ABSTRACT

This work presents the dataset of stable water isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen measured in water samples from different sources (precipitation, surface water, groundwater, tap water) across Kazakhstan from 2017 to 2018 and from 2020 to 2023. The dataset includes results on isotopic composition of 399 water samples, namely precipitation: event-based (n = 108), cumulative monthly (n = 22); surface water: lakes, reservoirs, brooks, rivers, channels (n = 175), groundwater: shallow and artesian groundwater, spring (n = 85), tapwater (n = 9). For each sample name of the source, location, latitude, longitude and date of sampling, measurement uncertainty (one standard deviation) are available. The samples were assessed by plotting the data in dual δ18O vs. δ2H isotope space with reference to values found in the published literature and fitting a linear regression equation for Astana (event) precipitation. Overall, this is the first dataset covering wide range of sources across Kazakhstan, which could be used by global and regional water resource assessments and studies such as tracing water sources, hydrograph separation and end-member analyses, isotope mass balance, evapotranspiration partitioning, residence time analysis and groundwater recharge.

ABSTRACT

Intense urbanisation in many coastal areas has led to intensification of groundwater consumption, while reducing permeable areas and increasing the frequency and magnitude of flooding. Among the potential strategies to compensate for these adverse effects, which are expected to become worse as a result of climate change, rooftop rainwater harvesting (RWH) in combination with managed aquifer recharge (MAR), may be indicated. This work investigated the performance of different configurations of such a system, tested as a twofold sustainable stormwater and domestic water management tool in a tropical metropole (João Pessoa, Brazil). This area located over a sedimentary aquifer system illustrates the water security challenges of densely urbanised areas in southern cities. To that end, several configurations of rooftop catchments and storage volumes were evaluated, by simulating a MAR-RWH system connected to the regional unconfined aquifer (Barreiras Formation) through a 6″ diameter injection well. Rainfall-runoff-recharge processes and water balances were simulated using monitored high-temporal resolution rainfall data. The results showed that catchments ranging from 180 to 810 m2, connected to tanks from 0.5 to 30.0 m³, are the optimal solutions in terms of efficient rainwater retention and peak flow reduction. These solutions provided mean annual estimates of aquifer recharge between 57 and 255 m³/yr from 2004 to 2019. The results of this study highlight the opportunity for MAR schemes to reconcile stormwater management and water supply goals.

ABSTRACT

Sustained environmental and human health protection is threatened by ~350,000 chemicals available in global markets, plus new biological entities including coronaviruses. These water-quality hazards challenge the proponents of managed aquifer recharge (MAR) who seek to ensure the integrity of groundwater. A risk-based regulatory framework accounting for groundwater quality changes, adoption in subsurface attenuation zones, and use of advanced monitoring methods is required to support confidence in the sustainability of MAR.


La protection durable de l'environnement et de la santé humaine est menacée par ~350,000 substances chimiques disponibles sur les marchés mondiaux, à quoi s'ajoutent de nouvelles entités biologiques, incluant les coronavirus. Ces risques sur la qualité de l'eau sont un défi pour les partisans de la recharge raisonnée des aquifères (RRA) qui cherchent à assurer l'intégrité des eaux souterraines. Un cadre réglementaire basé sur les risques, tenant compte des changements de qualité des eaux souterraines, de l'adoption de zones d'atténuation souterraine, de l'utilisation de méthodes de contrôle avancées, est nécessaire pour soutenir la confiance dans la durabilité de la RRA.

Estos peligros para la calidad del agua suponen un desafío para los defensores de la recarga gestionada de acuíferos (MAR), que pretenden garantizar la integridad de las aguas subterráneas. Se necesita un marco normativo basado en el riesgo que tenga en cuenta los cambios en la calidad de las aguas subterráneas, la incorporación a las zonas de atenuación del subsuelo y el uso de métodos avanzados de control para respaldar la confianza en la sostenibilidad de la recarga acuífera gestionada.


A proteção sustentável do meio ambiente e da saúde humana está ameaçada por cerca de 350,000 produtos químicos disponíveis nos mercados globais, além de novas entidades biológicas, incluindo coronavírus. Esses riscos de qualidade da água desafiam os proponentes da recarga gerenciada de aquíferos (RGA) que buscam garantir a integridade das águas subterrâneas. Uma estrutura regulatória baseada em risco que considere as mudanças na qualidade das águas subterrâneas, a adoção em zonas de atenuação do subsolo e o uso de métodos avançados de monitoramento são necessários para apoiar a confiança na sustentabilidade da RGA.

ABSTRACT

A quantitative microbial risk assessment was conducted to assess the health risks associated with the exposure of agricultural workers to tertiary treated wastewater in irrigated fields through soil ingestion in Cyprus. Three pathogenic microorganisms were chosen, particularly E. coli (bacteria), rotavirus (viruses) and Cryptosporidium. Two extreme exposure scenarios were investigated. Monte Carlo simulations were performed using input data from literature, and the model outputs were compared to the health standards of the World Health Organization (WHO). The results suggested that additional treatment is required for all pathogens to satisfy the health standards. Sensitivity analysis identified the source concentration and pathogen reduction due to soil aquifer passage as the most influential factors in the model outputs. Additional computations were performed to evaluate the minimum pathogen reduction due to soil aquifer passage so that the health targets are achieved for the 95 % of the output values. Rotavirus and Cryptosporidium were found to require more treatment than E. coli. The inclusion of these reference pathogens to the monitoring network of the local authorities is recommended, and the role of soil aquifer passage is emphasized on reducing the concentration of the contaminants.

