ABSTRACT

Composites based on powdered single-component epoxy matrix are an alternative technological solution for composites produced using liquid epoxy resins. This article describes in detail the process of producing graphite-reinforced composites for tribological applications. The advantages and disadvantages of technological processes where the matrix is a single-component epoxy powder were demonstrated, and the properties of the obtained materials were examined. A series of composite materials with the graphite filler with sizes below 10 µm and below 45 µm and weight additions of 5, 10, 20, 30% were produced. Mechanical tests and tribological tests conducted with the pin-on-block method were performed, and the mechanism of tribological wear was described. The conducted research allowed us to conclude that the incorporation of graphite, regardless of particle size, above 10% by weight results in a significant reduction in the friction coefficient (approximately 40-50% lower than in unfilled epoxy resin), which is beneficial in the production of cheap self-lubricating materials.

ABSTRACT

In this work, epoxy composites filled with flake graphite of various size (less than 10 µm and less than 45 µm) were produced. The aim of the research was to develop a self-lubricating material with favorable tribological properties, i.e., reduced friction coefficient compared to unfilled epoxy resin and limited abrasive wear. The research material was produced using technical epoxy resins based on bisphenol A. The detailed process of composite production was described, and typical technological problems were considered. The addition of graphite led to an increase in dynamic viscosity, which positively limits the phenomenon of sedimentation, but an increase in the filler content also led to an increase in the porosity of the material. A series of tests have shown that the addition of graphite above 5% by weight allows for a reduction in the friction coefficient from 0.6 to 0.4 and significantly reduces the material's tendency to abrasive wear.

ABSTRACT

Dietary supplements are food products commonly used worldwide to obtain nutritional and physiological effects. They can contain a wide variety of active substances and can be administered for health and disease. Their use can be beneficial if justified, and their quality is adequate. Unfortunately, data on the quality of supplements is scarce. As part of this work, we assess the quality of seven dietary supplements containing proline. The preparations were produced in the EU and the USA. The quality assessment consisted of the detection of potential impurities, the determination of the content of the main ingredient, and the release of proline. The technique used to analyse impurities and proline (Pro) content was liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. We detected five contaminants. The main ingredient content was in the range of 73-121% in capsules and 103-156% in tablets. Five of the seven analysed dietary supplements released below 80% Pro (for each tablet/capsule at pH 1.2). One of the supplements may be inactive because a very low release of Pro was reported. The results, we hope, will increase consumer awareness of the quality of these preparations and result in a change in the regulations governing the marketing of these preparations, at least by making release testing mandatory.

ABSTRACT

The paper is dedicated to the evaluation of the accuracy of rotary parts produced with the use of advanced manufacturing technology. The authors investigated the impact of the layer thickness of the applied material and the orientation of the model when printing using the PolyJet method™ on the geometrical quality of manufactured products. To analyze the influence of the assumed factors on the geometrical quality of the holes, a novel evaluation method has been developed. The proposed method takes into account parameters such as roundness deviation, profile irregularity coefficient, dominant harmonic component of the roundness profile, cylindricity deviation, diameter error, and surface topography parameters. The study presented in this paper had two main objectives. The former was to analyze the impact of the layer thickness of the applied material and the orientation of the model when printing using the PolyJet method™ on the geometrical quality of rotary parts. The latter objective was to test a novel, multi-parametric method of evaluation of the accuracy of produced parts in practice. The results obtained by the authors prove that the new evaluation method can be useful in the assessment of the accuracy of manufactured products.

ABSTRACT

Dietary supplements are widely consumed in the EU and the USA. Based on their similarity to pharmaceuticals, consumers mistakenly believe that dietary supplements have also been approved for safety and efficacy. However, in the absence of mandatory testing, data on supplement quality is scarce. Thus, we applied liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry to analyse the quality of dietary supplements containing tryptophan (Trp). We examined 22 supplements in tablets or capsules, produced in the USA, Great Britain, Germany, France, Czech Republic, and Poland. Trp release, crucial for bioavailability and efficiency, was assessed. Additionally, we performed a qualitative analysis of the main ingredient and screened for contaminants. Among the contaminants, we detected Trp's metabolites, condensation products of Trp and carbonyl compounds, Trp degradation products, degradation products of kynurenine, and other contaminants such as glucosamine and melatonin. The main ingredient content was in the range of 55-100% in capsules and 69-87% in tablets. Surprisingly, almost no Trp release was noted from some supplements. Our study confirms the need to advance research on supplements. We believe that the high-quality analysis of supplements based on reliable analytical techniques will be an important contribution to the discussion on the regulatory framework of these products.

