ABSTRACT

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be produced through an easy and safe process called green synthesis and have been considered an efficient antimicrobial agent. The antimicrobial effect of silver nanoparticles green synthesized with E. tirucalli (aveloz) can be a promising technique for preserving stored strawberries. The objective of this work was to perform a green synthesis of AgNPs with aveloz extract (Av) and evaluate its effect on the physiology and preservation of stored strawberries. Silver nitrate was reduced with Av to produce Av-AgNPs. The Av-AgNPs were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry, and laser diffraction. The in vitro antifungal activity of Av-AgNPs was evaluated against Botrytis cinerea and Rhizopus stolonifer. Strawberries were treated with Av-AgNPs and stored (5 °C) for 12 days. Respiratory rate, decay, fresh mass loss, firmness, total phenolics and antioxidant activity of the strawberries were evaluated. According to the results, Av-AgNPs synthesis was performed, and it presented sizes between 40 and 90 nm. Av-AgNPs inhibited B. cinerea but was less effective for R. stolonifer. Total phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, fresh mass loss and firmness of strawberries were not influenced by Av-AgNPs. Treated strawberries had a lower respiratory rate than the control and showed no symptoms of microbiological deterioration until 9 days of storage, while in the control the deterioration symptoms started after 3 days. This study showed that the green synthesis of AgNPs with Av produced nanoparticles smaller than 100 nm, and that they were effective against strawberries decay during storage, indicating to be a promising protection technique against decay.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the fungitoxic effect of the aqueous extracts of Baccharis trimera on the mycelial growth of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum 89 race, as well as its effect on the accumulation of phaseolin in hypocotyls of different cultivars and common bean varieties. It was obtained 20% aqueous extract from plants collected in municipalities of the Western Region of Paraná. Blocks containing C. lindemuthianum mycelium were transferred to Petri dishes containing medium with the different extracts and incubated at 25 °C. The colonies diameter was measured until the 12th day. Effects of aqueous extracts on phaseolin production was evaluated in hypocotyls of Carioca, Cnpf 8104, Soberana, Tibatã, Uirapurú cultivars, as well as Rosinha and Vermelho varieties. Each one cultivar and variety hypocotyl was transferred separately to test tubes containing 500 μL of 20% aqueous extracts. Sterile water, Bion®, and UV was used as controls. The phaseolin production was measured in spectrophotometer [280 nm]. Results of the evaluation of the antifungal activity of aqueous extracts of Baccharis sp. specimens collected indicate that approximately 50% of the samples presented capacity to reduce between 74 and 92% of C. lindemuthianum growth. Cultivar Tibatã and Vermelho variety showed greater sensitivity over the applied treatments. Results of fungal filtrates and vegetal aqueous extracts presented a low capacity to induce the production of phaseolin in hypocotyls.

ABSTRACT

Nematode control strategies are limited and alternative control is demanded. The main aim was to evaluate control potential of Hohenbuehelia spp. (Hohenbuehelia mastrucata, Hohenbuehelia barbatula, Hohenbuehelia bullulifera, Hohenbuehelia portegna, Hohenbuehelia petaloides and Hohenbuehelia paraguayensis) and Trichoderma koningiopsis against Meloidogyne javanica in bean plants in greenhouse. The parameters evaluated were the number of galls and egg masses which were evaluated in three root regions: basal, intermediate and tip; nematode reproduction factor; vegetal growth parameters (plants height on V1, V2, V4, and R5 growth stages, root length, dry weight of root and aerial part dry weight); Treatments were composed by individual interactions of each fungal isolate with 4,000 eggs of M. javanica, having a total control (bean) and a partial control (bean + nematode) arranged in completely randomized design with four repetitions. Data were tested by Scott­Knott (5%). For vegetal growth parameters, there was only significance for dry weight of roots. All species were able to control nematodes.

