ABSTRACT

The patient satisfaction score is an important index of quality improvement in health care organizations. The satisfaction score may reflect the quality of patient care and patients' safety and loyalty. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in mean patient satisfaction scores before and after diagnosis-specific discharge instructions were implemented in three outpatient units (Ambulatory Surgery, Endoscopy, Main Surgery) at an urban acute care hospital. Patients (N = 1171) were contacted by a survey company the first week after surgery. Satisfaction summary reports were obtained from the hospital nursing administration. Results of this preliminary study indicate that diagnosis-specific discharge instructions have positive effects on patient satisfaction scores.

ABSTRACT

Newly graduated nurses' role conception and role discrepancy changes that occurred during a 6-week newly graduated nurse hospital orientation program were explored. Newly graduated nurses' perceptions of ideal and actual nursing behaviors within three nursing role conceptions (professional, service, and bureaucratic) were identified. The difference between ideal and actual role conception scores was calculated (role discrepancy). Findings suggested that a comprehensive, structured hospital orientation program for newly graduated nurses eased the transition from nursing student to practicing nurse by decreasing role discrepancy.

ABSTRACT

Supervisor support is one factor contributing to a healthy work environment for registered nurses (RNs). This study explored differences in RNs' perceptions of their work environment by both years in the profession and current position. A statistically significant difference was found for RNs' perceptions of Supervisor Support based on number of years in current position. Those RNs with less than 2 years in their current position perceived the greatest Supervisor Support (X = 6.96; P = .03).

ABSTRACT

Early identification of students at risk of failing the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses allows nurse educators and students the opportunity to develop a remediation plan. The author describes one program's systematic review and exploration of the predictive ability of standardized examinations, nursing course theory grades, and entrance criteria for identifying students at risk. Best predictors at 3 points in the curriculum (entrance, midway, and the semester before graduation) are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Anticoagulation therapy is a life-enhancing therapy for patients who are at risk for embolic events secondary to atrial fibrillation, valve replacement, and other comorbidities. Clinicians are motivated to decrease the amount of time that patients are either under- or over-anticoagulated, common conditions that decrease patient safety at either extreme. The primary purpose of this descriptive study was to examine the relationship between personal life event factors as measured by Norbeck's Life Events Questionnaire, core demographics such as age and income, and anticoagulation regulation. Although many factors affect anticoagulation therapy, the precise impact of life events, positive or negative, is unknown. The salient findings of this study (n = 202) showed a small, though statistically significant, inverse relationship (r = -0.184, P < .01) between negative life events and decreased time within therapeutic international normalized ratio. Total Life Event scores showed a statistically significant inverse relationship (r = -0.159, P < .05) to international normalized ratio time within therapeutic level. Lower income was inversely associated with higher negative Life Event scores (r = -0.192, P < .01). The findings demonstrate the need for strategies that address the potential impact of life events in conjunction with coexisting screening measures used in anticoagulation clinics. Implications for this study are limited by lack of methodology documenting concurrent social support factors and limitations of the research tool to reflect life event issues specific to outpatient seniors.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationship among ethnicity and perceptions of the work environment among staff nurses in a large urban hospital in Northern California. Moos' Work Environment Scale, System Maintenance and Change Dimensions, was used to investigate staff nurse perception of the work environment related to role clarity, managerial control, and innovation. Findings of this study suggest statistically significant differences in the way Caucasian and non-Caucasian nurses viewed the extent to which management used rules and pressures. The perception of control in the work environment is an important factor in retention and in maintaining a quality workplace.
