ABSTRACT

The Asociación Mexicana de Hepatología A.C. carried out the Consensus on the Management of Complications of Cirrhosis of the Liver in Pediatrics to provide physicians with useful information for treating said complications. A group of pediatric gastroenterologists and experts in nutrition, nephrology, and infectious diseases participated and reviewed the medical literature. The Delphi method was applied to obtain the level of agreement on the statements that were formulated. The statements were sent to the participants to be analyzed and voted upon, after which they were discussed in virtual sessions, and the final versions were produced. The aim of the consensus results was to issue indications for the management of pediatric patients with liver cirrhosis, to prevent or control complications.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of varying intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels during oocyte in vitro maturation with enzymatic ROS production systems (xanthine + xanthine oxidase or xanthine + xanthine oxidase + catalase), scavenger systems (catalase or superoxide dismutase + catalase) or cysteine on porcine oocyte maturation. Oocyte ROS levels showed an increase when H2O2 or O2∙(-) production systems were added to the culture medium (p < 0.05). On the other hand, the presence of ROS scavengers in the maturation medium did not modify oocyte ROS levels compared with the control after 48 h of maturation, but the addition of cysteine induced a decrease in oocyte ROS levels (p < 0.05). The ROS production systems used in this work did not modified the percentage of oocyte nuclear maturation, but increased the decondensation of sperm head (p < 0.05) and decreased the pronuclear formation (p < 0.05). In turn, the addition of O2∙(-) and H2O2 scavenging systems during in vitro maturation did not modify the percentage of oocytes reaching metaphase II nor the oocytes with decondensed sperm head or pronuclei after fertilization. However, both parameters increased in the presence of cysteine (p < 0.05). The exogenous generation of O2∙(-) and H2O2 during oocyte in vitro maturation would not affect nuclear maturation or later sperm penetration, but most of the spermatozoa cannot progress to form the pronuclei after fusion with the oocyte. The decrease in endogenous ROS levels by the addition of cysteine would improve pronuclear formation after sperm penetration.

ABSTRACT

Investigam-se os avanços de inovações incluídas na reestruturação curricular da Faculdade de Serviço Social da Universidade de Colima, a partir da introdução de novas modalidades pedagógicas no currículo. Considera-se a importância de que, na formação de trabalhadores sociais, estes sejam vistos como atores sociais que participam da resolução de problemas da sociedade. Neste sentido, o corpo acadêmico da Faculdade analisou o processo e os resultados da implemantação de um modelo de ensino centrado no aluno no período de 2001 a 2005, para sustentar a reestruturação curricular. Resultados obtidos confirmam a pertinência dos modelos adotados e indicam algumas exigências para consolidação das inovações curriculares implementadas.

ABSTRACT

Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were sampled in March 1996 from five stations along the Western Mediterranean coast (Barcelona, Ebro Delta, Alboraya, Cullera, Denia) corresponding to urban, industrial and agricultural areas. Different biochemical and cellular markers were determined in the mussels in order to assess the effects and/or exposure to pollutants. The cytochrome P450 system, acetylcholinesterase and metallothioneins were among the biochemical markers selected for the study. Histochemical analysis of ß-glucuronidase and catalase activity were performed as marker enzymes for lysosomes and peroxisomes. Chemical analyses indicated that mussels from Barcelona and Denia as highly exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)(1.8-2.7 µg g(-1) w.w. against 0.02-0.10 µg g(-1) w.w.), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)(132-260 ng g(-1) w.w. against 8-24 ng g(-1) w.w.). This was in agreement with changes in lysosome structure and higher number of peroxisomes in those organisms. High levels of metals (particularly Cr and Cu) were recorded in the digestive gland of Alboraya mussels, which also had elevated metallothionein content (28 nmol g(-1) w.w.) in comparison with the other stations (15-20 nmol g(-1) w.w.). Benzo(a)pyrene hydroxylase (BPH) activity indicated Cullera and Barcelona as possibly polluted sites. The results support the usefulness of the biomarker approach to assess and diagnose environmental pollution. The use of a battery of biomarkers at different levels of biological organization coupled with chemical analysis is highlighted.
