ABSTRACT

To evaluate the effect of 1100 ppm F toothpastes supplemented with micrometric or nanosized ß-CaGP (ß-CaGPm/ß-CaGPn) on artificial enamel remineralization, using a pH cycling model. Enamel blocks with artificial caries were randomly allocated into ten groups (n = 10), according to the toothpastes: without fluoride/ß-CaGPm/ß-CaGPn (negative control); 1100 ppm F (1100F); 1100F plus 0.125%, 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1.0% of ß-CaGPm or ß-CaGPn. The blocks were treated 2×/day with slurries of toothpastes. After pH cycling, the percentage of surface hardness recovery (%SHR); integrated loss of subsurface hardness (ΔKHN); integrated mineral loss (ΔIMR); fluoride (F), calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P) concentrations in the enamel; polydispersity index (PdI); and zeta potential (Zp) were determined. The data were analyzed by ANOVA (p < 0.001). For Zp/PdI, no significance was observed when comparing the means (p > 0.001). The treatment with 1100F-0.25%ß-CaGPn led to %SHR ∼57 higher when compared to the 1100F group (p < 0.001). The lowest ΔKHN was observed for the 1100F-0.25%ß-CaGPn group (p < 0.001). The ΔIMR was lower (∼201%) for the 1100F-0.25%ß-CaGPn when compared to 1100F (p < 0.001). The association of ß-CaGPm and ß-CaGPn to 1100F did not influence its F concentration (p > 0.001). The highest increase in Ca and P was observed for 1100F-0.25%ß-CaGPn (p < 0.001). The addition of 0.25%ß-CaGPn to 1100F toothpaste was able to promote an additional remineralizing effect of artificial caries lesions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether a master and PhD thesis in Brazilian graduate programs in dentistry can be based on a systematic review (SR). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we surveyed the coordinators of Brazilian graduate programs in dentistry using a self-administered questionnaire including questions about whether an SR meets requirements for approval of a master or PhD thesis, instructions regarding how to use an SR as the method for a master or PhD thesis, and reasons and barriers that SRs were not recognized as acceptable for a master or PhD thesis. The responses were analyzed descriptively, and tables and graphs were created to summarize the data. RESULTS: Among 101 graduate programs invited to participate in the study, 38 (37.6%) returned the questionnaire. Over three-quarters of surveyed programs (n = 30, 78.1%) answered that SRs, in whole or in part, meet the criteria for a master or PhD thesis. Likewise, most programs answered that a master or PhD thesis could be exclusively based on an SR (n = 28, 73.7%). The same number of programs pointed out that one possible reason for not recognizing SRs as a master or PhD thesis is either the lack of SR expertise among committee members (n = 28, 73.7%) or the lack of adequate training of candidates in SR methodology (n = 26, 68.4%). CONCLUSIONS: SRs are well accepted as a master or PhD thesis by Brazilian graduate programs in dentistry. Educational initiatives should be encouraged to promote understanding of SR methodology and increase acceptance among graduate programs worldwide.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The changes that occur in the process of odontogenesis are called dental anomalies and are classified according to form as twinning, fusion, concrescence, laceration, claw cusp, dens in dente, taurodontia, micro and macrodontia, the number: teeth or agenesis and supernumerary roots and the position as transmigration or ectopic. Objective: To determine the prevalence of dental anomalies radiographs records of patients seen at the clinic of a private education institution. Material and Methods: Analysis of 300 panoramic radiographs in light box illuminated by two fluorescent lamps of 20 watts each, coated with black mask, with a central opening where the measuring 15x30cm panoramic film was set, held in dark, with the aid of magnifying (2X increase) and interpreted jointly by two calibrated observers. The radiographic findings were recorded in the table itself, consisting chart number, gender, presence of dental anomalies and changes in shape, number and position. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed by calculating the frequency and percentage of involvement and relationships between gender and dental abnormalities found. Results: Occurrence of lacerations ( 3.32% ) , conical teeth (1%) , taurodontia ( 0.66% ) in tooth dens (0.33 %) and peak claw (5.66 %) in relation to size abnormalities were observed microdontia (5.33 %), the occurrence position disorders such as ectopic eruption (0.33%) and number of cases of changes teeth (4.32%) and roots supernumerary (0.66 % ), without statistical differences between genders. Conclusion: The prevalence of anatomical variations in permanent teeth is low, but not rare, without gender distinction, but to induce clinical significance, in some situations, the pulp involvement or hinder dental therapies.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated in vitro the influence of an eugenol-based sealer (EndoFill) on the retention of stainless steel prefabricated posts cemented with zinc phosphate and resin-based (Panavia F) cements after different periods of root canal obturation, using the pull-out test. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty upper canines were decoronated and the roots were embedded in resin blocks. The specimens were distributed into 3 groups, according to the period elapsed between canal obturation and post cementation: Group I - immediately; Group II - 72 h and Group III - 4 months. The groups were subdivided according to the type of cement used for post cementation: A - zinc phosphate and B - Panavia F. Following the experimental periods, specimens were subjected to pullout test in an Instron machine with application of tensile force at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min until post dislodgement. The maximum forces required for post removal were recorded (kN) and means were subjected to statistical analysis by 2-way ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer test (á=0.001) RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences (p<0.01) between the posts cemented with zinc phosphate cement (0.2112 kN) and Panavia F (0.0501 kN). However, no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) were found between the three post cementation periods, regardless of the cement. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that the eugenol-based sealer influenced the tensile strength of the posts cemented with the resin cement, but had no influence on the time waited between root canal obturation and post space preparation/post cementation.
