ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Hyptis pectinata (L.) Poit., Lamiaceae, popularly known as "sambacaitá," is an aromatic shrub largely grown in the Brazilian northeastern. We investigated the antinociceptive effects of the ethyl acetate fraction obtained from the leaves of H. pectinata and of its main constituent rosmarinic acid, on formalin (2%)-, glutamate (25 µM)- and capsaicin (2.5 µg)-induced orofacial nociception in rodents. Male mice were pretreated with ethyl acetate fraction (100, 200 or 400 mg/kg, p.o.), rosmarinic acid (10 or 20 mg/kg, p.o.), morphine (5 mg/kg, i.p.), or vehicle (distilled water + 0.2% Tween 80). Ethyl acetate fraction reduced the nociceptive face-rubbing behavior during the two phase of the formalin test, whereas pretreatment with rosmarinic acid decreased the pain behavior in the second phase. Ethyl acetate fraction produced significant antinociceptive effects in the capsaicin and glutamate tests. This study showed that oral administration of ethyl acetate fraction produced potent antinociceptive effects compared to treatment with rosmarinic acid.

ABSTRACT

Libidibia ferrea is a typical plant of northern and north-east Brazil and has well-known medicinal properties that can be found in ethanolic extracts such as antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic compounds. This study seeks to evaluate the potential antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of ethanol extracts from Libidibia ferrea pods. The pods were used for the preparation of ethanolic extracts of L. ferrea which is used to determine biological activity, and measure their total phenolic content. For quantification of antioxidant methods of DPPH, ABTS and ß-carotene were employed and the method of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) to measure the antimicrobial activity. The ethanolic extract of L. ferrea showed excellent antioxidant activity, as well as other similar substances commonly used for this purpose such as citric acid and trolox. In addition, it had antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Hyptis pectinata, popularly known in Brazil as "sambacaitá" or "canudinho," is an aromatic shrub largely grown in the northeast of Brazil. The leaves and bark are used in an infusion for the treatment of throat and skin inflammations, bacterial infections, pain, and cancer. Analogues of rosmarinic acid and flavonoids were obtained from the leaves of Hyptis pectinata and consisted of two new compounds, sambacaitaric acid (1) and 3-O-methyl-sambacaitaric acid (2), and nine known compounds, rosmarinic acid (3), 3-O-methyl-rosmarinic acid (4), ethyl caffeate (5), nepetoidin A (6), nepetoidin B (7), cirsiliol (8), circimaritin (9), 7-O-methylluteolin (10), and genkwanin (11). The structures of these compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods. Compounds 1-5, and 7 were evaluated in vitro against the promastigote form of L. braziliensis, and the ethanol extract. The hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol-water fractions were also evaluated. The EtOH extract, the hexane extract, EtOAc, MeOH:H2O fractions; and compounds 1, 2 and 4 exhibited antileishmanial activity, and compound 1 was as potent as pentamidine. In contrast, compounds 3, 5, and 7 did not present activity against the promastigote form of L. braziliensis below 100 µM. To our knowledge, compounds 1 and 2 are being described for the first time.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to characterize the fruit fly populations in three municipalities of the Northern region and two municipalities of the Northwestern region of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, and to evaluate the similarity among their populations. A faunistic analysis was performed from the fruit fly specimens captured in plastic McPhail traps with an aqueous solution of hydrolyzed protein to 5% placed in orchards of guava (Psidium guajava L.) and/or other fruits during 26 months. The total of 3,952 females of 15 species of Anastrepha Schiner and 277 females of Ceratitis capitata (Wied.) was captured. The species richness differed among the municipalities, with the highest value in São Francisco do Itabapoana (S = 14), resulting on the highest Shannon-Wiener index (H = 1.27). The equitability was low in the five municipalities due to the dominance of one unique fruit fly species. The predominant species (more frequent, constant and dominant) were Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) in Campos dos Goytacazes and São Francisco do Itabapoana, Anastrepha fraterculus (Wied.) in Cambuci and Itaocara, and Anastrepha sororcula Zucchi in São João da Barra. Fruit fly populations had low diversity index of Margalef (alpha = 0.58 to 1.82). Regarding to fruit fly species composition, the populations in São João da Barra and Cambuci were more similar between each other, composing a distinct group from the populations in Campos dos Goytacazes and Itaocara. These two groups differed quite a lot from the population in São Francisco do Itabapoana.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The infestation indices by fruit flies were determined for six cultivars of Coffea arabica L. in shaded and unshaded systems under organic management. The experiment was set in a completely randomized design with a split-split-plot arrangement and four replicates. A 250g-sample of maturing fruits per plot was harvested in May 2005. The cultivars Icatu Amarelo and Catucaí Amarelo were the least susceptible to attack by tephritids in both systems. As for lonchaeids, Oeiras, Catucaí Amarelo and Catuaí Vermelho were the least susceptible cultivars in the shaded system, and there was no difference among the cultivars in the unshaded system. The following tephritid species were obtained: Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) and A. sororcula Zucchi (Tephritidae). Lonchaeids were represented by Neosilba bifida Strikis & Prado, N. certa (Walker), N. glaberrima (Wiedemann), N. pendula (Bezzi), N. pseudopendula (Korytkowski and Ojeda), Dasiops rugifrons Hennig, Neosilba n.sp.10 and Neosilba n.sp.14.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Frugivorous flies have been acquiring great economic importance in coffee crop because they cause premature dropping of coffee beans and significantly decrease the quality of the beverage. The coffee plant is also a natural reservoir of Tephritidae species that infest fruits of economic importance. This study evaluated the influence of the shaded and unshaded coffee systems, under organic management, on the natural infestation of fruits of Coffea arabica L. var. Icatu Amarelo by frugivorous flies. An experiment in completely randomized design was carried out in Valença, RJ, Brazil, with two treatments (shaded coffee with Musa sp. and Erithrina verna Vell. and unshaded coffee monoculture) and four replicates. A 1kg-sample of maturing fruits per plot was harvested in Mach 2004 to evaluate infestation and identify the flies. The mean infestation index was significantly higher in the shaded coffee system. Four species of Tephritidae (Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann), Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) and Anastrepha sororcula Zucchi), and six of Lonchaeidae (Neosilba pendula (Bezzi), Neosilba pseudopendula (Korytkowski and Ojeda), Neosilba certa (Walker), Neosilba glaberrima (Wiedemann), Neosilba n.sp.9 and Neosilba n.sp.10) were recovered from coffee fruits. Nine parasitoid species were obtained, six belonging to Braconidae (Asobara anastrephae (Muesebeck), Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti), Doryctobracon brasiliensis (Szépligeti), Utetes anastrephae (Viereck), Opius bellus Gahan and Opius sp.), and three to Figitidae (Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brèthes), Dicerataspis flavipes (Kieffer) and Odontosema anastrephae Borgmeier). The total percent parasitism was 8.8 percent and 12.4 percent in the shaded and unshaded coffee systems, respectively.
