ABSTRACT

57 patients with viral condylomata of the uterine cervix and/or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) were examined evaluating the presence of Chlamydia Trachomatis (Ct) cervical infection and serum IgG anti-Ct. The prevalence of Ct cervical infection was globally 7.22%, in CIN 3 group the rate was higher (16.67%). In addition, in this group the rate of IgG anti-Ct was significantly higher (66.67% vs 11.76%; p = 0.01) in comparison to the whole group. The role of the association between Human Papillomaviruses and Ct infection was finally discussed.

ABSTRACT

We documented a new case of 46,XY true hermaphroditism in an 18-year-old patient, reared as a female at birth, with ambiguous genitalia and primary amenorrhea. At laparotomy, bilateral dysgenetic ovotestis containing gonadoblastoma were found. Karyotypes of peripheral lymphocytes and cells from tissue of both gonads were all 46,XY. Plastic surgery was conducted to transform ambiguous genitalia to the full female phenotype. Clitoreduction by glans resection and fastening of the corpora cavernosa in the labia major with enlargement of the vaginal orifice were performed. The results was a small eretcile organ with preserved sensitivity and a female capable of normal sexual activity.

ABSTRACT

In the present work, carried out by means of phenotypic and genotypic tests, it has been demonstrated that none of the vaginal lactobacilli isolated from asymptomatic women were genetically close to L. acidophilus ATCC 4356. Strains of homofermentative lactobacilli were identified as Lactobacillus gasseri, L. jensenii and L. crispatus, while in the heterofermentative only one strain was classified as L. fermentum. Moreover a genetically homologous group of heterofermentative lactobacilli, that could represent a new species, were evidenced.

ABSTRACT

The records of 194 consecutive pairs of twins were reviewed. Univariate and multivariate analyses of relative risks (RR) of perinatal death were performed. Perinatal mortality rate was higher in small-for-gestational-age twins and in fetuses with discordancy in size at birth more than 20% and 25%. The RR of perinatal death for small-for-gestational-age twins was 4.8 (2.74-8.42 95% CI). For intertwin birth-weight percent differences of 20% and 25%, the RR was 5.48 (3.2-9.38 95% CI) and 7.2 (3.87-13.42 95% CI). Population mortality attributable risk in the two populations (10.36% and 14.5%, respectively) demonstrates the importance of the prenatal assessment of the respective size of twins in preventing perinatal death.

ABSTRACT

The authors examined 160 non-selected patients between the 28th and 40th weeks of gestational age with mycotic vaginitis. The chemosusceptibility of the isolated yeast to the main antimycotic drugs was evaluated through the Kirby-Bauer method as well as the determination of MIC. The antimycotic drugs tested were Nystatin, Miconazole, Ketoconazole, Clotrimazole, Amphotericin B, Econazole and 5-Fluorocytosine. The obtained data indicate a lacking effectiveness of Clotrimazole in contrast with the high percentage of therapeutical success reported in the literature. Better results were found with Econazole and the other antimycotic drugs tested. Nystatin is the most effective drug "in vitro". The authors furthermore highlight the utility of MIC determination, above all in the cases of recurrent vaginitis and when systemic therapy is undertaken.

ABSTRACT

Neonatal prognostic significance of some biometric parameters in a population study of 331 low-birth-weight newborns was investigated. Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrates that length, head size and weight are the best predictors of neonatal outcome in small for gestational age (SGA) newborns. In the population of SGA newborns biometric parameters more affected by growth failure were thoracic circumference, weight, head circumference and length, in that order. It seems that the best parameters for the sonographic diagnosis of growth failure are the poorest predictors of neonatal outcome. The possible role of ponderal index as an expression of fetal and neonatal well-being is discussed.