ABSTRACT

Induced resistance emerges as an alternative method for controlling plant diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of biotic and abiotic resistance inducers for controlling white rust in rocket (Eruca sativa), as well as biochemical changes (peroxidase) and fitness costs. The experiments were developed with the abiotic inducers acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) (12.5, 25, and 50 mg ai L-1) and citrus biomass (CB) (0.1, 0.25, and 0.5%), as well as with the biotic ones Saccharomyces cerevisiae (25 mg mL-1), Bacillus thuringiensis (25 mg p.c. mL-1), Saccharomyces boulardii (25 mg mL-1), and phosphorylated mannan oligosaccharide (PMO) (0.25%), in preventive and curative interventions. Fungicide mancozeb (1.6 g ai L-1), Bordeaux mixture (1%), and water were the control treatments. Leaf samples were collected 3, 7, 11, 15, and 19 days after the treatments to determine peroxidases and assess the severity and production. Concerning abiotic inducers, all doses of ASM and CB 0.5% (preventive) and CB 0.25% (curative) reduced the severity of white rust, whereas, among biotic inducers, only PMO applied preventively controlled the disease. Peroxidase activity was higher for CB 0.25% and ASM 50 mg L-1. Bordeaux mixture induced higher peroxidase activity.(AU)


A indução de resistência surge como um método alternativo para o controle de doenças em plantas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência de indutores de resistência bióticos e abióticos no controle de ferrugem branca em rúcula (Eruca sativa), bem como alterações bioquímicas (peroxidase) e o impacto na produção. Foram desenvolvidos experimentos com os indutores abióticos acibenzolar-S-metil (ASM) (12,5; 25 e 50 mg i.a. L-1) e biomassa cítrica (BC) (0,1; 0,25 e 0,5%), e os bióticos Saccharomyces cerevisiae (25 mg p.c. mL-1), Bacillus thuringiensis (25 mg p.c. mL-1), Saccharomyces boulardii (25 mg p.c. mL-1) e manano-oligossacarídeo fosforilado (MOF) (0,25%), sendo aplicados preventiva e curativamente. Como controles foram utilizados o fungicida mancozeb (1,6 g i.a. L-1), calda bordalesa (1%) e água. Amostras de folhas foram coletadas aos 3, 7, 11, 15 e 19 dias após os tratamentos para a determinação de peroxidases, e avaliações de severidade e produção. Entre os indutores abióticos, todas as doses de ASM e BC 0,5% (preventivamente) e BC 0,25% (curativamente) reduziram a severidade da ferrugem branca, enquanto entre os indutores bióticos, apenas o MOF aplicado preventivamente, controlou a doença. A atividade de peroxidase foi superior para BC 0,25% e ASM 50 mg L-1. O tratamento com calda bordalesa também incrementou a atividade de peroxidase.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate pesticide poisonings in the southern region of Brazil between years 1999 and 2014. Data were collected from the database Sinitox. Intoxications and deaths were evaluated according to the distribution by gender (female and male), age group (≤14, 15-59 and ≥60 years), area of occurrence (urban and rural), circumstance (accident, occupational and suicide attempt) and evolution of the cases over time (cure, unconfirmed cure, death and sequelae). In the evaluated period, 21,305 cases of intoxication were registered. The results show that males between the ages of 15 and 59 years are more affected; and there is a greater representativeness in the urban area. These results are related to the application of agrochemicals being carried out by individuals between 15 and 59 years of age. The great correlation of urban area possibly occurs in function of the air currents brought from the field and as a result, population has been more affected and the consumption of contaminated food. It was observed that women handling pesticides more cautiously, in this way the accidents with male gender are more frequent, however, many women use the product intentionally to provoke suicide.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to characterize the fermentative and microbiological profile of Tifton 85 bermudagrass haylage with different layers of polyethylene film and storage time. METHODS: The experimental design consisted of a randomized block design with four and six wrapping layers (100 and 150 microns in total. respectively) allocated in the main plots, through repeated measures analysis (30, 60, and 90 days of storage) with four replicates. RESULTS: The storage time and number of wrapping layers did not show changes in the population of Clostridium and lactic acid bacteria. A decrease was observed in the enterobacteria population with an increase in the storage period in the two wrapping layers studied. Upon opening of the haylage at 30 days, the population of Bacillus was lower in haylages made with six layers of wrapping (3.63 log colony forming units/g). No growth of Listeria sp. or Salmonella sp. was observed during the experimental period. The fungal genera with a greater occurrence were Penicillium sp. and Fusarium sp. The following mycotoxins were not detected: ochratoxin A, fumonisins, and zearalenone. Relative to the organic butyric, propionic, and acetic acids, the haylages presented a low concentration of lactic acid; this may have prevented a drop in the pH, which was high when the silos were opened (5.4). The levels of ammoniacal nitrogen and soluble carbohydrates presented no variation among the number of wrapping layers, with an overall average of 35.55 and 38.04 g/kg. CONCLUSION: Tifton 85 bermudagrass haylage wrapped with four and six layers presented adequate fermentation and microbiological characteristics in the evaluated periods.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the control of charcoal rot in soybeans using Sepia and Arsenicum album homeopathic solutions in dynamizations of 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48CH (hahnemanian centesimal scale), in addition to verify the antimicrobial activity of these treatments against Macrophomina phaseolina. Additional treatments were also used, including distilled water and a hydroalcoholic solution of 30% ethanol. In vitro tests were performed to analyze the number of micro-sclerotia and the mycelial growth of the fungus. In vivo assays were used to evaluate the progress of the disease and the size of the lesions. For the area under the mycelial growth curve (AUMGC), A. album had no effect, however, Sepia reduced up to 32% of the fungal growth. For micro-sclerotia there was no statistical difference. For the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), both Sepia and A. album in 24CH dynamization reduced fungal growth up to 50% and 70% in the first and second assays, respectively, compared to control treatments. These results indicate the potential of these homeopathic drugs for controlling soybean charcoal rot.(AU)