ABSTRACT

At the Kielce University of Technology, a concept of the accurate measurement of sphericity deviations of machine parts has been developed. The concept is based upon the measurement of roundness profiles in many clearly defined cross-sections of the workpiece. Measurements are performed with the use of a typical radius change measuring instrument equipped with a device for accurate positioning of the ball. This paper focuses on the statistical analysis of the differences between measurement results of spherical parts obtained by the new and traditional method. The differences were analyzed by applying preselected statistical parameters and diagrams. Results of the analysis revealed that that the new method may contribute to a much more reliable measurement of form deviations of spherical parts.

ABSTRACT

Various types of analyses performed over multi-omics data are driven today by next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques that produce large volumes of DNA/RNA sequences. Although many tools allow for parallel processing of NGS data in a Big Data distributed environment, they do not facilitate the improvement of the quality of NGS data for a large scale in a simple declarative manner. Meanwhile, large sequencing projects and routine DNA/RNA sequencing associated with molecular profiling of diseases for personalized treatment require both good quality data and appropriate infrastructure for efficient storing and processing of the data. To solve the problems, we adapt the concept of Data Lake for storing and processing big NGS data. We also propose a dedicated library that allows cleaning the DNA/RNA sequences obtained with single-read and paired-end sequencing techniques. To accommodate the growth of NGS data, our solution is largely scalable on the Cloud and may rapidly and flexibly adjust to the amount of data that should be processed. Moreover, to simplify the utilization of the data cleaning methods and implementation of other phases of data analysis workflows, our library extends the declarative U-SQL query language providing a set of capabilities for data extraction, processing, and storing. The results of our experiments prove that the whole solution supports requirements for ample storage and highly parallel, scalable processing that accompanies NGS-based multi-omics data analyses.

ABSTRACT

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are created according to the principles of ad hoc mobile networks (MANETs), i.e., spontaneous creation of a wireless network for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. Each vehicle in this network is treated as a node that is part of the mobile network. VANET turns all cooperating vehicles into a wireless router or node. This makes it possible to connect all cars within range to a stationary unit and create a wide network with a huge range. VANET is widely used for better traffic management, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and road information provision. The VANET network is exposed to identity and information attacks, concealing or delaying data transmission, or information theft. Therefore, there are multiple types of attack, such as Sybil or bogus, that might harm the whole network infrastructure. The consequences of the mentioned two attacks could lead not only to the given infrastructure but could cause hammering people's lives. In this paper, we analyze the ongoing methods for preserving Sybil and bogus attacks in a VANET network together with the authors' methods: the Bogus & Sybil Trust Level & Timestamp (B&STL&T) algorithm and the Bogus & Sybil Enhanced Behavior Processing & Footprint (B&SEBP&F) algorithm. The first algorithm, the Bogus & Sybil Trust Level & Timestamp (B&STL&T) algorithm was improved into the Bogus & Sybil Enhanced Behavior Processing & Footprint (B&SEBP&F), presented in the paper. The proposed methods were tested with multiple scenarios using different variations of bogus and Sybil attack and various attacker-victim node number ratios. During analysis, it was observed that detection of all attackers in the network was reduced by approximately 30% in comparison to previous work and that of other cited authors.

ABSTRACT

Embedded three-dimensional printing (e-3DP) is an emerging method for additive manufacturing where semi-solid materials are extruded within a solidifying liquid matrix. Here, we present the first example of employing e-3DP in the pharmaceutical field and demonstrate the fabrication of bespoke chewable dosage forms with dual drug loading for potential use in pediatrics. LegoTM-like chewable bricks made of edible soft material (gelatin-based matrix) were produced by directly extruding novel printing patterns of model drug ink (embedded phase) into a liquid gelatin-based matrix (embedding phase) at an elevated temperature (70 °C) to then solidify at room temperature. Dose titration of the two model drugs (paracetamol and ibuprofen) was possible by using specially designed printing patterns of the embedded phase to produce varying doses. A linearity [R2 = 0.9804 (paracetamol) and 0.9976 (ibuprofen)] was achieved between percentage of completion of printing patterns and achieved doses using a multi-step method. The impact of embedded phase rheological behavior, the printing speed and the needle size of the embedded phase were examined. Owning to their appearance, modular nature, ease of personalizing dose and geometry, and tailoring and potential inclusion of various materials, this new dosage form concept holds a substantial promise for novel dosage forms in pediatrics.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the three-dimensional (3D) surface micromorphology of zinc/silver particles (Zn/AgPs) composite coatings with antibacterial activity prepared using an electrodeposition technique. These 3D nanostructures were investigated over square areas of 5 µm × 5 µm by atomic force microscopy (AFM), fractal, and wavelet analysis. The fractal analysis of 3D surface roughness revealed that (Zn/AgPs) composite coatings have fractal geometry. Triangulation method, based on the linear interpolation type, applied for AFM data was employed in order to characterise the surfaces topographically (in amplitude, spatial distribution and pattern of surface characteristics). The surface fractal dimension Df , as well as height values distribution have been determined for the 3D nanostructure surfaces.
