ABSTRACT

Immunohistochemical analysis showed production of hormones in more than half of 88 pituitary adenomas that were classified mostly as chromophobe in basic staining during 3 years. Prolactin was the most often detected. A combined production of hormones especially of prolactin and growth hormone was not exceptional. Using a sensitive double indirect immunoperoxidase technique enables economy in spending primary antibodies. Evaluation of hormonal production is important for selection of therapy, as well as for settlement of prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Cells of K2M rat sarcoma and their descendants (RP, RPS) form tumours in syngeneic inbred rat strain LEW/CUB. Thirty to fifty per cent of tumour-bearing rats develop metastases, preferentially in the lung. In vitro, a quasi-stellate dynamic morphotype was characteristic of K2M cells and their descendants (RP, RPS): a highly changeable round or spindle-shaped or multipolar rather thick cell body with two or more protrusions of various length, often branching, and broadened at the tips, where vivid membrane activity was observed. Changeability of appearance and directionality of locomotion were stimulated in medium of pH 6.5. The enhanced expression of this morphotype correlated with the increased metastatic potential. In vitro, in poor, slightly acid medium metastasizing cells preserved the quasi-stellate dynamic morphotype and survived longer than non-metastasizing cells. It is likely that the observed combination of traits, viz. the quasi-stellate dynamic morphotype and, under unfavourable conditions, prolonged survival, increased migratory activity and decreased mitotic rate could be of significance in the metastatic cascade, mainly for the escape from the primary site.

ABSTRACT

The FEL-EXPERT was used to improve the diagnosis of brain tumors. Basic structure and decision process of the system were characterized. In a group of 70 testing cases the correct diagnosis was established at the 1st possibility in 83%, as the 1st or 2nd possibility in 91% and as the 1st or 2nd or 3rd possibility in 17%.

ABSTRACT

A 38-year old man deceased after being operated on recurring pituitary adenoma removed 13 years ago. Autopsy showed a massive spread of tumour on dura and in subarachnoid space. Growth hormone producing cells were found prevailing in the primary tumour as well as in secondaries by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence which concurred with acromegaly. Many cells produced prolactin. The tumour spreading discontinually in subdural and subarachnoid space was taken for a carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

The biological compatibility of polypyrrolidone was investigated using subcutaneous implantation in rats. Acute (10 days) and chronic (360 days after implantation) tissue reaction was characterized numerically and compared with poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), used in the Drug Control Research Institute in Prague as a standard in the evaluation of polymers, for which good tolerance in the clinical practice has been demonstrated. Surface changes in the polymer were evaluated by using a scanning electron microscope.

ABSTRACT

Electron microscopy of 57 needle biopsies from livers of 55 patients with chronic hepatitis, mostly of type B, revealed, in addition to typical hepatitis B virus nucleocapsids in 34 cases, also atypical intranuclear inclusions in 9 biopsies. These inclusions consisted of electron-dense particles similar in size to hepatitis B virus nucleocapsids. The possibility of an involvement of a hepatitis non-A non-B virus is discussed.

ABSTRACT

Pyrophosphate labeled with 99Tc was evaluated as an indicator of the calcification which occurs after implantation of polymeric materials in rats. Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), both porous and homogeneous, had been implanted. 99Tc pyrophosphate was applied intravenously to rats in intervals from 14 days to 15 months. Scintigraphy, x-ray examination, and histology were carried out. The ratio of specific activity in the capsule around the implant to specific activity in the reference tissue was determined. The cumulation of activity was parallel with the development of calcification as revealed by histology. The method can be used not only in the screening test of new polymeric materials, but also in a quantitative determination of the degree of calcification in general.