O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o controle da podridão cinzenta da haste em soja, pulverizando soluções homeopáticas de Sepia e Arsenicum album, nas dinamizações 6, 12, 24, 36 e 48CH (centesimal hahnemaniana), bem como verificar a atividade antimicrobiana desses tratamentos contra Macrophomina phaseolina. Como tratamentos adicionais utilizou-se água destilada e solução hidroalcoólica a 30% de etanol. Foram realizados ensaios in vitro a fim de analisar o número de microescleródios e o crescimento micelial do fungo, e ensaios in vivo para acompanhar o progresso da doença e o tamanho da lesão. Para área abaixo da curva de crescimento micelial (AACCM), A. album não apresentou efeito, no entanto, Sepia reduziu em até 32% o crescimento. Para microescleródios não houve diferença estatística. Para área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD), tanto Sepia quanto A. album na dinamização 24CH apresentaram redução de até 50% no primeiro ensaio e de até 70% no segundo ensaio quando comparados com a solução hidroalcoólica. Estes resultados indicam o potencial desses medicamentos homeopáticos no controle de podridão cinzenta da haste em soja.(AU)

ABSTRACT

RESUMO: O objetivo do presente trabalho foi quantificar e identificar a ocorrência dos principais gêneros de fungos, no solo, material vegetal morto, raiz e parte aérea no capim Tifton 85, adubado com biofertilizante suíno, 7 dias após o início da rebrota. As avaliações foram realizadas, durante seu desenvolvimento (15; 22; 29 e 36 dias após o início da rebrota), no momento do enfardamento e no feno, com 30 dias de armazenamento. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com parcelas subdivididas no tempo, com quatro locais de coleta no campo de produção de feno (solo, parte aérea da planta, raiz e material vegetal morto), e 6 tempos de avaliação para parte aérea da planta (15; 22; 29; e 36 dias início da rebrota, no momento do enfardamento e com 30 dias de armazenamento) e quatro tempos de avaliação para solo, raiz e material vegetal morto (15; 22; 29; e 36 dias após início da rebrota). Na contagem e identificação dos gêneros dos fungos referentes a cada parte da planta e solo, foram calculadas as médias e essas submetidas à análise descritiva. Uma maior população fúngica foi observada no material vegetal morto e solo, predominando o gênero Penicillium em todas as partes da planta estudadas.


ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to quantify and identify the occurrence of the main genres of fungi soil, dead plant material, roots and shoots in Tifton 85 fertilized with swine biofertilizer, 7 days after start of regrowth. The evaluation were carried out during development (15, 22, 29 and 36 days of age) at the time of baling, hay and 30 days of storage. The experimental design was randomized blocks with split plots in time sub with 4 sampling sites (soil, plant tops, roots and dead plant material), and 6 times of evaluation for aerial part of the plant (15, 22, 29 and 36 days of regrowth, at the time of baling and 30 days of storage) and 4-cycle assessment for soil, roots and dead plant material (15, 22, 29 and 36 days of regrowth). In the counting and identification of genera of fungi belonging to each part of the plant and soil were averaged and those submitted to descriptive analysis. Greater fungal population was observed in soil and dead plant material, predominantly Penicillium in all parts of the plant studied.

ABSTRACT

The efficiency of Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam.) seeds for removing lead ions (Pb(2+)) from water was evaluated. Parameters such as solution pH, adsorbent mass, contact time between solution and adsorbent, isotherms, thermodynamic, kinetics, and desorption were evaluated. The maximum adsorption capacity of the biosorbent was found to be 12.24 mg g(-1). In order to verify the effectiveness of this material, comparative studies were performed with activated carbon under the same optimal conditions for the construction of isotherms and the desorption process. Average desorption rate values led to the assumption that a strong interaction took place between the adsorbents and the metal ions. Thus, it has been concluded that the biosorbent studied herein can be considered very effective and feasible for remediating Pb(2+)-contaminated solutions, since this material is itself an untreated and low-cost byproduct.

ABSTRACT

Heterokaryosis is an important mechanism which provides genetic variability increase in filamentous fungi. In order to assess the diversity of vegetative compatibility reactions existing among Colletotrichum acutatum isolates derived from different hosts, complementary nit mutants of each isolate were obtained and paired in all possible combinations. Vegetative compatibility groups (VCG) were identified among the isolates according to their ability to form viable heterokaryons. Seven VCGs were identified among the isolates, one of which contained isolates from different hosts. VCGs 2 and 6 contained two and three members, respectively; VCG-3 contained four members, and four VCGs (1, 4, 5, and 7) contained a single one. This study shows, for the first time, the isolation and the parasexual segregation of a heterozygous diploid sector derived from the heterokaryon formed with nit mutants from VCG-6. Diploid, named DE-3, showed nit+ phenotype and growth rate similar to the parental wild isolate. When inoculated in the presence of the haploidizing agent benomyl, the diploid strain produced parasexual haploid segregants exhibiting the nit phenotypes of the crossed mutants. Since viable heterokaryons and diploid may be formed among vegetative compatible isolates of C. acutatum, this study suggests that the parasexual cycle may be an alternative source of genetic variability in C. acutatum isolates.

ABSTRACT

(O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a atividade como antifúngico, antibacteriano e indutor da produção de fitoalexinas dos hidrolatos de Helietta apiculata (canela-de-veado) (HA), Conyza canadensis (buva) (CC) e Cymbopogon nardus (citronela) (CN) nas concentrações de 1, 5, 10, 15, 20 e 25%, buscando seu uso no controle alternativo de doenças em plantas. Para o ensaio de fitoalexinas foram utilizados mesocótilos estiolados de sorgo. Para o efeito antibacteriano foi avaliado o crescimento da bactéria Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris em meio caldo nutriente suplementado com os tratamentos, tendo como testemunha mistura de antibióticos (22,5 mg/L de oxitetraciclina + 225 mg/L de estreptomicina). O efeito antifúngico foi avaliado através da mensuração do crescimento vegetativo, esporulação, germinação de esporos e desenvolvimento do tubo germinativo de Alternaria brassicae, sendo o fungicida azoxystrobin (0,08 g i.a./L) usado como controle. Foi observado acréscimo na síntese de fitoalexinas com o aumento na concentração dos hidrolatos, sendo o melhor resultado obtido com CN, o qual promoveu aumento de cerca de 4,3 vezes mais, seguido de HA (2,5 vezes) e CC (2,1 vezes), em relação a testemunha água. Resultados semelhantes foram obtidos para crescimento bacteriano com os seguintes resultados de inibição (em %) no desenvolvimento da bactéria: CN: 29,8, HA: 14,9, CC: 14,6 e antibióticos: 97,7. Com relação à ação antifúngica foi observada inibição do desenvolvimento dos tubos germinativos, sendo que os hidrolatos de CC e HA inibiram 69,2 e 56,2%, respectivamente, resultado semelhante ao fungicida. O hidrolato de CN não apresentou efeito antifúngico. Estes resultados indicam a presença de compostos indutores de fitoalexinas, antibacterianos e antifúngicos nesses hidrolatos, porém em baixas concentrações.


