ABSTRACT

The paper is focused on a verification of the moisture content of fiberboard insulations in the multilayer loadbearing log wall designed with and without the vapor barrier. Experimental verification was done using a sample of the multilayer loadbearing log wall built in a research timber structure building under in-situ conditions. Indoor properties of the building met conditions for human occupancy. The experiment was performed for 2 years and 3 months. Aims of the fiberboard insulations moisture content verification in the walls were to verify the effect of vapor barrier in various periods of the year and verify excessive moisture in the fiberboard insulations, which is undesirable in terms of biodegradation. The results of measuring the moisture content showed that after a certain period, the difference of insulation moisture content in the wall including and excluding vapor barrier is negligible, as well as other results and conclusions for designing the composition of multilayer loadbearing log walls.

ABSTRACT

This study focused on the responses of soil microorganisms to different management regimes on disturbed windthrow areas. Microbial parameters potentially serving as indicators of environmental changes within a long-term monitoring of forest development after large-scale disturbance events were assessed. Basal and substrate-induced respiration, N mineralisation, catalase activity, microbial biomass as well as functional diversity based on Biolog assay were determined in soil samples from three disturbed plots and an undisturbed reference plot in the Tatra National Park (Slovakia) since 2006. A relative congruence of inter-annual trends of microbial activity indicators at all plots results from a common response of microbiota to changes of climate at the landscape level after forest stands were destroyed. While catalase activity and functional diversity proved to be useful indicators of temporal trends, microbial biomass seems to reflect different management regimes at the disturbed plots.

ABSTRACT

Four-year-old seedlings of Picea abies [L.] Karst (Norway spruce) were grown in semi-controlled conditions with three watering regimes. The seedlings in the control group (c) were watered to prevent any dehydration effect. The two remaining groups were subjected to mild (ms) and severe water stress (ss), respectively. The following physiological variables were monitored until ss seedlings began to die: leaf water potential (psi(L)), stomatal conductance (g(s)), CO(2) exchange (P(N)), free proline content (Pro), total chlorophyll (a + b) concentration (Chl(t)) and the maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (F(v)/F(m)). The results indicate that not all observed physiological parameters display the same degree of sensitivity to dehydration. After Day 12 of dehydration, psi(L) of ss seedlings was already significantly lower than that of the two other groups. On Day 26, significant differences in psi(L) were recorded among all treatments. Decreasing values of water potential were accompanied by early changes in P(N), g(s) and Pro. A significant decrease in Chl(t) and F(v)/F(m) were only observed during the more advanced stages of dehydration. These results demonstrate that the drought response of P. abies seedlings include a number of parallel physiological and biochemical changes in concert, enhancing the capability of plants to survive and grow during drought periods, but only to a point.
