ABSTRACT

The term schizotypy refers to the latent personality organization that is thought to underpin the liability to develop schizophrenia and associated disorders. Metacognition, or the ability to understand and form increasingly complex and integrated ideas of oneself, others, and one's community, has been proposed to be an important transdiagnostic construct across schizophrenia spectrum disorders and a range of both clinical and non-clinical manifestations of schizotypy. In this paper, we review evidence that deficits in metacognition are present in individuals with relatively high levels of schizotypy and that these deficits are related to symptomology, function, and quality of life. We address the idea that decrements in metacognition may also contribute to the progression from schizotypy to more severe manifestations, while the amelioration of these deficits may enhance aspects of recovery, including the ability to form an integrated sense of self, others, and the wider world. We also review the following two recovery-oriented psychotherapies that target metacognition to promote recovery in individuals with clinical manifestations of schizotypy: Evolutionary Systems Therapy for Schizotypy (ESTS) and Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT).

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The combination of the high prevalence of problematic substance use and substance use disorders (SUD) with the low rates of spontaneous remission continues to generate interest in the development of novel and efficacious interventions. Theoretically, episodic future thinking (EFT) is capable of targeting various underlying psychological and neurobiological substrates of SUD by traversing various research domain criteria systems. METHOD: The systematic review examines EFT as a potentially efficacious intervention for problematic substance use and SUD. The review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We examined 46 full-text studies (from 1,238 total records obtained from APA PsycInfo and Pubmed databases and reference list search), which yielded a final sample of 16 studies. RESULTS: The studies showed heterogeneity in their risk of bias, EFT protocols, and control conditions. Overall, EFT showed benefits in reducing self-reported or task-based substance use-related outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Future research directions include establishing the feasibility of EFT, examining the generalizability in decreasing real-world substance use, identifying mediators and moderators of EFT outcomes, and determining the sustainability of EFT effects over time. ABSTRACT

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak forced an emergency transition to online classes across the world with little warning or instruction for faculty and students. The goal of this research was to document how this response impacted undergraduate students studying the principles of evolution in an introductory organismal biology class over time; specifically, how their study habits for exams differed (a) one week and (b) one month after a university's decision to transition to emergency remote instruction. We asked students about the extent to which COVID-19 impacted their study habits, and we categorized students' responses using open coding. We identified a number of consistent similarities-as well as dramatic differences-in their responses as the time away from campus increased. The report that follows is a summary of the documented barriers and recommendations based on literature concerning crises and equitable practices.
