ABSTRACT

In the scientific world, Professor Jean-Martin Charcot is known for his contribution to the establishment of the anatomo-clinical method in neurology in Paris at the Salpêtrière hospital. However, media attention in the late 1800s has focused on his work on hysteria. In this article, we aim to review how he has been depicted in two recent French movies: Augustine (2012) and Le Bal des Folles (The Mad Women's Ball) (2021). We will compare his image in those two films to articles at the time of his death and contrast how he is represented in other biographical works. Both in the newspapers and in the movies, Charcot's public lessons and experimental work on hypnosis in hysteria are put forward. The two movies offer a new perspective, as both directors were women, and both movies focus on a woman patient's journey at La Salpêtrière. His depiction remains superficial in Le Bal des Folles, portraying a cold, insensitive, and despotic approach to patients. He plays a more central role in Augustine, in which he develops intimacy with one of his patients and a more human and caring side is displayed, in parallel to his authoritative and meticulous figure. Both movies refer to him as a divine authority, but they also allude to his scientific method. In summary, Charcot's recent representations in cinema add a woman's perspective to life under Charcot at La Salpêtrière, which continues to shape further the image we have of this founder of modern neurology.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Language mapping during awake craniotomy can allow for precise resection of epileptogenic lesions, while reducing the risk of damage to eloquent cortex. There are few reports in the literature of language mapping during awake craniotomy in children with epilepsy. Some centers may avoid awake craniotomy in the pediatric age group due to concerns that children are unable to cooperate with such procedures. METHODS: We reviewed pediatric patients from our center with drug-resistant focal epilepsy who underwent language mapping during awake craniotomy and subsequent resection of the epileptogenic lesion. RESULTS: Two patients were identified, both female, aged 17 years and 11 years at the time of surgery. Both patients had frequent and disabling focal seizures despite trials of multiple antiseizure medications. Both patients had resection of their epileptogenic lesions with the aid of intraoperative language mapping; in both cases pathology was consistent with focal cortical dysplasia. Both patients had transient language difficulties in the immediate postoperative period but no deficits at six-month follow-up. Both patients are now seizure-free. CONCLUSIONS: Awake craniotomy should be considered in pediatric patients with drug-resistant epilepsy in whom the suspected epileptogenic lesion is in close proximity to cortical language areas.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Studies on autistic strengths are often focused on what they reveal about autistic intelligence and, in some cases, exceptional and atypical reasoning abilities. An emerging research trend has demonstrated how interests and strengths often evident in autism can be harnessed in interventions to promote the well-being, adaptive, academic and professional success of autistic people. However, abilities in certain domains may be accompanied by major limitations in others, as well as psychiatric and behavioral issues, which may challenge their inclusion in support programs. OBJECTIVES: To provide an in-depth, pragmatic, real-life example of the psychological and psychiatric management of interests and strengths in an autistic adolescent. METHOD: An autistic teenager, C.A., with above-average calendar calculation and musical abilities, received psychiatric, neuropsychological, and language standardized and clinical assessments, combined with a measurement of his musical and calendar calculation abilities. C.A. and his parents then received psychiatric and psychological support over a 14-month period, targeting their perceptions of C.A.'s interests, strengths, and co-occurring difficulties. RESULTS: C.A. had a verbal IQ within the intellectual disability range and a non-verbal IQ in the low mean range. Modest calendar calculation, absolute pitch, and matrix abilities coexisted with severe receptive and expressive language disorder. The discrepancy between his abilities in areas of strengths and his limitations in other domains led to anxiety, frustration, and sometimes behavioral issues. Displacing the focus from academic performance to interests, as well as promoting the use of his strengths to develop new skills independently of their short-term adaptive benefits yielded positive effects on C.A.'s self-assessment, quality of life, and behavior at follow up. DISCUSSION: The appealing idea that abilities mostly found in autistic people, such as calendar calculation, can be directly harnessed into academic achievement and lead to paid employment may have detrimental effects, especially when such abilities are modest and associated with other limitations. These abilities should be primarily used to maximize well-being and quality of life, independently of their short-term adaptive function, which may or may not be positive.

ABSTRACT

This longitudinal study aims to describe the trajectory of language development in children with CHD aged 12-24 months assessed through an early monitoring and individualized intervention program. We also sought to determine whether early language performances, at 12 months of age, predict 24-month language abilities. We conducted developmental assessments of 49 children with CHD using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Developmental, third edition (Bayley-III) at 12 and 24 months, and the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (MBCDI) at 12, 18 and 24 months. Compared to normative populations, CHD patients showed significantly lower mean scores in both receptive and expressive language scales of the Bayley-III and the MBCDI at 12 months, whereas at 18 and 24 months only expressive language scores were reduced. No differences were found in the cognitive scale. Communicative gestures at 12 months were significantly predictive of language skills at 24 months of age. Our findings indicate specific vulnerability of language outcome, especially in expressive skills, rather than a global cognitive impairment in our patients with CHD. We recommend using communicative gestures as an early marker of language development to improve our ability to detect language delays in this population.

ABSTRACT

Specific language impairment (SLI) is characterised by persistent difficulties that affect language abilities in otherwise normally developing children (Leonard, 2014). It remains challenging to identify young children affected by SLI in French. We tested oral production of the passé composé tense in 19 children in kindergarten and first grade with SLI aged from 5;6 to 7;4 years. All children were schooled in a French environment, but with different linguistic backgrounds. We used an Android application, Jeu de verbes (Marquis et al., 2012), with six verbs in each of four past participle categories (ending in -é, -i, -u, and other irregulars). We compared their results and error types to those of control children (from Marquis, 2012-2014) matched for gender, age, languages spoken at home, and parental education. Results show that children with SLI do not master the passé composé in the same way as typical French children do, at later ages than previously shown in the literature. This task shows potential for oral language screening in French-speaking children in kindergarten and first grade, independently of language background.
