ABSTRACT

The authors report an atypical late onset of a big axillary lymphatic malformation in a 41-year-old male. Considering the patient's history and clinical findings at first presentation, the swelling was highly suspicious for malignancy or cystic echinococcosis. A consequent CT showed non infiltrative growth with inhomogeneous density but remained non conclusive regarding diagnosis. Subsequently incision biopsy revealed lymphatic tissue and raised suspicion for lymphatic malformation. The tumour was excised completely and showed no recurrence in a 1-year follow up. Late onset lymphatic malformations can mimic malignant tumours or other rare conditions such as echinococcosis which has to be taken into consideration as differential diagnosis especially in known areas of hydatid diseases.

ABSTRACT

The aim of our study was to evaluate if the amount of resected breast tissue has an influence on breast sensitivity after inferior pedicle mammaplasty. In the prospective study, 15 patients (30 breasts) were divided into two groups: group I (less than 400 g resection) and group II (more than 400 g resection). Preoperatively and six months postoperatively a touch test (Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments) and temperature (warm and cold) tests were performed. The study showed that all patients had increased touch sensitivity six months after inferior pedicle mammaplasty regardless of the amount of resection. In group I an average of 65% and in group II an average of 83% retained sensitivity for temperature postoperatively. These results suggests that this mammaplasty technique preserves intercostal nerves within the inferior pedicle and reliefs chronic nerve traction injury and improves thereby breast sensibility.

ABSTRACT

In the rat, free skin grafts exchanged between genetically different clones were completely rejected after three weeks. These transplants were not rejected when island autografts were set into preformed holes in the allografts. A typical graft-rejection pattern in the mixed skin transplants showed initial healing of the alloepidermis, which was later replaced by outgrowing autoepidermis from the interspersed islands. Since the autoepidermis covers the allocorium directly, it appears much like normal skin. In a few cases, connective tissue formed between the new autoepidermis and the remaining allodermis. Fibrous tissue streaks were also found between the otherwise unchanged allodermis layer and the muscle fascia. The remaining allocorium could still be found 111 days after transplantation using cytogenetic techniques and chromosome analysis. Mixed skin grafts consist of cell mosaics including cell lines form the donor and the recipient, with the corium structures completely retained. Cellular and humoral infiltration was not found to be part of the rejection process.