ABSTRACT

Recently, the variety of the financial frauds have increased, while the number of victims became difficult to estimate. The purpose of this paper is to present the main profiles of financial frauds' victims using a reviewing method. The analysis captures the main theoretical and empirical background regarding the motives and circumstances of becoming a victim, the dynamics of several social and demographical characteristics of this type of victims, as well as a sample of relevant case studies from some developing countries. The main finding is that, in literature, most of the victims are male people of different ages, employed, married or single, regardless the level of education. For developing countries such as China, India and Nigeria, the majority of victims act out of naivety and desire to escape from poverty, while some victims from Latin America, China and Nigeria are influenced by greed and lack of empathy, without thinking of further consequences for their families and friends involved. Moreover, most of the victims are convinced to invest in financial schemes by family members, friends, or acquaintances.

ABSTRACT

The blending of nanomaterials into a polymeric matrix is a method known for its ability, under certain circumstances, to lead to an improvement in membrane properties. TiO2 nanoparticles have been used in membrane research for the last 20 years and have continuously shown promise in this field of research. Polysulfone (PSf) membranes were obtained through the phase inversion method, with different TiO2 nanoparticle concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1 wt.%) and two types of TiO2 crystalline structure (anatase and rutile), via the addition of commercially available nanopowders. Research showed improvement in all studied properties. In particular, the 0.5 wt.% TiO2 rutile membrane recorded an increase in permeability of 139.7% compared to the control membrane. In terms of overall performance, the best nanocomposite membrane demonstrated a performance index increase of 71.1% compared with the control membrane.

ABSTRACT

The paper presents the morphology, topography and corrosion behavior of epoxy resin/zinc hybrid coatings obtained by electrodeposition from zinc sulphate electrolyte. The effect of current density and mean diameter size of polymer particles used for electrodeposition of the epoxy resin/zinc coatings on the morphology, topography and roughness of the surfaces were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. The corrosion behavior of the hybrid coatings in 0.5 M sodium chloride solution was evaluated using electrochemical methods. For microbiological corrosion, the effect of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) on the surfaces was evaluated using epifluorescence microscopy. The surface roughness before and after bacteria attachment was evaluated using Atomic force microscopy. Polymer particles provide an influence in restricting the growth of zinc crystals as well as a catalytic role in nucleation sites increase. The results of electrochemical tests indicate a very good corrosion resistance of hybrid coatings comparing with zinc coatings. Epifluorescence images demonstrate that hybrid coating surfaces are slightly attacked by sulphate reducing bacteria.

ABSTRACT

This study demonstrates the utilization of a multi-objective hybrid global/local optimization algorithm for solving managed aquifer recharge (MAR) design problems, in which the decision variables included spatial arrangement of water injection and abstraction wells and time-variant rates of pumping and injection. The objective of the optimization was to maximize the efficiency of the MAR scheme, which includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. The case study used to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed approach is based on a published report on designing a real MAR site with defined aquifer properties, chemical groundwater characteristics as well as quality and volumes of injected water. The demonstration problems include steady state and transient scenarios. The steady state scenario demonstrates optimization of spatial arrangement of multiple injection and recovery wells, whereas the transient scenario was developed with the purpose of finding optimal regimes of water injection and recovery at a single location. Both problems were defined as multi-objective problems. The scenarios were simulated by applying coupled numerical groundwater flow and solute transport models: MODFLOW-2005 and MT3D-USGS. The applied optimization method was a combination of global (the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm [NSGA-2]) and local (the Nelder-Mead downhill simplex search algorithms). The analysis of the resulting Pareto optimal solutions led to the discovery of valuable patterns and dependencies between the decision variables, model properties, and problem objectives. Additionally, the performance of the traditional global and the hybrid optimization schemes were compared.

ABSTRACT

Bladder cancer (BC) is one of the most frequent forms of cancer, particularly in Caucasian population. Many environmental factors are recognized as carcinogenic in humans for this form of neoplasia and some of them are related to occupation. In order to illustrate these effects, we have selected several relevant cases with smoking and occupational exposure to carcinogens and their histopathological findings. We reviewed the most important research published in the field of environmental-genomic interaction in relation with the oncogenesis of BC. Three main directions have been identified and described in the article: the environmental factors involved in BC pathogenesis and evolution, the molecular mechanisms involved in cell mitosis control and xenobiotic metabolism related to the qualitative and quantitative exposure and, finally, the possible biomarkers of the tumor evolution. From the genomic and proteomic research, new biomarkers emerged that are in the validation process. Immunohistochemical methods open also new perspectives to the diagnostic algorithms and could serve as prognosis biomarkers.