The aim of this work was to evaluate the antifungical, antibacterial and phytoalexins elicitors activities ofhydrolates, for using in the alternative control of plant diseases. The hydrolates of Helietta apiculata(HA), Conyza canadensis (CC) and Cymbopogon nardus (CN) were used in the concentrations of 1, 5,10, 15, 20 and 25%. In the phytoalexins assay, sorghum etiolated mesocotyls were used. The antibacterialeffect was evaluated on the growth of the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris in liquidnutrient medium and antibiotic (oxytetraciclin 22.5 mg/L + streptomycin 225 mg/L) was used as controltreatment. The antifungical effect was evaluated on the micelial growth, esporulation, conidia germinationand development of germinative tubes of Alternaria brassicae. The fungicide azoxystrobin (0.08 g a.i./L) was used as control treatment. There was increment in the phytoalexins synthesis with the increase inhydrolates concentration. The better result was obtained with CN that promoted increase 4.3 times largerin relation to the value of the control treatment with water, followed by HA (2.5 times) and CC (2.1 times).Similar results were obtained to the antibacterial activity with the following inhibition results (%) in the development of the bacterium: CN: 29.8, HA: 14.9, CC: 14.6 and antibiotic: 97.7. The main antifungicaleffect was observed on the development of the germinative tubes. Hydrolates of CC and HA showedinhibition of up to 69.2 and 56.2%, respectively, being similar to the fungicide azoxystrobin. The hydrolateof CN did not show antifungical effect. These results indicate the presence of phytoalexins elicitors, and antibacterial and antifungical compounds in those hydrolates, however in low concentrations

Com a prática da irrigação e novos híbridos de couve-flor, é possível produzir durante todo o ano e com alta produtividade. Mas, a cultura tem sido afetada por doenças a exemplo da podridão negra causada por Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, fomentando novas pesquisas para seu controle. Com o objetivo de verificar o potencial de Mikania glomerata no controle dessa doença, a tintura etanólica 50 ºGL dessa planta medicinal foi avaliada quanto: atividade antimicrobiana in vitro através do crescimento bacteriano em tubos de ensaio contendo 100, 250, 500 e 1000 mg L-1 da tintura; indução de resistência local ou sistêmica em planta de couve-flor aos 25 dias de idade, em casa de vegetação, através da pulverização de tintura concomitantemente e três dias antes da inoculação com o patógeno, sendo água e calda bordaleza tratamentos controle; atividade de peroxidases em folhas tratadas e não tratadas de couve-flor, colhidas concomitantemente e as 24, 48, 72 h da pulverização da tintura e, após pulverização-inoculção. A tintura etanólica, in vitro, promoveu inibição no crescimento bacteriano, a partir da concentração de 250 mg L-1. Nas concentrações de 500 mg L-1 e 1000 mg L-1 foram observadas, respectivamente, 24 e 38 de inibição do crescimento bacteriano. Nas plantas de couve-flor foi observada redução da doença apenas em folhas tratadas com 100 e 500 mg L-1 de tintura, aplicada concomitantemente à inoculação, comportamento este semelhante ao da calda bordaleza, indicando que o controle através da tintura de guaco é através de atividade antimicrobiana direta. Ficou indicado que a indução de peroxidases ocorreu devido ao processo infeccioso e não em função dos tratamentos com tintura etanólica de guaco. Estes resultados indicam o potencial da tintura de guaco para o controle preventivo da podridão negra da couve-flor.


