis of the E. coli binary consortium using our model not only showed how interactions between the two amino acid auxotrophic mutants are controlled by the dynamic shifts in limiting substrates but also enabled quantifying previously uncharacterizable complex aspects of microbial interactions, such as asymmetry in interactions. Our approach can be extended to other ecological systems to model their environment-dependent interspecies interactions from growth kinetics.IMPORTANCEModeling environment-controlled interspecies interactions through separate identification of positive and negative influences of microbes in mixed relationships is a new capability that can significantly improve our ability to understand, predict, and engineer the complex dynamics of microbial communities. Moreover, the prediction of microbial interactions as a function of environmental variables can serve as valuable benchmark data to validate modeling and network inference tools in microbial ecology, the development of which has often been impeded due to the lack of ground truth information on interactions. While demonstrated against microbial data, the theory developed in this work is readily applicable to general community ecology to predict interactions among macroorganisms, such as plants and animals, as well as microorganisms.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This work aimed to identify a method to achieve improved stone targeting and safety in shockwave lithotripsy by accounting for respiration. METHODS: We set up an electromotive device simulating renal movement during respiration to place artificial stones within the phantom gel, measuring stone weight changes before and after shockwave exposure and the cavitation damage. We conducted clinical trials using respiratory masks and sensors to monitor and analyze patient respiration during shockwave lithotripsy. RESULTS: The in vitro efficiency of lithotripsy was higher when adjusted for respiration than when respiration was not adjusted for. Slow respiration showed the best efficiency with higher hit rates when not adjusted for respiration. Cavitation damage was also lowest during slow respiration. The clinical study included 52 patients. Respiratory regularity was maintained above 90% in regular respiration. When respiration was regular, the lithotripsy rate was about 65.6%, which stayed at about 40% when respiration was irregular. During the lithotripsy, the participants experienced various events, such as sleep, taking off their masks, talking, movement, coughing, pain, nervousness, and hyperventilation. The generation of shockwaves based on respiratory regularity could reduce pain in patients. CONCLUSION: These results suggest a more accurate lithotripsy should be performed according to respiratory regularity.

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded study. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of intraoperative epidural administration of Depo-Medrol on postoperative back pain and radiculitis symptoms in patients undergoing Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Postoperative pain is commonly experienced by patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery. Adequate management of intense pain is necessary to encourage early ambulation, increase patient satisfaction, and limit opioid consumption. Intraoperative steroid application has been shown to improve postoperative pain in patients undergoing lumbar decompression surgeries. There have been no studies examining the effect of epidural steroids on both back pain and radicular pain in patients undergoing TLIF. METHOD: In all, 151 patients underwent TLIF surgery using rh-BMP2 with 3 surgeons at a single institution. Of those, 116 remained in the study and were included in the final analysis. Based on a 1:1 randomization, a collagen sponge saturated with either Saline (1 cc) or Depo-Medrol (40 mg/1 cc) was placed at the annulotomy site on the TLIF level. Follow-up occurred on postoperative days 1, 2, 3, 7, and postoperative months 1, 2, and 3. Lumbar radiculopathy was measured by a modified symptom- and laterality-specific Visual Analog Scale (VAS) regarding the severity of back pain and common radiculopathy symptoms. RESULTS: The patients who received Depo-Medrol, compared with those who received saline, experienced significantly less back pain on postoperative days 1, 2, 3, and 7 (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in back pain beyond day 7. Radiculopathy-related symptoms such as leg pain, numbness, tingling, stiffness, and weakness tended to be reduced in the steroid group at most time points. CONCLUSION: This study provides Level 1 evidence that intraoperative application of Depo-Medrol during a TLIF surgery with rh-BMP2 significantly reduces back pain for the first week after TLIF surgery. The use of epidural Depo-Medrol may be a useful adjunct to multimodal analgesia for pain relief in the postoperative period.

