ABSTRACT

Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) represent a form of tooth wear, characterized by the irreversible loss of dental hard tissues at the enamel-cement junction, without the involvement of caries and dental trauma. The aim of this study was to highlight the morphological elements of NCCLs via their stereomicroscopic examination and to confirm the role of this examination in the diagnosis of early lesions. In addition, the association between the morphological aspects identified during the stereomicroscopic examination of NCCLs and their etiological factors was determined. For this study, extracted teeth with NCCLs were examined with a stereomicroscope. The morphological aspects of NCCLs were evaluated at magnifications up to 75×. In wedge-shaped NCCLs, the stereomicroscopic examination allowed the identification and measurement of scratches, furrows and cracks. In saucer-shaped NCCLs, the stereomicroscopic examination highlighted the smooth appearance of the walls. The presented study highlighted the role of stereomicroscopic examination in the assessment of NCCL morphology and in their early diagnosis. The study confirmed, in particular, the role of occlusal overloads and tooth brushing in determining the morphology of NCCLs.

ABSTRACT

Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are considered the irreversible losses of dental hard tissues at the cemento-enamel junction, in the absence of acute trauma and dental caries. The aim of this study was to highlight the presence of NCCLs in cervical areas based on specific macroscopic aspects in order to establish their clinical form, size and location and to confirm the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) examination in the early diagnosis of these lesions. For this study, 52 extracted teeth were used, which did not have endodontic treatments, fillings or carious lesions in the cervical area. All teeth were examined macroscopically and OCT was used to evaluate the degree of occlusal wear, the presence and clinical form of NCCLs. Most NCCLs were identified on the buccal surfaces of the premolars. The most frequently encountered clinical form was the wedge-shaped form, with a radicular location. NCCLs present most frequently in the wedge-shaped form. Teeth that presented several NCCLs were identified. The OCT examination is an adjunct method to evaluate the clinical forms of NCCL.

ABSTRACT

The success of endodontic treatment is dependent on the removal of bacteria. A modern strategy to reduce bacterial load is laser irradiation. During this procedure, there is a local increase in temperature with possible side effects. The aim of this study was to determine the thermal behavior of a maxillary first molar when performing the conventional irradiation technique using a diode laser. For this study, a 3D virtual model of a maxillary first molar was created. The preparation of the access cavity, the rotary instrumentation of the palatal root canal and the laser irradiation protocol were simulated. The model was exported in a finite element analysis program where the temperature and heat flux were studied. Temperature and heat flux maps were obtained, and the temperature increase on the internal wall of the root canal was analyzed. The maximum temperature value exceeded 400 °C and was maintained for less than 0.5 s. The obtained temperature maps support the bactericidal effect of diode laser and the limitation of damage to surrounding tissues. On internal root walls, the temperature reached several hundred degrees Celsius, but for very short durations. Conventional laser irradiation is an adjuvant method of decontamination of the endodontic system.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The aim of this paper was to validate the Romanian version of an ageism scale for dental students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The initial 27-item ageism scale was translated into Romanian and administered to 210 dental students in Craiova. The data were analysed using principal components analysis (PCA) with an orthogonal, Varimax rotation. The answers were then compared across several demographic variables using a combination of independent samples t tests and one-way between-subjects analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: Adequate factorability was confirmed with a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) of 0.676 and a Bartlett's Test of Sphericity yielding P < 0.001. PCA revealed a 10-item scale distributed into three components that accounted for 58% of the overall variance. The first component contained 4 items related to the cost-benefit of providing care to older patients (α = 0.80). The second contained 3 items that revolved around the perceptions about older people and their value in the society (α = 0.59). The third contained 3 items related to gerodontology training (α = 0.46). Discriminant validity showed differences in the first component based on whether a student had an older family member. CONCLUSIONS: The 10-item, three components scale demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability.

ABSTRACT

The main purpose of the study was to highlight the incidence of various changes in the oral mucosa associated with wearing removable acrylic dentures. Materials and method. The study was performed on a total of 45 subjects who presented at the Prosthodontics Clinic and the Oral Rehabilitation Clinic of Craiova Faculty of Dental Medicine during January 2018-May 2020. Results. Of the 45 subjects that were wearing at least one acrylic denture 31,11% presented oral mucosa changes or lesions. The most common mucosal lesion was type 1 according to Newton's classification.