With the use of irrigation and new hybrids of cauliflower, it is possible to get production during all theyear with hight yield. However, the crop has been affected by diseases, as the dark rot caused by X.campestris pv. campestris. The objective of this research work was to study the potential of Mikaniaglomerata for the control of this disease. Alcoholic extract 50 ºGL of M. glomerata was evaluatedregarding to: in vitro antimicrobial activity through bacterial growth in 100, 250, 500 and 1000 mg L-1 ofthe alcoholic extract; induction of local or systemic resistance in 25 days old cauliflower, with spray ofalcoholic extract concomitantly and three days before the inoculation with the pathogen (water andbordeau mixture were used as control); peroxidases activity in leaves of cauliflower treated and nottreated, and harvested concomitantly, 24, 48 and 72 hours after spraying the alcoholic extract and alsoafter inoculation. The alcoholic extract of M. glomerata showed inhibition of the bacterial growth invitro at the concentrations of 250, 500 and 1000 mg L-1. The concentrations of 500 mg L-1 and 1000 mg L-1inhibited 24% and 38% of the bacterial growth. This inhibition could be due to antibacterial compoundsin the alcoholic extract. An inhibition of the disease in vivo occurred only in the leaves treated with 100and 500 mg L-1 of alcoholic extract when applied concomitantly with the bacteria. This result was similarto bordeau mixture, indicating a control by direct antimicrobial activity. There was no systemic resistenceinduction for all treatments. The peroxidases induction was due to infectious pathogen process and notto the treatments with alcoholic extract. The results indicate the potential of M. glomerata alcoholicextract for the preventive control of cauliflower dark rot disease

Avaliou-se o controle in vitro de Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis mediante o uso de extrato aquoso de quatro genótipos de cúrcuma provenientes de cultivos de Jaboticabal-SP, Mara Rosa-GO, Maringá-PR e Mercedes-PR, bem como o efeito curativo, através do tratamento de manivas de mandioca infectadas com o patógeno e plantio em condições de campo. No experimento in vitro, o extrato de cúrcuma causou inibição total do crescimento da bactéria, na concentração de 10, para o material proveniente de Mercedes, enquanto que, para a cúrcuma de Jaboticabal, houve controle total a 15 e o de Mara Rosa a 20. A cúrcuma proveniente de Maringá não inibiu totalmente o crescimento, em nenhuma das concentrações utilizadas. No experimento in vivo, o brotamento das plantas foi pouco, devido ao grau de infecção das manivas. O extrato bruto de cúrcuma a 10 proveniente de Mercedes foi prejudicial para a mandioca em condição de campo, reduzindo o estande em relação aos tratamentos controle. Possivelmente, houve ação tóxica direta sobre a fisiologia da planta ou indução de suscetibilidade. Na concentração de 1 da cúrcuma proveniente de Maringá, não houve diferença estatística em relação ás testemunhas, para o parâmetro estande de plantas. O controle químico utilizado não foi eficiente, pois se comportou igual à testemunha água. Com relação à severidade e à produtividade não se conservaram diferenças significativas entre os tratamentos. Os resultados indicam que, embora haja atividade antibacteriana a X. axonopodis pv. manihotis, os extratos de cúrcuma, nas concentrações utilizadas, não apresentam efeito curativo em manivas de mandioca infectadas pelo patógeno


medicinalAbstractThe control of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis was evaluated in vitro by using aqueous extractof four turmeric genotypes from Jaboticabal-SP, Mara Rosa-GO, Maringá-PR and Mercedes-PR, as wellas in vivo, by treatment of infected cassava stems and their cultivation at field conditions. The resultsshowed that in vitro experiment, turmeric extract inhibited completely the bacteria growth in theconcentration of 10% for the genotype from Mercedes, while for the Jaboticabal's turmeric there was a total control at 15% and for Mara Rosa at 20%. Turmeric genotype from Maringá did not show fullinhibition of the bacterial growth in none of the extract concentrations used. At field conditions, sproutingswere extremely low, due to the stems infection degree. Turmeric extract at 10%, from Mercedes, washarmful for the cassava, reducing stand regarding the control treatments. Possibly there was a directtoxic action on the plant physiology or susceptibility induction. But in the concentration of 1% ofturmeric from Maringá, there was no statistical difference in relation to the control treatment for the plantstand. The chemical control was not completely efficient. There was no statistical difference amongtreatments for both severity and productivity. The results indicate that, although presenting antibacterialactivity to X. axonopodis pv. manihotis, the turmeric extracts, in the used concentrations, did notpresent curative effect in cassava stems infected with the pathogen.Key words: Bacterial blight of cassava, alternative control, medicinal plant