ABSTRACT

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella enterica serovar Agona infections affect public health globally. This investigation aimed to ascertain the antimicrobial resistance profiles and molecular characteristics of Salmonella Agona isolates obtained from food-producing animals. A total of 209 Salmonella Agona isolates were recovered from mostly chickens (139 isolates), pigs (56 isolates), cattle (11 isolates), and ducks (3 isolates) between 2010 and 2020 in South Korea. In addition, these Salmonella Agona isolates were obtained from 25 slaughterhouses nationwide. Furthermore, this serotype suddenly increased in chickens in 2020. Salmonella Agona from chickens showed high resistance (69-83%) to ampicillin, streptomycin, tetracycline, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and chloramphenicol. Moreover, chicken/duck isolates (83.1%) showed significantly higher levels of MDR than cattle/pig isolates (1.5%). For molecular analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, infrared spectroscopy biotyping, and multilocus sequence typing in combination, a total of 23 types were observed. Especially two major types, P1-III-2-13 and P1-IV-2-13, comprised 59.3% of the total isolates spreading in most farms. Moreover, Salmonella Agona sequence type (ST)13 was predominant (96.7%) among three different STs (ST13, ST11, and ST292) widely detected in chickens (94.3%) in most farms located nationwide. Taken together, MDR Salmonella Agona in chickens might pose a potential risk to public health through direct contact or the food chain.

BACKGROUND: Even though arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is recognized as a standard treatment option, the risk of postoperative retear is a major concern. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of porcine-derived absorbable patch-type atelocollagen during arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1. METHODS: A total of 64 patients with rotator cuff tears diagnosed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were enrolled prospectively from November 2020 to December 2021. Both groups had repairs using the suture bridge technique. For the atelocollagen group, before securing the lateral anchors, we inserted porcine-derived absorbable patch-type atelocollagen between the footprint and the tendon. On postoperative day 2, the patients underwent MRI to confirm containment of the patch-type atelocollagen. At 6 months and 1 year postoperatively, the signal intensity of the repaired tendon was assessed using MRI. Patients were evaluated using the Constant score as the primary outcome, along with the visual analog scale for pain; range of motion; American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score; University of California, Los Angeles, score; and Korean Shoulder Score preoperatively and at 2, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: No significant changes in the Constant score as primary outcome, pain or other functional scores, and range of motion were observed between the groups at 1 year postoperatively. The patch-type atelocollagen was confirmed to be contained by the time-zero MRI scan taken 2 days postoperatively. Among the 55 patients included in final analysis, 12 retear cases were recorded (21.8% retear rate). A significantly lower retear rate was found in the atelocollagen group, as 3 cases were observed in this group (10.3%) and 9 cases were observed in the conventional repair group (34.6%) (P = .048). CONCLUSION: The Constant score was not different between the groups. The retear rate after rotator cuff repair was significantly lower in the group that received porcine-derived absorbable patch-type atelocollagen compared with in the conventional group. BACKGROUND: Accurate quantification of the BCR::ABL1 transcripts is essential for measurable residual disease (MRD) monitoring in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) after tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment. This study evaluated the newly developed digital real-time PCR method, Dr. PCR, as an alternative reverse transcription-PCR (qRT-PCR) for MRD detection. METHODS: The performance of Dr. PCR was assessed using reference and clinical materials. Precision, linearity, and correlation with qRT-PCR were evaluated. MRD levels detected by Dr. PCR were compared with qRT-PCR, and practical advantages were investigated. RESULTS: Dr. PCR detected MRD up to 0.0032%IS (MR4.5) with excellent precision and linearity and showed a strong correlation with qRT-PCR results. Notably, Dr. PCR identified higher levels of MRD in 12.7% (29/229) of patients than qRT-PCR, including six cases of MR4, which is a critical level for TKI discontinuation. Dr. PCR also allowed for sufficient ABL1 copies in all cases, while qRT-PCR necessitated multiple repeat tests in 3.5% (8/229) of cases. CONCLUSION: Our study provides a body of evidence supporting the clinical application of Dr. PCR as a rapid and efficient method for assessing MRD in patients with CML under the current treatment regimen.
