ABSTRACT

A primary lymphoma in the central nervous system in a 10 year-old Labrador Retriever presenting seizures, hind limb incoordination, head tilt, ataxia and decreased sensitivity on the left side was reported. Regarding postural reactions, there were changes in the left side such as proprioceptive and tactile positioning defects, and in the posterior reaction tests such as wheelbarrowing and limb hopping, along with a reduction in the extensor postural thrust reaction and hemi-walking response. A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis showed a predominance of atypical lymphocytes characterized by pleocytosis, marked anisocytosis and anisokaryosis, evident nucleoli and anisonucleosis, cytoplasmic basophilia and microvacuolation, atypical mitotic figures and lymphoglandular bodies. These findings were compatible with lymphoma, which was confirmed by histopathology and immunocytochemistry that showed a T-cell origin, with CD3 + and CD79- expression. A computed tomography scan was inconclusive and showed several hypodense areas and a contrast enhancement in the sulci and gyri region of the brain parenchyma. The CSF analysis was essential for a quicker definitive diagnosis, indicating the nature of this rare primary injury.

ABSTRACT

Dry beans are considered to be a crop of great socio-economic importance, because they are an inexpensive source of nutrients and because their cultivation requires considerable manual labor. Studies of genetic diversity have been very important for genetic improvement programs, because they give parameters for the identification of genitors that can provide large heterosis effects and improved segregation in recombinants, increasing the probability of obtaining superior genotypes in the progeny. We evaluated the genetic diversity of 57 dry bean accessions, including 31 local accessions, propagated by small-scale farmers, 20 accessions supplied by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Agency, and six commercial accessions, using 16 microsatellite primers. Among these primers, 13 were found to be polymorphic, giving 29 polymorphic alleles. The largest number of alleles per locus was observed for primer BM141, which had four alleles. The polymorphic information content varied from 0.11 to 0.51, observed for loci BM212 and BM141, respectively. The lowest degree of dissimilarity (0.0) was found between the accession Iapar 81 and the accessions E03, E04, E09, and E13 and between the accession pairs E08 with E16 and Iapar 31 with E06. The highest degree of dissimilarity was found between the accessions Carioca and E22 (1.0). Grouping analysis revealed four groups, according to the place of origin. This tendency was also found in the principal coordinate analysis. The local genotypes were found to have relatively high genetic diversity, while the EMBRAPA and commercial cultivars had a relatively narrow genetic basis.

ABSTRACT

The search for esthetic and fast procedures has been growing in dental offices. The adhesive dentistry has been improved for the development of several adhesive cementation techniques and systems for indirect restorations type inlay and onlay. This paper presents a petient M.F clinical report about the substitution of defective amalgam restorations in dental elements 24, 25 and 26 by indirect restorations type inlay, confectioned indirectly with P-60 (3M/ESPE) composite resin. The Relix Unicem (3M/ESPE) cement was used. It is an innovative and dual cure material, a self-etching resinous cement. The technique sequences to dental remainders preparation and to the prostheses confection and their cementation were described. It was observed that, although recently launched in the market, the resinous cement is important because it minimizes the clinical time of cementation indirect restorations in posterior teeth.

ABSTRACT

SETTING: Central Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. OBJECTIVE: To compare the impact of routine DOTS vs. enhanced DOTS (DOTS-Ampliado or DOTS-A) on tuberculosis (TB) incidence. DESIGN: Cluster-randomized trial in eight urban neighborhoods pair-matched by TB incidence and randomly assigned to receive either the DOTS-A or DOTS strategy. DOTS-A added intensive screening of household contacts of active TB cases and provision of treatment to secondary cases and preventive therapy to contacts with latent TB infection (LTBI) to the standard DOTS strategy. The primary endpoint was the TB incidence rates in communities after 5 years of intervention. RESULTS: From November 2000 to December 2004, respectively 339 and 311 pulmonary TB cases were enrolled and 1003 and 960 household were identified in DOTS and DOTS-A communities. Among contacts from DOTS-A communities, 26 (4%) had active TB diagnosed and treated, 429 (61.3%) had LTBI detected and 258 (60.1%) started preventive therapy. TB incidence increased by 5% in DOTS communities and decreased by 10% in DOTS-A communities, for a difference of 15% after 5 years (P = 0.04). CONCLUSION: DOTS-A was associated with a modest reduction in TB incidence and may be an important strategy for reducing the burden of TB.

ABSTRACT

We studied the karyotype, spermatogenesis and nucleolar activity at spermatogenesis in five species of Heteropera: Hyalymenus sp and Neomegalotomus pallescens, Alydidae; Catorhintha guttula and Hypselonotus fulvus, Coreidae; and Niesthrea sidae, Rhopalidae. They showed a red (Alydidae) or orange (Coreidae and Rhopalidae) membrane covering the testes, which consisted of seven testicular lobes, except in N. pallescens, which had only five. All the species had m-chromosomes, an X0 sex chromosome system and 10 (Hyalymenus sp, N. pallescens, and N. sidae), 16 (H. fulvus) or 22 (C. guttula) autosomes. Similar to the other species described to date, all these species showed holocentric chromosomes, interstitial chiasmata in most autosomes, and autosomes dividing reductionally in the first meiotic division and equationally in the second, while sex chromosomes, divided equationally and reductionally in the first and second meiotic divisions, respectively. In addition, we observed that the sex chromosome is heteropycnotic at prophase and that heteropycnotic chromosomal material is found in the nuclei at spermatogenesis; variation in size, shape and location of the nucleolar material occurs during spermatogenesis, denoting a variable degree of activity in the different stages.
