ABSTRACT

Sixty two patients with fractures of the neck of the little finger metacarpal have been studied. Treatment consisted of unrestricted exercises without any splintage or attempts at reduction, irrespective of the degree of angulation of the fractures. Patients were reviewed at one or two-weekly intervals until movement had recovered and return to work was possible. One year after injury, patients were recalled for examination. Recovery was rapid with no long-term functional restriction, although 14% of patients noted minor cosmetic deformity.

ABSTRACT

The use of the A.O. small fragment set in fractures of the hand is discussed. Problems in phalangeal fractures have been encountered but the equipment has been valuable in certain diaphyseal and articular fractures of the metacarpals. The advantages and disadvantages have been weighed.

ABSTRACT

A trial was undertaken to assess the effect of dextran 70 (Macrodex) in prophylaxis against thrombosis in womem over 65 years with fractures of the upper end of the femur. The dosage used was 500 ml at operation and 500 ml on the first postoperative day. At this dosage given at this time there was no difference in the overall incidence of clinically diagnosed deep venous thrombosis in the group of patients given dextran 70 compared with the control group. There was a tendency for thrombosis to occur earlier in the control group. The mortality rates at 3 weeks and even at 6 months were less in the treated group than in the control series.
