ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Research has demonstrated that patients with insomnia are at an increased risk of experiencing suicidal ideation and/or making a suicide attempt. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relation between insomnia and suicidal behaviour. AIMS: To examine factors associated with a diagnosis of insomnia in patients admitted to an Emergency Department (ED) and assessed by the psychiatrist in charge. METHODS: Participants were 843 patients consecutively admitted to the ED of Sant'Andrea Hospital in Rome, between January 2010 and December 2011. All patients admitted were referred to a psychiatrist. A clinical interview based on the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and a semi-structured interview was conducted. Patients were asked about 'ongoing' suicidal ideation or plans for suicide. RESULTS: Forty-eight percent of patients received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD) or an anxiety disorder; whereas, 17.1% were diagnosed with Schizophrenia or other non-affective psychosis. Patients with insomnia (compared to patients without insomnia) more frequently had a diagnosis of BD (23.9% vs. 12.4%) or MDD (13.3% vs. 9.5%; p < 0.001). Moreover, patients with insomnia less frequently had attempted suicide in the past 24 h (5.3% vs. 9.5%; p < 0.05) as compared with other patients, but those patients with insomnia who attempted suicide more frequently used a violent method (64.3% vs. 23.6%; p < 0.01) compared to other suicide attempters. CONCLUSIONS: Our results do not support an association between insomnia and suicidal behaviour. However, suicide attempters with insomnia more frequently used violent methods, and this phenomenon should be taken into serious consideration by clinicians.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Obesity and overweight are relevant public health issues. They are frequently associated with increased disability, enhanced morbidity and mortality and are often comorbid with several psychological/psychiatric conditions. The aim of the present study was to explore gender-related differences concerning anger expression and interpersonal relationships in a sample of overweight/obese subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The convenience sample consisted of 40 overweight/obese subjects (18 women, 22 men) who were administered self-report questionnaires to assess eating disorders (EDI-2), anger levels (STAXI) and self/other perception as a measure of interpersonal relationships (9AP). RESULTS: Women had higher scores on the EDI-2 subscales of Bulimia (7.22 vs. 2.20: z=7.61; p<.001), Body Dissatisfaction (15.56 vs. 12.14: z=1.88; p=.03), Interoceptive Awareness (9.89 vs. 5.28: z=4.06; p<.001), Ineffectiveness (11.00 vs 5.22: z=4.91; p <.001) and Perfectionism (6.33 vs. 3.26: z=4.13; p<.001) compared to norms. The overweight/obese men departed from the norms on fewer subscales. Both women and men tended to turn feelings of anger in toward themselves, suppressing their anger. Also, women obtained lower scores for Self Empathy (29.06 vs. 40.15: z = - 2.30; p = .01) and Other Empathy (16.44 vs. 27.10: z =- 2.00; p= .02) whereas overweight/ obese men obtained lower scores for Other Empathy (20.77 vs. 28.47: z=-2.00; p=.02). CONCLUSIONS: Overweight/obese subjects have a tendency to turn feelings of anger inward on to themselves together with impaired interpersonal relationships, especially in women. An adequate clinical assessment in all obese individuals trying to identify the contribution of psychological factors to the perceived distress is critical.

ABSTRACT

Four linear polyacetylenic compounds were synthesized. Pentadeca-6,8,10-triynoic acid 1 and octadeca-8,10,12-triynoic acid 2 were synthesized by using acetylene coupling reactions. The syntheses of (Z)-hexadec-11-en-7,9-diynoic acid 3 and (Z)-octadec-12-en-7,9-diynoic acid 4 by using vinylic telluride coupling reactions were accomplished.

ABSTRACT

The ability of C8-substituted guanine (Gua) ribonucleosides to induce B cell proliferation has been well documented in the literature. These compounds are analogues of adducts formed from free radical attack on ribonucleosides and RNA. Here we examined the proliferative properties of two of these radical adducts, 8-methylguanosine (8-MeG) and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanosine (8-OxoG) and compared them with those of the well studied B cell mitogen, 8-bromoguanosine (8-BrG). 8-MeG and 8-OxoG were synthesized in the considerable yields of 28, and 55%, respectively, and were characterized by UV, NMR and CG-MS. Their effects upon [3H]thymidine uptake into DNA by Swiss mouse splenocytes, mouse embryo 3T3 fibroblasts (A31) and mouse B16F10 melanoma were examined. Both guanosine (G) radical adducts were shown to increase [3H]thymidine uptake by mouse splenocytes but displayed selectivity in respect to continuous cell lines. 8-MeG acted upon 3T3 fibroblasts whereas 8-OxoG acted upon B16F10 melanoma. The non-physiological analogue 8-BrG acted upon all tested cells. Parallel experiments of cell counting, cytotoxicity, and cell sorting indicated that DNA synthesis induced by the C8-substituted G's reflected cell growth. It is proposed that the compounds act intracellularly because their proliferative effects were blocked in the presence of a nucleoside transport inhibitor but were not inhibited by an antagonist of the A2 purine receptor. The present results, taken together with data from the literature, suggest that in the case of 3T3 fibroblasts and mouse splenocytes the proliferative effects of the compounds are not dependent on metabolism through purine salvage pathways. In the case of melanoma, however, the compounds are likely to become part of the purine nucleoside pool. The demonstration that adducts produced by free radical attack on ribonucleosides and RNA are able to induce cell proliferation opens new perspectives for the understanding of free radical mediated carcinogenesis.

ABSTRACT

The authors treated with paromomycin 25 patients, with AIDS and cryptosporidiosis. The drug was given orally in a doses of 500 mg qid, for a period of 14 days. Tolerance was good, with just two cases of mild side-effects. Clinical improvement was obtained in 19 (76%) patients. Parasitological cure, however, occurred only in a low percentage (25%). In some cases where initial success was observed, recrudescence occurred after some weeks or few months, but with retreatment again clinical improvement was obtained. Even if it does not lead to frequent parasite eradication, the good clinical results and tolerance permit us to consider paromomycin one of the few drugs effective for the treatment of cryptosporidial diarrhea in AIDS patients. Studies with maintainance therapy are indicated.

ABSTRACT

The peroxidase-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of a linear aldehyde, leading to the next lower homologue in the triplet state, is accompanied by Norrish type II product ethylene when the substrate is pentanal. This system appears to provide an example of "photobiochemistry without light" because ethylene is a plant hormone and is formed in lipid peroxidation when the recurrent oxidation of linear aldehydes occurs.
